Tivo2Go - How does it compare?

I was reading on a professional blog (http://edbrill.com/ebrill/edbrill.nsf?Open) this morning about Tivo2Go. Never having owned a Tivo, I wonder how this compares with what we can do with a ReplayTV and DVArchive?

From the article, it appears that the file sizes are similar but it looks like they've done some tweaking with the codec so WMP can play the files.

Another question I have is in the comments. The first comment claims he can download 2 gigs in 10-15 minutes! Can that be right? Is that type of throughput at all possible with a ReplayTV? I usually put my 5504 in standby for better throughput but it still takes ~40-45 minutes for a 1 hour show @ medium quality.

I don't know where you saw the 2 gigs in 10-15 minutes. It's more like a gig an hour. That's one of the many complaints about TTG, it's slow transferring files. Some contend it's the DRM that slows it down, but whatever it is, it's not nearly as fast as a Replay can tranfer files.

The DRM is another problem. The files are unique to the machine, and can be traced back to that machine. They also require a password each time the file is played, and only work with WMP10. Like most forms of encryption, it can be cracked. You don't have to deal with any of this with Replay files.

A third problem is the only supported authoring software is Sonic's, which sucks. Unless you 'clean' these files of the DRM, your stuck with this, and have to shell out $50 for the 'privilege.

Finally, assuming you have endured the slow transfers and cracked the DRM, you're still stuck with a file that is NOT DVD compliant. This means each file has to be transcoded, a long and quality reducing process. The Replay's medium quality files are compliant, and require *no* transcoding of the video if you use the right software.

And forget about anything even close to DVArchive for Tivo. It's just not possible for a myriad of reasons, one being the Tivos sub-par networking that doesn't support true streaming of video.

*you must be on a wireless network, because I can download a 1 hour med. show in about 20 minutes on a wired network.

Nope, I'm wired. I think the server I run from the house tends to suck my bandwidth pretty bad. I'll have to double-check those figures, though. I usually set up the transfer then go to bed.
