DISH Network adding 10 VOOM HD Channels (#'s 9470-9482) May 1, 2005 - Page 2

While Im gonna miss voom, of the choices E* made, only one is of interest to me MonsterHD. Ive heard enough stories about E* that I sure wont commit to a yr contract for 1 channel. I'll just keep fingers crossed cable feels pushed to get some voom channels as well. As things stand I think i'll just sit tight with Comcast for a few months and see how things on D* shape up with its Mpeg4 shift and whether comcast gets more HD. At least with comcast no need to buy equipment now & I can wait till a cpl new mpeg4 capable DVR's are out for D* if want to go back.

I sure would like to know what satellite Dish will have these new channels. If they are on 61.5 and 148 I hope they provide free Dishes for those who either have the HD pak already or are wanting to be a new sub.

Doubt it. Dish doesn't give free dish 300 systems to subscribers wanting to get CBS-HD E/W which are on 61.5/148... Then again, you never know.

Are these part of the HD pack or a new subscription option?
Wow! This is great news!

VOOM's shutdown could be the greatest thing that ever happened to HD!

;)

This is great news!!! Now those of use with E* receivers with 169 mod can now archive the VOOm stuff in true HD.

Yeah I would be suprised if this will be "part" of the HD pack.... since it has more channels than the HD pack.

Count me in as someone who wants to know more hardware details. My E* installation is on the 1st and I want to make sure I'm future proofed.

This is the funniest (ironic) thing to happen in years.

VOOM shuts down, benefitting the HD cause by doubling, tripling, 10x'ing their viewership. TFF.

Depends how much you want to read into the press release. :D For example, it doesn't list a seperate programming price or package for the new channels. Also when it talks about the new customer sign-up, it says you get 6 months of free HD programming, without excluding the Voom channels. I just hope they aren't going to drag all their channels into compression hell.

I'm happy for those Dish subscribers waiting for more HD. I'm also happy as a D* subscriber because the pressure on D* to increase their HD offerings just went up ten-fold. Maybe they can find space for more national HD on the new bird?

Glad to see the "Animal-centric" Animania channel also made the cut. ;)

Funny, how strangely silent the Dish-bashers are on this thread ....

Why, you could hear a pin drop.

Oh, DirectTV fanboys, why aren't you telling us how much Dish sucks and how you will some day have thousands and thousands of HD channels?

Ok, I'll be good.

I'm glad I'm a Dish subscriber. I have said, I don't know how many times, that you can't tune in "announcements" and that Dish has been much more reticent to make announcements about future programming.

If the channels show up on cable, and even DirectTV, great.

I just wish all this "my provider is the best" crap would stop on these boards. It's so tiresome.

Best, is what's best for you, based on your needs and wants.

(However, this will make Dish the best HD provider for now :D )

When I signed up this morning the CSR was clueless about the VOOM channels. Not surprising since the news is still pretty fresh but even her supervisor knew nothing.

I'm not crazy about the two-year contract but I am keeping my fingers crossed that they eventually get all of the VOOM 21 and that their PQ is at least close to VOOMs.

This has been a long strange trip indeed for those of us who loved VOOM. But in the end, you could argue that this might be the best outcome overall. In fact, if you were paranoid or a conspiracy fanatic, you might think that this was the Dolan plan all along. To make a splash in the HD world with the VOOM originals, create a giant complex soap-opera, and all the associated publicity and then sell the hardware/devlierey system and retain the programming. Now that makes sense since Rainbow has always been about programming. With the VOOM 21, DISH takes the HD lead and Dolan has his first paying customer for his programming. In the end, that's where this was heading.

It's a bit more expensive for me at this point (by about $10-15) but knowing that the VOOM 21 will all be there eventually, and that Rainbow is still producing content, I think the trauma of losing VOOM is now over. My install is 5/9.

Pulling the sat cable off the VOOM box tonight.

Its a real shame that Dish probably wont use vooms best thing (the networked DVR)....
Don't be so sure ...

Stranger things have happened.

However, I would say Dish *doesn't quite get* the whole high-end hardware concept.

Having my E* installed this Sunday, May 1. V* dish on the roof, V* boxes in three rooms, swap em out and turn on the new receivers and, whoa, hey, V*'s still there (sort of). I even had it set up for a two-dish set up so I could get all available Chicago area locals and possibly CBS-HD, so this works out absolutely perfect (not knowing which bird/angle the programming will shoot from, or did I miss something, seems likely 61.5, right?).

Now that's what I call a great end result for those of us HD lovers who have been vocally hoping for such an outcome.

If anybody from the various companies involved is reading this thread, let me be the first soon-to-be-former-Voom-sub and soon-to-be-Dish-sub to say a huuuge THANKS.

Why a two-year contract? The offer I heard was one year.

Why are you baiting?

I for one am happy to hear Dish picked these up, though I've never been a subscriber to them or Voom. ST is more important to me and I can't afford both, so D* it is for the next several years.

So, why am I happy? It's simple, Dish made a commitment to help ensure these channels weren't canned. Maybe one day (or year) D* will follow suit and pick them up as well.

It's one thing for D* not to add more HD content because there isn't any and another thing if they don't have the bandwidth. Add the bandwidth then add the content. If there was no content, adding bandwidth would do nothing.

Kudos to Dish.

ALL made the cut. :) Otherwise I highly doubt HDNews or Animania could make the cut... it's painful that my best movie channels are missing but at least I have a promise I'll get them back by 2006... or I shouldn't believe Dish?
Not so much baiting ... I just wish, as Panther suggested on another thread, that we could see an end to the constant barrage of abuse of Dish around here, and see some of the vociferously vocal abusers give them their due ... today they hold the trump card.
Well I have to admit it did come across as baiting to me. I don't really see how anyone really has, as you put it, "The Upper Hand" since the deal with E* isnt something exclusive. I think its a safe bet we will see other providers, sat & cable, also pick up channels as well. This may actually be a boon for EVERYONE as the other main services will need to pick up some just to be competitive. Truthfully tho I can not in any way shape or form justify switching to E* & being locked into a yrs commitment at this point just to obtain the 1 Voom channels they picked that I like Monster HD. Maybe cable will pick a mix that has more of the ones I watch, like KungFu, but I'll wait n see.

Has anyone heard if these are "no charge" additions to the HD Pack?
Thanks God I signed up with E* last week and left my VOOM dish pointing at 61.5!!! Now we know why Chuck Dolan misteriously changed his mind at the end and voted to shutdown VOOM.
Just got a note from Mark Cicero (Corporate Communications Manager) of Dish.

The new Voom HD channels will only be on the 61.5 Dish!!!!
All of us who can't see 61.5 and use 148 are screwed!
Let's complain, this is not fair!
Hmmm. Anyone know if a dual pole mount can be done (61.5 + 110/119)?
Will we be getting these 10 channels automatically if we are getting their $10 HD package (which includes Discovery HD, etc.)???
Whatever benefits one provider, will eventually benefit all. It's called competition.
Sure, Dish will gain some new subscribers, and it's competition will lose some. It's always that way.
Unless you are sitting on the fence, I don't see any reason to react strongly one way or the other. Each provider will have it's day in the sun.

There is more to 'content' than just the fact it is available in HD. Any of us who have been watching a while certainly can relate to that.

We are not likely to see more bandwidth until they do another launch along with providing HD locals. We can always use more BW, let's just hope we don't get less in the bargain.
I also hope these are added in the existing HD channel lineup, and not added on for a 'nominal' fee. Otherwise, we have gained less in terms of value.
