heh, sorry about the title. Still true? No?
/*Disclaimer, this is based on my option. Most of it is subjective. I understand that people love thier xboxes/ps2s and gaming is ment to be fun. Even my atari 2600 gives me love.*/
First, about gaming in general…. I feel the other forums here on AVS could care less about gaming. Many of them are the "older baby boomer types" that say, why do you want to play *VIDEO GAMES*? "That's a waste of time, aren't you older than 12 now?" "GROW UP!" Even to this day, in 2005, gaming is still very misunderstood by these types of people; this bias is even in the media. Oh, they tend to forget that gaming is only a 12 billion dollar industry that makes more money than hollywood.
Ok, now I got that out of me.... I'm a big fan of pc gaming and I’m currently in research mode about buying a DLP/RP LCD for this purpose. I’m a noob with gaming on big tvs, but have knowledge with PC gaming and the effects of video display on computers. I love gaming soo much that I started a game center/cyber cafe with 18 pcs, 4 networked xboxes. It's still going strong and growing, but no money in it so far. Not quitting the day job yet.
I've looked through AVS forum about the issues associated to gaming, but most of the information is based off of consoles, not PCs. Most people think xbox is this godly instrument of pleasure, but IMO, it’s like a sprinter with stubby legs.
One main problem that I see is, the action on a FPS PC game is about 2x – 3x faster than any halo game. Yes, my measurements are not scientific, but I have been involved with major halo tournaments thru the years and have seen the 6th ranked player in the U.S. many times. Still looks like slow motion when compared to PC gaming.
Deep down, I wish people would see the light about PC gaming. I’d think all of you guys would faint if you played Battlefield 2 on a big screen online (coming in March)! That will be pure, unadulterated pleasure for me personally.
Xbox/PS2 good? Sure, for 99% of the population. But if your like me, I don't like my gaming to be "stuck on rails" and be forced to look at ancient graphics. Also, I've found many people complain about the size of the screens and that its difficult to play games on them. I disagree, its better that way!

I feel much better now. Thanks. Anyways, enough of that, here are a few questions about PC gaming on big screens.....
1. What type of cabling is best for long distance PC gaming (like 30-40 feet of cabling)? I would like to run a cable from the office to the living room. Dvi or svideo or a plain CRT cable? I personally see a big difference b/w DVI and normal CRT on my Dell lcd monitor. Is DVI better on a DLP/RPLCD?
2. How much video signal/speed degradation is there if I run cable from the office to the tv room, like 30-40 feet? If I get a “fast†tv, like the Toshiba, will length of cable that effect the response time? Is it wise to have cabling that long?
3. Is the “video lag†similar to the response rate on a computer lcd monitor? I read that it’s due to the conversion of the different video formats from the gaming source to the tv. But then again, there is no definitive answer here. For example, I have an 18in dell, with a 30ms response rate and it took me about a day to get use to it. I don't notice it now. Would this be the same thing? I read about figures with DLP/LCD in the 300ms or 1/3 sec delay range!!! Anyone know the actually figures for the “response rates†in these DLPs/RPLCDs? I don’t see anything in these TV specs.
4. Is the “motion blur†on these big tvs like on some of the cheaper computer lcd monitors? For example, with a FPS game, would I notice the blurring effect when moving quickly? Btw, DLP/RPLCD is pretty much the same LCD technology but just projected off a mirror on to a big screen, right? So, I’d assume these TVs would have the similar issues with gaming on a normal LCD screen…..
5. I thought these DLPs and RP LCD tvs have a refresh rate problems (i.e. flicker), is this true? For example, my Dell LCD monitor has no refresh rate issues because of the LCD pixels have “image memoryâ€, thus not requiring a high rate from the video card. On a CRT monitor, I definitely see “flicker†with a 60 fps rate vs a 75-85 rate in normal pc gaming. How is it on a DLP/LCD?
Thanks for listening!
