Harmony 880 at Best Buy - Page 4

I picked mine up at BB on Wednesday. They had about 6-7 on display with the other remotes. According to the sales rep at Harmony, BB was NOT supposed to display the 880 until May 9th... au contraire'

I think it is just normal to feel comfortable with what they are used to.
Her liking it should make it a 10! I am pretty sold on it now, as you said it will take time.
The only two things are the clicking from the D-Pad, which I am getting use to.
The other is the IR transmitter seems not as strong as the 659 was, or the window it beams thru is smaller, but I seem to have to point the 880 right at the TV and Stero beside it, for it to work 100%.
I seem to remember with the 659 I could point at it either or and both would responde. The Linksys Media Server (WMA11B) seems to the the worse about not responding off axis I guess.
I'll tinker some more with it.

If the codes for the device you have arent in there, you can create the device in the library, learn the comands from the remote you havem and add it to your IR Library for future use. That feature comes in handy when you have a unique device like a mutiplexer for multible security cams around a house. You can then make a "Security Cameras" page and add buttons like "front door cam" that will got to that input on the multiplexer. The down side is that it retails for around $600+. Im hoping you can make pages and custom labled buttons on the 880.
Take this with a grain of salt, I am not 100% down with the Harmony's yet.
The 880 does have a docking station (cradle) that will charge the Li-Ion battery and play a slide Show whilst in the craddle (yes you can use your own pictures). I think you can do a macro if you want, you just have to play around with the setup on the internet. Make an account, and pretend you have a 880 and see what you can do, you will not have a remote to download too, but you can see if Marcos can be done. I know you can add different devices and do special commands with time delays and such, but I would find a Harmony Guru on this site to ask to make sure. Or call their tech support.

The 880 can also learn a remote code if it's not known in their library, there is an IR reciever on the rear of the Harmony

does this help?
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/pr...S/EN,CRID=2079

They do mention light controllers too.

You can rename activites too, so you can call them what ever you want, I don't see why the mutiplexer would not work, but call HARMONY to MAKE SURE.

Reagrds, matt

Clicking? What clicking!? I've played with this thing for three days now and never noticed the clicking until after reading your note and running into the living room to check if mine really did click. Guess I'll have to get use to it now! Thanks y'all.

Just picked mine up at BB in Scranton(Dickson City). They had 5 in stock when I called. I picked it up around 3:00ish and there were only 3 left...I have it charging right now for awhile. I can't wait to program it and test it out tonight...It was packaged very well. I liked the vibrant colors of the box.

I also picked one up at BB today. The BB in E Palo Alto (CA) didn't have them yet, but the one in San Carlos had 4. I saw 2 on the shelf - one of which I purchased - not sure if the other 2 were "in back" or if they were just going that quickly.

I'm charging it right now. I've got a few brief questions for experienced Harmony users.

1- Is there any advantage to using the PC software over the Mac ? I've got both, but tend to use my Mac more, so I'd prefer that. But if the PC software has more features I'll fire up the XP box.

2- When configuring devices on the web site, I've noticed that they would have multiple choices for a given device (e.g. Motorola 6412 DVR), and they'd just list them (alphabetically?) in the menu. How is a newbie to the product to pick the "best" choice?

3- (880-specific) I peeled off the protective cover w/example picture from the LCD screen. But in so doing I peeled a bit of what might be a protective sheet off of the lower left corner (outside of the area of the actual LCD). Is that meant to be completely removed, or did I scuff up my brand-new toy on the first day?

I picked mine up at the BB in Framingham , MA. They had two. I was a bit confused about how to enter the 6412 but I talked to support and they quickly answered my questions. BTW I got the 30 sec skip function to work on the 6412 as well. I love this unit!

The protective cover on the bottom should be removed as well so don't worry.

Enjoy...

Trying to upload photos (proper size/160k) for the slideshow function. You are supposed to be able to add 8 photos, but the max I can add is 4. I get the "unable to reconnect" error message or whatever it says. Anyway, is anyone else having trouble adding more than 4 photos to the 880 for the slideshow function? Anyone got a fix? Haven't had time to call Logitech yet.

Thanks...Mark

Yep, I got that and a couple of other memory related errors. Tech support gave me a link for downloading a newer version of the client software:

http://images.harmonyremote.com/Easy...staller4.4.exe

It fixed my problem.

Thanks, but I need the Mac version.

Just replace the ".exe" extension with ".dmg":

Just picked mine up today. Can anyone tell me why I shop at BB so much though? Before I decide to make the 30 minute drive I call them up and ask if they have any 880s in stock. I also inform him that they probably just came in and that they wouldn't be in the store's computer or online. The guy says "Nope, sorry we don't "got" any" in about 5 seconds. I figure that I'm going there anyways to buy some DVDs so might as well check myself.

I walk to the universal remote section and BAM they are sitting right in the middle of the shelf. I ask to speak to a manager. I tell him how I called up and asked if they had any in stock and that he didn't even check. Well anyways, after chatting with him for about 10 minutes about how this has happened before when I bought my Sammy DLP he offers a $50 gift card.

I picked up the last 880 @ Best Buy in Pensacola, FL tonight!

Mine's in the charger as I type this and I can't wait to get to the programming!

How long does it take for the battery to initially charge to full capacity?

Got my 880 today (first Harmony) at the BB in Marboro, Ma.

Reading some other postings around the net, I decided to download from the web vs using the CD provided with the 880. Ran into problems until support provided me a link for the 4.4.0 s/w.

I set it up basically and now it's charging. Will test in the morning.

Best Buy 512 in Melbourne now has 3 Harmony 880s for sale.

Would have had 4 but I couldn't resist buying one tonight. :) Several other HT & PC employees are eyeing them too so no guarantees about how long the 3 will last...

They really are hit or miss (Best Buy that is). I went to the store in Springfield, Va. They showed on the 'puter that they did not have any in stock, but several stores did. They called their other stores and was as frustrated as I was when you call them. Right about the same time, a new truck came with a delivery, and the Home Theather manager went through it and found 5 of them. It took about 10 minutes to place it into the system, but at least they went the extra mile to get it for me. The BB near my house is pretty much worthless.

I am having problems with the 880 switching input for the Dell HD4200. I am just about ready to call support.

Any ideas on when this remote is going to be in Canada?

Anyone know the max file size to add to the slideshow?

Per FAQ:

For best results, your image should be: width: 128 pixels
height: 160 pixels
depth: 24 pixels

If your image is smaller than this, then it will be stretched to fit these settings. If your image is larger than this, then it will be shrunk to fit these settings.

The maximum file size is 160 KB for each image you wish to upload. If your image size if greater then 160 KB you will need to use image editing software to reduce the size.

Thanks, I also notice that it is best to have your image at that exact size before uploading to prevent the picture from looking off when it is reduced or enlarged. One more thing I noticed, don't have your image too contrasty because the screen on the 800 will enhance it.

I am still having problems updating my 880. It is also happening on the replacment remote. I've also tried bypassing my router and going straight to the modem. I then tried it on my mac and got it to somewhat update, but after it says that it is unable to re-connect to the Harmony remote and tries again, with the same results, but when I unplug it from the usb cable, it is updated. Go figure! Hey, as long as it works.

Sorry if I posted this before in response to your question...

I had the error message "unable to reconnect to Harmony" and some other memory related problems. Tech support had me upgrade to the 4.4 version of the client software and the error has not re-occurred since.

Windows:

http://images.harmonyremote.com/EasyZapper/Downloads/LogitechHarmonyInstaller4.4.exe

Someone else posted a link for the Mac version. From memory I believe it was: http://images.harmonyremote.com/Easy...staller4.4.dmg

The only difference was the suffix on the Mac version. I hope I remembered it correctly

Yep, I noticed the same thing. I believe this is because the error is generated after the update has been done (burned) and the software is going through a verification phase. (Watch the messages in the update window.) I can not tell whether it is after the verification is complete or during the verification, but a re-boot of the Harmony is required. This is when the error is generated. So, the only time the Harmony should not work correctly after this error is if a write error were made before the verification step. FWIW

It is funny that I was going through tech support while this this and I was mentioning the error message in red, and they could not figure it out. Only when I unplugged it and mentioned to them that I have the activities screen in front of me, then they said "why don't you try it out". I don't foresee updated this thing too much, so I can live with this!

Hmmm... wouldn't be too quick to say that. I have found myself tweaking, adding icons and other things the wife considers a "boys and their toys" thing.

BTW, one operational item of which I was not aware sent the initial WAF to zero before I realized the problem. After updating the remote, it seems you should either power down everything before using the remote or at least use Help to resynchronize. She picked up the remote after I made a quick update (changed an icon!) and was instantly complaining how the new remote would not change either the volume or channels. After I resynchonized everything, showed her how it worked, took her through using the Help button, and had her use it on her own, the WAF improved significantly. She even said that the new remote was "really cool" and much easier to use than the old ones (we needed 2 to 4 depending on the activity).

I got the 880 2 days ago and it works great. My only concern is I can hear a little rattling from inside the remote. I thought it could be the motion sensor, but I want to check with everybody else. Does anybody else's 880 rattle?
