12 hours of HD vid on Toshiba 45gig HD-DVD

They are getting those number by utilizing AVC or VC-1 at roughly 8.5 Mbps. You could squeeze HD encoding into those datarates but it of course wouldn't look as good as 12-15Mbps. But for the sake of marketing they indeed have every right to make this claim.

I call this the "Walmart" approach. Quantity over Quality! It's the American way!

My guess is 6mbps for video and 2 for audio

God would that suck royally, on the other hand HD-DVD only needs to prove it can cram it in, not that it will be watchable :)

yup, I usually smile while laughing, I guess your TV does the same thing while it is laughing at such a dumb decision as picking HD-DVD if BR is available:)

I'm a little lost here. How can one put 12-hours worth of HD content (at what bitrate and using what CODEC) on a 45-GB disk? Between this and the 1080i-only output Toshiba may need a one-way ticket back to Japan.

Ahem fellas. The thread is concerned with video only. Had audio entered into the equation then obviously hitting 12 hrs would be nigh impossible.

It says 45GB HD-DVD, never said one disk, it takes 3 of them

HD-DVD is real close in production cost to DVD, well at least the red HD-DVD costs the same

I suppose you could say 384Kbps DD wouldn't affect the 8Mbps number much. And maybe there is a VBR for audio to get that down farther.

Clearly no HD DVD-ROM is likely to be manufactured with no audio. What should be quoted is the time for an expected release.

DVD came out with a claim of 135 minutes on a single layer (2GB per DVD hour)
HD DVD comes out claiming 4 hours on a single layer (3.75GB per HD DVD hour)

I never thought I'd ever use the term CONSERVATIVE to refer to the marketing number of single layer DVD. :)

Maybe each disk comes with a software scaler and its really just doing 480P and scaling. :)

I know in the DirecTV sense it means exactly that!
