I'd have to see them both side to side to determine if their i a "HUGE" improvement like you say, but i doubt it.

I'd like to see a 50" 1080i monitor displayed right next to a 50" 1080p monitor.

For some people, going from 480i to 480p is'nt really that noticeable, i think the same will hold true for 1080p, just a little sharper and more stable probably since it's progressive.But i don't see a night and day difference.

Of coarse 1080i would'nt display good on a computer since computers are native progressive displays.

I'd really like to see how good 1080p is when it get's released, but something just keeps telling me it's not going to be the drastic of an improvement over 1080i.

We'll see.

BTW, why would a 1080P display be made for the PS3 and not anything else? Silly thread title.

just catching up on the thread... This is all speculation, but....in the example above, 1080p would be fine and dandy, *IF* Doom 3 was the epitome of graphics......

I would MUCH rather have higher res textures, better shading, normal mapping, ect. at 1080i/720p than D3 quality at 1080p.....Of course, we'd all like to have the best of both worlds. At some point in the next-gen consoles' life cycle(specificly the PS3), however, devs will have have to choose between graphics and resolution....I can see Sony demanding a 720p min, but a 1080p requirement seems like a waste.

I just don't see DVD going the way of the VHS when Blue-Ray/HD-DVD come online. IMO, 1080p will be a niche media format at the very least for several years, ala DVD-A and SACD. Most people think a 480p DVD on an HDTV looks great, let allone a true hi-def signal. Most of us here would love 1080p, but were the exception....

Yeah i agree, 1080i and 720p are just fine.

going from 1080i t0 1080p is'nt really that much of a huge improvement, it's like going from 480i to 480p in which the differences are very little.

I think it was mainly a way to show that the thread tied into the gaming forum more than anything else. Blu-ray players and HTPCs will also greatly benefit from 1080p displays.


True, there are soon going to be games far better looking than Doom 3, but Doom 3 is a big leap over anything that could be done with the current generation of consoles.


Would like to point out that rendering for 1080i is almost the same as rendering for 1080p so the difference between them in processing power would be small. As for what resolution would most be chosen by game developers that will probably end up being 720p since it is the easiest to do, but it is still to early to tell how often 1080p will be used on the PS3. Also 1080p rendered games would look better on 1080i displays than 720p rendered games so 1080p rendering would actually benefit both 1080i and 1080p displays. A rather good side benefit of 1080p rendering.


The difference between a 480i and 480p display is rather noticeable which is why 480p was used with computer monitors (text and fine detail are absolutely killed on a 480i display). Also a good benefit of 1080p rendered games is that they would look better on 1080i displays than games rendered at 720p.

Good points, Richard. 1080i vs. 1080p rendering differences from the GPU's perspective will not be huge. However, compared to 720p, rendering at 1080p requires the system to render 125% more pixels per frame. That is significant. A 1080p display should also be able to handle scaling 720p material well.

Even though scaling 720p games to 1080i would cause certain IQ issues, I'd still rather have it this way than force devs to dumb down the graphics of their games so they could be rendered at 1080p@60hz.

First time poster here. Just curious if anyone knows if the PS3 will be able to upconvert standard DVD's to HD?

Has not been confirmed yet though I believe it is very likely.
