Shonda's article on why Mark was really good and convinced me it was the right choice. The actor was leaving the show and there was no suitable way to explain why he would leave his daughter and how he'd just roam the earth mourning for Lexie. So a death was fitting.
There are two deaths in Shondaverse that I am adamantly against though. And interestingly, they could have left under happy conditions, perfectly in line with their character. The first is George. Why couldn't he have just been left to go to the military and be done with it? The second is on Privates Practice. The midwife guy...can't remember his name. He got in to med school but was killed by a drunk driver, leaving his daughter an orphan (after his estranged wife died in a fiery meth lab explosion she caused). Again, just fine if he moved away to med school. The death of a major character this season was shocking, but foreshadowed. A shame budget cuts got the better of them. Looks to be a solid last season for PP though.
I tell you what, though, Sandra Oh deserves an Emmy nod. She knows how to wrench your heart with just a look. It takes a great actor to express that much without dialogue. She's fantastic. Not sure how many more seasons this show has. Supposedly it's taking a cheerier turn. I mean, the disasters these people have been through IS getting a bit ridiculous... But they've all been done well. Enjoyed this show week after week. Aside from the Denny ghost story arc, it has always delivered,
