Dallas, TX - HDTV - Page 232

I stand corrected. I suppose if someone is concerned that Almavision is being rebroadcast without permission, they should just notify Dish and/or Almavision and let them investigate.

Re: "Movies!" So far what I've seen looks like 16:9 squeezed to 4:3. An issue with a DTV converter box and standard TV I have. No setting will expand it horizontally to crop the sides and make it look right.

Here's something from the My 27 site:

Movies! launches this Monday on digital channel 27.2

Posted: Updated:

Fox Television Stations and Weigel Broadcasting are partnering on Movies!, a film-themed subchannel launching in 17 Fox-owned markets this spring.

The network's aim is "to create a new destination for movie fans that is fan-friendly and available for free via over-the-air television, and in many cases via local cable carriage," said Fox in a statement.

Movies! will be available on Fox subchannels in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston, Washington, Atlanta, Houston, Detroit, Phoenix, Tampa, Minneapolis, Orlando, Austin, Memphis and Ocala.

The films will air 24 hours a day and will appear in a 16 by 9 format. In Dallas-Fort Worth, Movies! will be seen in digital channel 27.2. Bounce TV moves to 27.3.

You will need to rescan your TV to pick up the channels.

I think they can turn on a 16:9 wide screen flag for wide screen SD, so the problem would go away with converter boxes, and HD TVs would automatically switch. Having that enabled from the source allows aspect ratio changes with the converter boxes (Zenith). When not flagged it locks out any options. We shall see!

I did not need to re-scan to pick up Movies! on 27.2 --- The Movies! channel was already airing on Bounce's slot in 27.2, but there was no 27.3

I first did a "Channel-Add" scan, but that did not get the job done.

So, to get the channel labeled properly, and Bounce on 27.3, I did need to do a re-scan.
On my DTVPal DVRs, they automatically added 27.3. (The DTVPals rescan overnight whether wanted or not, no option.) Likewise I did nothing to my Sony HDTV and two Zenith converter boxes on older CRT TVs.
The EPG I get for both 27-2 and 27-3 is for Bounce.rolleyes.gif
post #6939 of 7246
Same here with the EPG. They still have a few issues to address. A while ago they were showing an old movie originally in 4:3 so with the squeezed image the TV displayed black bars on the sides and a picture narrower than high.
Agree with Ed: they need to change the aspect ratio flag to 16:9, since that's how their programming is formatted. Other subchannels are set this way (e.g., 8.2, 8.3).

As many of you have discovered, you don't necessarily need to rescan. Many boxes will find 27.3 automatically. But you may need to rescan for some boxes, or to resolve minor issues (like changing the 27.2 label from Bounce to Movies!)

Yep pretty annoying trying to watch on my little Sony TV, and no way to set the aspect from the converter box with it locked to 4:3 mode...

Looks like KXAS 5 has cut back the amount of PSIP guide data they are sending. 24 hrs at best now, was up to 5 days out.
Looks like the EPG on 27-2 is fixed.smile.gif

Do KERA and KDAF still go out 3 days?

KXAS has been spotty in the past. They may have let the guide go over the long weekend and it dwindled down to what you're seeing. I've seen that happen before. Hopefully someone will get it caught up later today.

KERA 2 1/2 days, KDAF 1 1/2 days.

Looks like KDFI changed something with the aspect ratio but still not right. Some things like commercials only fill a small window on my HDTV in standard mode. And as far as Movies! in wide screen, the one they're showing right now Rio Conchos started wide with the "Cinemascope" logo at the beginning, then went to pan-and-scan 4:3.
I checked yesterday evening and KXAS's EPG was back up to 5 days. The guide went out to 4PM on Sunday.
Interesting. Just checking, KXAS via my DTVPal DVR's EPG ends at 11 AM Friday 5-31, two days.

EDIT: Manually stepping through the guide with the Browse key brought up more info for KXAS until 4 PM Saturday. One of those things!

Looks like KERA will be moving to a new tower & transmitting antenna soon: http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/prefill_and_display.pl?Application_id=1555328&Service=DT&Form_id=340&Facility_id=49324. Due to technical constraints, a few rural viewers will see some changes.

Most viewers will see little change. A few folks south of the metroplex will lose KERA, but many of them have KNCT to turn to. (A small number will be out of range of both.)

On the plus side, if this is approved some viewers east and west of the metroplex will see their KERA reception improve. It appears more folks will gain KERA than will lose it.

KERA is requesting a waiver of the FCC's current freeze on full-power stations expanding their service contour, due to circumstances beyond their control (their current tower is being dismantled by the landowner, and the new tower, shared by many other TV and FM stations, has insufficient room for an omnidirectional RF 14 antenna).

Wonder what organization owns the tower holding the current KERA antenna?

It's same tower that KTVT has Channel 11 antenna mounted. And seems, KERA is now moving to the tower that has KTVT Channel 29 antenna, among many others.

Seems like it might be good to keep the tower and channel 11 antenna in place for the upcoming spectrum crunch (re-pack).

If the FCC auction goes as planned, surely someone will be needing a channel 11 antenna, tower, transmission lines, etc.

It's one of the Richland sites in Cedar Hill:

http://www.richlandtowers.com/OpenHouse/OpenHouseDisplay.asp?p1=1099&p9=I&Cat=119

It's just south of Cedar Hill High school with housing developments nearby. I'd guess that that land is worth more than a tower facility.

Actually KTVT is on RF channel 19, but their sister station KTXA is indeed on RF 29.

I'm not an expert in these matters, but I would think only the tower will be dismantled. The antennas should be returned to their respective owners, right? So KTVT will be getting their old channel 11 antenna back, and they can decide whether to store it for possible later use or discard it.

If they do keep it and decide to let their channel 19 slot be auctioned off, I think it can be mounted on any available tower if there's enough room at the desired height.

BTW, it seems to me that in DFW, RF 10 and RF 13 would be more desirable slots than RF 11. Reason being, the interfering stations would be to the south, so stations could still cover DFW from Cedar Hill without causing interference by using directional antennas, as KFWD does now on RF 9.

Of course if the FCC takes away too much of the UHF spectrum, all three may be needed - not to mention the VHF-Lo band tongue.gif I'm sure folks who bought antennas designed for channels 7-51+ will just be thrilled to discard them and go back to the older, bigger, uglier all-band antenna designs.

From now on I'll bring up this possibility when recommending an antenna. Performance up around channel 50 will no longer be as important as the ability to receive channels 2-6.

Well, I am very disappointed in the 27-2 Movies. I am hearing impaired and depend on closed captioning to understand what is going on. Only 1 of the movies I was interested in this past week had closed captioning. Reluctantly, I have removed 27-2 from my channel viewing list.frown.gif
post #6954 of 7246
You should probably contact KDFI (there's a contact form on their website at http://www.watchmy27.com/category/241183/about-us) to let them know why you're not watching. (I'd suggest contacting Movies! also, but their name is so generic it apparently can't be Googled rolleyes.gif ) There are probably thousands who would benefit from closed captions, but who won't bother to call or write, and closed-captioning should be easy for Movies! to fix.

Edit: Just found it: http://moviestvnetwork.com

Is anybody else having trouble receiving 27-1 / -2 / -3?

They were rock solid until a couple of weeks ago. Now they seem to be off the air. I've no issues receiving any other stations, and nothing has changed on my end. I'm in East Dallas, a couple miles north of downtown.

Thanks.

No, no problems with KDFI or subs in Grand Prairie. Strong afaik for the past few weeks...

It's fine here in Frisco and you can see if there are any mishaps with KDFI over a period of time by looking here:

In contrast, a station with intermittent reception problems is here:

The web site http://kb8u.ham-radio-op.net/tvdx/one_tuner_map/101A67C8/tuner0 for checking TV stations received in Frisco (or any others) hasn't been working for me for a few days. Is there a problem with it?

EDIT: This url to the same page works fine. http://www.rabbitears.info/tvdx/one_tuner_map/101A67C8/tuner0
