Porcupine Tree "Deadwing"The Next Hot DVD Audio Disc - Page 5

Yes, if you have a DTS decoder it will play and all Sony players have DTS decoders, but if your using your Receivers decoder, it will need to have the DTS decoder, which it should.

I recently bought Deadwing for $16 with free shipping from Buy.com. They also have IA for $16 with free shipping. So I'd say go that route instead of acousticsounds. And these are both great discs. I've only had a little time with Deadwing, but I like what I've heard so far.

And yes, these should play on any DVD player. Remember, since you will not be able to use the hi-rez DVD-Audio tracks, all you're doing is playing a DTS track. At that point, these discs become no different than if you were playing the DTS track of Saving Private Ryan, or LOTR, etc. As long as either your DVD player or receiver have a DTS decoder, you're fine.

Assuming your Sony DVD player and receiver can play DTS movie soundtracks, you should have no problem with the Porcupine disks.

Just got the discs and wow, the DTS track rocks. I already loved this album, and this DTS version makes it even better !

If you're Sony does not play DVD-Audio, which it sounds like, then you can only play both Deadwing and In Absentia on your Sony in the non-hi res DTS versions of the albums, which sound nice in 5.1, but nowhere near the DVD-Audio hi-res versions, which just kick serious butt.

It's hard to imagine that the DVD-A version would sound that much better, as the DTS version is great. As far as hi-res goes, on the disc, it lists the specs for DVD-A and DTS, and the technical specs are exactly the same. Makes me wonder if there really is a difference between the two versions on this disc.

Well, as to how much better the DVD-A sounds than the DTS, it is somewhat subjective, but yes it should and generally will sound better than the DTS. When you say the technical specs are exactly the same, I don't think that is the case. Even if the DTS sounds great, it is still a compressed format, while the DVD-A is lossless. In practical terms, the DVD-A should sound better than the DTS.

In the real world, a really well-mastered or poorly mastered DTS track, or differences in equipment, can either lessen or broaden the differences between the hi-rez DVD-A track and the compressed DTS track. In my case, to be honest, I have only listened to the DVD-A track on Deadwing. But maybe I'll try to listen to the DTS track to compare.

The two formats are worlds apart. DTS is a loosey format where as DVD Audio is a loss less PCM format. Even though the DTS track is very good it is pretty compressed compared to the DVD Audio versions.

As far as Sony players there is no player Sony makes that plays DVD Audio, Sony only produces SACD machines.

Some of the newer DVD Players and AV receivers have DTS 96/24 resolution playback and as long as you use both and the disc is a DTS 96/24 then you will get hi res otherwise the most you will get with DTS is the 48/24, but it is still a loosey format.

Technically they are not the same.

I picked up Deadwing DTS about a month ago and have been giving it a serious listen. Since I'm a recent fan, I can't comment on their earlier works, but this band definitely has classic elements. I like this album better than In Absentia. Very interesting. I wonder how they are doing with their word of mouth marketing. It's certainly not mainstream, but it's a great sound. Be nice to see them get some more pub.

I can find the Deadwing [DVD Audio/Video] online at circuitcity.com and CDUniverse, but I only see In Absentia as a DTS CD. Anyone know where I can order both as DVD-A?
Amazon... below are links to both:

In Absentia DVD A

Deadwing DVD A

Both in stock... says only 1 of Deadwing though :)

This can be very confusing. The record company that released the DVD-A is DTS. So the DVD-Audio disk will say DTS on it. This is not a reference to the multi-channel encoding process used.

AFAIK, there is no DTS-only - non-DVD-Audio version of In Absentia.

Enjoy a grand evening of Porcupine Tree on DVD-A:

In Absentia
Deadwing
Stupid Dream (CD + DVD-A)

Stupid Dream is phenomenal, but that's another thread ;)

Cool, thanks for the links. perhaps I will get Stupid Dream and the new Live DVD after I absorb Deadwing and In Absentia.

It's a shame the way they lable (or not) MC releases. I got burned buying the Stones digipac once and received Redbook CDs, so I try to confirm what I am ordering for online orders.

I just deleted my original Amazon order for DeadWing and In Absentia and reordered both of these along with the "Arriving Somewhere" DVD. Looks like these are taking the slow boat with an est. delivery time of 10/23-28

If it's being delayed becuase of free shipping.. pony up for the cheapest option.. you won't be sorry... And since you are getting the DVD at the same time, can I reccomenf the first track being "Hatesong" in DTS?

Don't miss Gavin Harrisons "Cymbal Song" on the 2nd DVD of "Arriving..." Simply amazing.
Nah, I'll wait it out... the bill is already $50 as it is with free shipping. I'm in no big hurry. I alreeady have Deadwing, Stupid Dream and the Sky... in redbook CD to hold me over. The delay on the first order actually allowed me to cancel and add in the live DVD to a new order and still get in on the free shipping.

What sux is they have Stupid Dream (CD+DVD), but it says 1-2 MONTHS for delivery. I won't get sucked into a long shipping order and then have to monitor/remember it near December. I may just go with CDUniverse and pay the $3 S/H.

EDIT- looks like they shipped on 10/8 via USPS. :) Interesting that the USPS is working on a Sunday

PT goodness has arrived from Amazon, ahhhhh. Listenng to In Absentia now, very nice.

Just got back from the LA show.... amazing.. Way too loud, but amazing.. the first hour of the show was new material for the new album.... Much harder rock than Deadwing, and some amazing songs.. SW said the album would be out in the spring.
