For the record, I think toothy's analysis works too - and is completely compatible with mine.

I didn't check the podcast (if it exists) for this episode, but that would be the place to go for any official explaination.

Toothy's explanation made sense, and worked for me as well.

However, the idea of a flashback during freefall (especially a flashback related to Zak's death in a Viper, and Kara's corresponding guilt) struck me as "right" as soon as I read the posts.

I liked the flashback story in addition to my suggestion. In any event, it was an interesting effect that speaks well of the care with which the show is crafted.

Was curious - has anyone with an HD version of the miniseries (damn Comcast again for not having UHD) paused to see what the call sign is of the original CAG before he gets to watch his squadron blown up? It's painted on the viper but illegible in SD...

I enjoyed the show very much, but I'm just curious if anyone can confirm what I think I know, that it would be impossible to navigate from the orbit of that planet to the Galactica without complex instruments, yes?
The...cylons...are...alive? Did I miss something in an earlier episode, or is it shocking that the pilots are apparently living creatures?
Someone else probably has a much better answer for this, but since they are able to replicate human beings, why not the ability to create living ships?

Actually, less realistic seemed to be Starbuck's plugging of the hole in the cylon's ship with something. It was almost like she stuck a cork in it. I am no expert, but I'm guessing that wouldn't work.

The Cylons have managed to genetically engineer living beings based on the human DNA model. That's what the "human" Cylons are. And they've created some sort of organic creature that "pilots" the mechanical ship itself. There are indications the human Cylons think of the organic/mechanical Raider ships as a kind of "pet" - watch Boomer's reaction to the one Starbuck captured.

Not for Starbuck!

Not only that, but she was running out of air when she climbed in to the ship and needed that 'tube' to breathe again. That said, how the heck was she able to write star buck under the wings?

Using the "pilot's" blood, of course. C'mon now, let's have a little imagination here!
Well that I could see, because there was a period where she was pulling the "brain" out of the ship and stuff. And she used the same yellow tape she used to make a splint. But I wish they would have at least had her taping some kind of PDA to "dashboard" hehe. I think leaving the orbit of a moon and finding a distant object would be like finding a microbe in a haystack. Oh well, in the words of the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 theme song, "Repeat to yourself 'It's just a show, I should really just relax!'".
First off, the Galactica was pretty close to the moon to allow for the Vipers and tankers to be in the atmosphere.

Second, the fleet would be a rather large target if she were to have flown around the moon until she saw something.

Third, "It's just a show."

Still, I wish kqc6ea or one of our space experts would chime in on that likelihood of that.
I imagine when space travel gets to the point they are at they might do it the old fashion way, possibly taking note of star positions as a general map of where to go. It's probably a requirement to get a license to fly one of those things in case of instrument failure.

Why not? All it's got to hold is 6-7 psi...

There's only 14.7 psi difference between atmospheric pressure on Earth and the vacuum of space (The Apollo spacecraft and Luner Modules ran at 6 psi). Atmospheric pressure on that moon Starbuck was on couldn't have been half of Earth's pressure.

Wait a minute, why worry about how a jacket or rag sealed the hole in the ship? Let's remark on flying with your feet on some alien tendons and your hands grabbing some main arteries to adjust pitch and yaw. Yee-haw.

Still a fun episode, but what the hell is going on with Helo?
It's true, you don't need to hold much pressure. Recall how thin the walls of the Lunar Module were.

None of the space travel of these shows holds up well to critical analysis. When you start treating the distances involved and energy required realistically, it gets hard to tell a story in a one-hour timeframe. Remember it took seven years for Cassini to reach Saturn, with four gravitational assists.

It would have been way easier to find Starbuck by orbiting the moon. The downed Cylon raider would have a massive heat bloom on that cold surface easily visible through the clouds in infrared.

So we'll just relax and enjoy the characters and story.

What!?!?

You're saying it's just a TV show???

Blasphemy!

I finally watched Sunday's episode tonight. Thought it was the best episode yet.
Crap. My Tivo (and several others, according to a thread at Tivo Community) did not record the episode tonight (5/22).

What a pisser.

Yep, mine would have missed it too, but I caught it in time. FWIW, my tivo didn't list the 5/22 episode in the "Upcoming episode" list, but next week's is listed.

Mine wouldn't have either.

Was there an episode last Sunday? It didn't seem like I missed anything, but I was expecting to watch last week's episode yesterday and Tivo had nothing. That's when I checked and it wasn't planning on recording last night's episode either.
I am pretty bummed that the HD Tivo missed this last episode.
My 8300 caught it. I haven't watched it yet though. I thought this was a strong suit of Tivo.

Last week my 8300 missed the Sunday showing of Deadwood. Thank G for Tuesdays.

(5/15?) Yep ... but I only recently set up a season pass. I don't remember if the SP picked it up last week or if I just did a one-time recording.
I saw last night's episode and I saw the Starbuck returning in the Cylon ship Episode. There was one in between? I was pretty sure I didn't catch a 5/15 episode, but it also didn't seem like I was missing anything when I watched last night

Sounds like a repeat, repeat - (jumping back two episodes.) I haven't looked at last night's (5/22) episode yet ... I'll get back to ya ....

Edit: CP, I'm not sure what's going on, but it sounds like you are at least 2 weeks behind. Both the 5/15 and 5/22 recordings on my box are in the correct sequence and both come after the episode were Starbuck "captures" the Cylon raider.

What was last night's episode? I just finished watching them all and can confirm if you missed anything.

May 8---You Can't Go Home Again

When Kara goes missing under enemy fire, Lee and his father stir up resentment by using too many of the Galactica's scanty resources in their attempts to find her.

May 15--Litmus

When an attack by some of the new humanoid Cylons reveals their existence, a tribunal is convened to determine if any more of them are hiding among the crew of the Galactica.

May 22--Six Degrees of Seperation

Left blank in case you haven't seen it yet.
