I agree there is probably something there. Actually, I think even within the 8300HD series there were many revs of the hardware, and possibly some of them worked better with drives than others.

Drive/Case - if it works, it is independent of software
Navigator MDN/ODN - MDN is stable, but ODN keeps breaking support. I think this is really where we see the 8300HD/8300HDC issue. I have not seen HD/HDC differences on SARA/Passport (not saying there aren't, I am just not aware of any)
Passport - FFWD/Rewind 'trick play' always breaks
Bad box - some boxes just don't work - this could be related to the version but we don't have this data
I would add a box version field (for HD/HDC AND the exact hardware revision on the bottom of the box) - however at this point the rate of new entries is very low, and I am not sure it is worth it (the code is quite nasty).
