Just to let you know, I was doing some web surfing and saw a 42" HD plasma for under $MSRP Only with free shipping. Brand is something called a 3G and the model is OP-42TN2. Says 3000:1 contrast, PIP, PBP, POP. Display is 1024x768. Includes speakers, stand, remote, etc.
(1) Y/C in (S-Video)
(1) RF (75 ohm F-Type)
(1) Component (Y, Pb, Pr) RCA

(1) PC (RGB) 15-Pin D-sub
(4) Audio inputs (1 for PC and DVI, 1 for component and S-Video, 2 for AV)
(1) External speaker output

I know nothing about this set. Just thought I'd post the info and surprised how cheap they are getting. Not saying it has a good picture, this is just an FYI.
Did a bit more searching. Looks like it is made by a company called OrCom. Not sure, but I think it's Korean. They have a website with this set on it. Lists contrast as 10,000:1, but doubtful. Again, I know nothing about this and am not looking to get one. Just wanted to let all of you know.

Yeah. I just saw this listed on tech bargains. 42" HD 1024x768 for $$$$. WOW. What's the catch? No HDMI, no list of HD signals supported. I'm really curious. Manufacturers site:
dub dub dub dot orcom.co.kr slash 42t2.asp Should I put my order in? ;)

gemstarusa is the name you should google to find the hompage of 3G, they seem to make a lot of cheap lcd monitors, no info on the plasma, but hopefully thats because its not coming out till june and they will update their site accordingly
post #10 of 717
The information I saw showed contrast ratio at 3000:1, not 10000:1. That's certainly more believeable.

At that price, it's tempting to pre-order just on spec. If it doesn't live up to the promises it could always be returned. Until 6/30, even the shipping is free!

They are using LG Plasma Display Panels.

Any thoughts about their quality?

Some More Links:

Specifications from a 3rd party site

Manufacturer's Specification

This is at least $600 cheaper than the cheapest out there; almost 50% less than the stree price of the latest generation Panasonic.

Orcom Usa Web Site

Manual for the EDTV Version (42TN1) and the regular version (42TN2) in Korean

Their web-site suggests that they also own the Pagnor brand which is being sold in Canada.

I have a feeling that gemstar is just a distribution company which owns the 3G brand name. Orcom is the OEM of this product.

Listed for $$$$ with free shipping at PC Connection

pcconnection search item # 5824463

I'm been close to buying a Panasonic, but for a grand cheaper this might be an option.. the 3000:1 ratio is an improvmemt over most secondary brand displays.

Here's what Pcconnection has listed for info:

3G sought to define an image that would symbolize cutting edge technology, combined with top of the line features and quality. They have accomplished this with the OP-42TN2 plasma display. This 42" plasma TV provides a cinema-feel for your home theater. View widescreen broadcasts and DVDs the way they were meant to be seen. The 3000:1 panel contrast ratio produces deep blacks, brilliant whites and truly vivid colors.

With every scene, the picture is clear and vivid, capturing and revealing every detail, even in bright light. Plasma screens are impervious to picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems.

With a plasma screen you get colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile: the OP-42TN2 is a mere 3.54 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting. It comes with a stand, speakers and tuner.

Hmmmm... interesting.
Anyone see the 50" (as seen on the ORcom website) listed anywhere?

If it too is priced proportionally lower than the Panasonic, that might be extremely tempting as well. :D

Hey BayAreaFan...

Changed the t to the l.
Yup, the 50" seems to be the NEC panel. It has a higher resolution than the 42" panel. I wish I knew Korean. I could then search Korean sites for reviews.

The PC Connection web site is offering free shipping (standard ground shipping) through 6/30/05. So shipping is indeed included in the price.

Jah, mon... same res. as the Panny 50".
So, they are re-branding LG 42' and NEC 50's... very interesting. I wonder where the electronics are coming from.

If the PQ is good on these plasma's (and that's a BIG 'if'), then it's the deal of the month! ;)
Especially with PCcon's free ship! Yeowzer.

Sorry new at all this Shane.... What is the "PQ" ? picture quality?
PQ = Picture Quality

I think I know why PCConnection is taking pre-orders at such a low price.
As per the FCC mandate on ATSC tuners, all TVs 36" or higher which have a built in NTSC tuner require an ASTC tuner by July 1, 2005. As a result the Orcom Plasma TV can not be sold in the US after July 1, 2005. Note that monitor sets (which lack any kind of tuner) are exempt from the FCC mandate. Only TV sets which include an analog NTSC tuner (like the Orcom TV), are required to have the ASTC tuner.

I think Orcom/3G needs to unload these TVs fast. I also noticed that their online manual has a date of April 26, 2005. So it seems the design and the manuals were finalized recently. Most probably the plasmas are in a container ship being shipped over here. They have a very low shelf life.

If pcconnection is unable to sell them out by last week of June, expect to see even lower prices!

Looking thru the english manual there's no way to adjust color or tint levels, just uses the 3 warm, cool and normal modes.
I like that you can adjust the size unlike panny having to go into the service mode, unless you use pc input.

You can adjust the brightness, contrast, sharpness, phase and frequency (Page 19). You can also control the color temprature and the turn the digital NR on off (Page 21). But you can not adjust the color saturation and tint.

I haven't looked at the manual but how is it possible that these two basic adjustments are not available? That's nutz. What were they thinking?

Ugh.... knew there had to be a serious downside somewhere (aside from not knowing anything about the PQ). Well, unless the service menu is easy to get into and adjust. ;)

If you go the the page 17, when changing the color setting, you have to first select a mode (USER). For RF, S-Video etc. it allows you to change Color and Tint, apart from Brightness, Contrast and Sharpness.

In the RGB/DVI mode the Color and Tint are replaced by Phase and Frequency buttons. But even here you have to select a USER mode.

Perhaps the systme mode is the undocumented alternate?

For Guru's out there, can you say anything about which chipset these guys are using if they can control the tint and the color in the analog (S-Video, RF modes) but do not allow the control of tint and color for the RGB (PC) and the DVI modes?

Heck I live in an area that can't get over the air signals... it's cable, sat or fuzz... So a tuner isn't really a big deal either way.., but I see your point and it might be a good explaination.

I'm leaning towards the PannyTH-42PD50U EDTV... I like the fact it has two Component Video Inputs... but this set is HD not ED and is $600 cheaper.... decisions decisions.... I just don't want to pay $1400 for something that is unknown... might be worth the piece of mind have a known brand.. My budget is right at $2000 ..... PCConnection has the 42PD50U for $$$$ shipped..

any input would be appreciated.

The "Got Apex" website posts deals on electronics. They are also talking about this 3G model sold at PCConnection. The guy from GotApex.com claims it is actually a Samsung panel. Here's what he said:
