Sony DHG-HDD250/500: Official Thread - Page 837

And from the FWIW Department biggrin.gif

And in adding to all the brains above: The inability of the Sony Box to process the newer digital Rovi stream and the changes to the local station equipment explains the “three” phases of 1) Not working to 2) Working, and now 3) Not working again in Houston since the digital transition.

In Houston OTA:

Phase I:
Immediately after the transition the normal HostSUFlag was 0xe68 and sometimes 0xf78.

Phase 2 (just over a year long):
It worked – 0xff8

Phase 3:
Only 0xee8 is reached rather quickly. It has been that way since 6/30/2012 regardless the number of NumSearch’s. That was because of a “new hardware firewall” at the local station.

All three phases above were because of the very slight differences in either software or hardware changes to the local station firewall.

If Sony needs only some new flags, then I will be happy to mail them some. What colors do they need? And I will send them right away.

The local station may still be tinkering with the firewall; but honestly my chances of winning the lottery are a million times greater.

I think white would be best.

I knew I was going to jinx myself bragging about how good my DVR was working. About the same time yours came back on line, mine started getting less and less data. It was still populating the grid, but only about 40%. Today, I had a restart mid playback and it won't even get the clock. Turned it off and am now exersizing my patience. I'll re-build my make-shift indoor antenna tomorrow if the clock doesn't come back by then.

Makeshift antenna seems to be working. Got the clock back last night and the grid is slowly populating. Still a lot more to be filled in, but it's definitely loading...slowly.

My cable company gave me a present today also. They changed all my HD channels to one decimal place. That might not mean much to some, but now I can map my HD channels to guide channels. For the first time since buying my DHG I can now record from the guide. They even posted on their analog BBS channel a map of the new channel numbers.

Not having a PSIP with these channels is now not so bad. I understand the cable company is doing a lot of upgrades. If they change the other 120 clear QAM channels I may have to buy a new remote.

Looks like we both had a good day.

They responded amazingly quickly and the response was amazingly to-the-point compared to past communications I've had with them.

Did TVGOS just stop?

My cable company has been pretty good supporting TVGOS. They even established analog channel 50 to provide the data, back when the country was switching from analog to digital TV.

Well, I just stopped getting updates.

I have three devices that use TVGOS. The two that use the analog channel 50 just stopped getting updates. Plus, my one device that got the data from an OTA digital station (I think KYW), also stopped getting data.

That leans to my question if TVGOS just died?

See my reply on the TVGOS thread. Legacy data is perfect on my SE feed.

No, in Philly KYW TVGOS data is still flowing OTA just fine as of this morning (it was out for a week or so a few weeks back, but has been solid, though seemingly a tad slow, since it returned). I can't address your cable issues, but as far as OTA, it's business as usual; I have full listings through next Monday, and a smattering of listings for next Tuesday, which is typical for the morning.

Just an observation...
Had a power outage today. Power off for an hour. When it came back on, the DVR obviously had the wrong time on it. Waited over an hour, but the clock wouldn't reset. Went to (PhillY) channel 3.1 and did the 9012 test and the clock came back instantly. Have cable and a jury rigged inside antenna that gets OTA KYW because I suspect my cable TVGOS isn't working. Just thought it was interesting I had to do that with the .21 software. I thought that was one of the primary purposes of that release, so you wouldn't have to do that anymore.

If you left it off and waited more time, it would have probably come back eventually on its own. KYW's TVGOS packets seem to be flowing a bit slower these days since they added a new subchannel. We had a power failure recently and I didn't even pay any attention to it, but by the time I needed it (that evening), it was back to normal.

My digital tuner died. mad.gif

I thought maybe there was an issue with my antenna, but after a great deal of troubleshooting, and plugging-in my old LG LST-4200A, I have determined that the tuner broke. Analogue tuner still functions.

What to do???
I've already had this machine repaired once (new HDDs), but I don't know if the repair center can/will do anything for the digital tuner...nor do I know if it's even worth it anymore.
Time to retire the DHG and build a HTPC?

I'm really bummed out.

Don't be bummed. Try the TV Guide / Exit front panel reset (press and hold the front panel TV Guide and Exit buttons, for a few seconds), that usually fixes a tuner that shows all black channels.

^ Woo-hoo! Thank you, Mark! That fixed it. smile.gif

New bummer is I think I'm going to have to go through Host Channel Hell. Will look at that later. Thank you again!

You hopefully won't have to. It is rare for the TV Guide/Exit reset to wipe your grid.

Mark
That happens occasionally over here. I usually just unplug it and plug it back in. It doesn't wipe out the grid, but obviously the clock needs to be reset. Not a problem when data is available. Don't know why it happens. Sometimes, only certain channels will be blacked out, but others still work. Nothing will get the missing channels back until I re-cycle power...or do what mabuttra said. I'll give that a try next time.
First time this ever happened to me in 7+ years. I'm glad it was such a simple fix. Grid stayed intact, so hopefully everything is kosher again...

Anyone having issues with TVGOS on WUSA in DC metro? I'm unable to get correct clock after a forced TV Guide 9012 check on channel 509 FIOS. That never happens unless the TVGOS stream is screwed or unavailable.

My clock is 7-8 seconds slow. It's been that way for a few months. Time is usually quite global. You might check your last clock set in the 753.... display.

Hello All:
Slightly different take on our favorite recorder. Reception issues (southern Rhode Island) / box performance ( OTA only) all ok - with exception of loss of most Boston/Mass based stations due to a tower repair. Question I do have aside from just replacing remote - is there any way to restore contact points on most used remote buttons? Fast advance and many of other most used - require multiple attempts and holding button depressed - to get it to work. Mind - been using every day - since 2005. Thinking of going over to that Hopper thing - where one can record 6 networks plus programs playing at your neighbors - all at once.

But thats only if I can't get my remote to work.

Peace.
Barry

I've had good luck with a conductive ink pen. pop the case apart and clean the board contacts with a Q-tip and alcohol. Do the same on the carbon pills on the keypad, then use the pen on the carbon pills on the key pad. Don't use to much as it could flake off and cause other problems, but it keeps the remote going for awhile.

New remotes sell for $26 frequently on eBay. I have bought two with no issues.

For the past 2 days my DHG (OTA only) will no longer bring up any user interface. It will respond to change channels and the transport buttons (fast forward, pause, etc but without showing the timeline) but when I try to bring up the Sony menu or the TVGOS menu it then no longer reponds to any commands. The current channel still plays fine and the clock is correct. It will respond to power off/on and when back on its back to as previously described. Anyone else run into this? I've tried a soft reset with the front panel buttons and also unplugging it with no luck. In the past I've had issues with listings, the clock, and a few reported hard disk errors but it's always come back to life like a champ. I hope it's not down for the count. Perhaps it will rise on the 3rd day.

Speculation: wrong resolution for screen type or the unit is stuck in demo mode. Check post#1. If you search the thread there are 33 posts on demo mode.

You're the man. It was in SD out mode. The odd thing is it was still sending HD to the TV and seemed fine pic-wise.

Update on Houston

With a new firewall installed at the local station KHOU around June 30th, the Sony could no longer process the Rovi data. That spell lasted for the month of July.

Around July 30th or so, adjustments were made and since August 1st the Sony has been able process the data again with new Host Channels Sets on a regular basis. Generally, it all appears to be back to normal. “Normal” there is just so much in that word; like what is “normal”?

Anyway, Houston is working.

Yep, but the menus were being sent to the SD screen, which you couldn't see!

DHG-HDD500 with latest firmware. Location: Arlington, Texas... probably the same as Dallas, TX?

Daughter going to college in Arlington, TX. Her on campus apartment comes with Basic Cable from Time Warner included. Unfortunately, her old HD LCD TV(Samsung LN-S2352W)does not have an onboard QAM tuner, so I've been looking at buying a $50 digital to analog converter. Then, I remembered my little used Sony DVR. She can rent a cablecard for only $2 a month.

Will the Sony with TW cablecard work like an digital to analog converter or even work at all?
What is the guide availability like in Arlington?

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Since nobody else more knowledgeable has responded.. I'm troubled by your thinking that a digital to analog converter is needed. If the TV has no tuner (of any kind) then it has no antenna input which a converter would connect to. I don't think that is what you really want in any case. What you need is a digital TV tuner. Now even though the Sony is/has a digital TV tuner it isn't exactly plug and play if you take a look at the forum here. I don't have cable so I can't speak to the cablecard option, but it seems to make things more complicated than they would be anyway. Hope this helps some.

Jack, it's not like I haven't wanted to answer your post, it's just that there are too many unknowns.
1 - What does the "basic cable" supply and how (analog, digital or both?)
2 - Sometimes the package supplied by a cable feed to apartments is modified and even a cable card might not fix it.
3 - A cable card is not a digital-to-analog converter. The DHG is analog and digital already anyhow.
4 - All cable is local.
5 - Does the apartment get TVGOS (cable or ota), since you need that to set the clock on a DHG?
6 - Does the TWC local office offer a DTA? It might be free and she can then use her Samsung TV (not high quality from a DTA), but sometimes free.

See our problem? Too many unknowns.
