Can anyone comment on what kind of real world contrast ratios to expect from LG 42" XGA resolution glass? Are they really capable of a true 3000:1 these days, or is that an inflated advertising number? I know LG advertises 5000:1 on the 42PX4D, but I think I recall people saying the newer pany's ED's are higher in real life.

"re they really capable of a true 3000:1 these days, or is that an inflated advertising number? "

No plasma is really capable of 3000:1 in any kind of reasonable measuring.

I accidently bumped into thiw one, and first I thought it was a typo. I mean EDTV is selling for more than this. For the price alone I WILL pull the trigger on this. I just dont want to wait for 3 months to get it though. I wonder how reliable/truswothy are PC Connection guys.

If anyone else has already pulled a trigger, please post here. Also please post your previous experience with this web site.

Thanks.

Regards

MS.

I have know of PC Connection for many years and have used them for purchasing computer parts. They are reliable. The price of this plasma seems too good to be true. But it may be worth the purchase even if quality is mediocre. I wish that I had the nerve to pull the trigger. When you get it, please inform us of the result. My kids would love it. They will probably sell out before I get a chance to order one.

Thanks,

WAM

I'm probably a dumbass because I just pulled the trigger.

After a lot of thought, I just ordered one too. I have been buying from PC Connection for something like 20 years, they are a great company who has always delivered what they promised and stood behind their products. I imagine if the display sucks they would allow it to be returned, so long as you could repackage it and ship it back.

Since I plan to use it as a TV (with DirecTV) and not as a PC monitor, it seems like it should do a good job of that. I'd be more cautious if I planned to use it with my computer.

Hi... I have also ordered this unit from Pcconnection and want to let you in on a tip on buying from Pcconnection, thanks to BayAreaFan (Post #16), who posted a flyer from Pcconnection, showing the price as $$$$.... I called Pcconnection with the flyer # and they matched the price, but had to pay $60.00 for shipping.... My total price with shipping was $$$$... For those who have already or new orders, give Pcconnection a call and get them to honor the flyer price.... You could also do 2nd day air for almost the same price as the $$$$ price, if you decide not to take the 60.00 discount as I did.... Good luck all....

Speedman.....

[MSRP ONLY]

I want to also concur that PC Connection is a top-tier vendor -- one of the technology mail-order greats.

As for this plasma, I've nearly ordered one, but I'm concerned. I once bought a Planar plasma that was priced too good to be true. And it sucked so unbelievably badly, I had to return it.

For me, this guy would be a bedroom TV and a full 15 feet from the bed. So it might do fine nevertheless. It just worries me.

Can you please post the flier # and or info.. I can't seem to load that flier file..

thanks

Looks like this thread will get locked ... so many are quoting prices, which is against the forum rules. Newcomers, pls edit your posts to remove pricing information. Anyone who wants to see the price can go to the vendors website.

Anyway, this is very tempting. Then there is the 50" from costco for about a grand more. May be I'll buy both ... this for the bedroom and 50" for the faily room.

Why is price quoting against the rules for member to member?.. I can certainly see a rule against vendor posts and vendors posting prices, but member to member?? it's only helping each other.. which I would imagine would be the reason for a forum.

just my 2 cents..

How clean of a factory environment does PDP technology need to be? Here are factory pictures.

nataraj: We can talk about the MSRP and not street prices. Since this set is available from only one vendor that is the only price we have. Once it becomes available from multiple vendors, then we stop talking.

and also got the universal mount ($59) to go along with it. They are still honoring their flier pricing but charging $60 for the shipping. Not a bad deal if this damn thing works.

Good luck to all who ordered it.

MS.

PS.
I was told by the sales lady that it should ship on 15th of June.

almost pull the trigger , but the steep 15% 'restocking' fee (+ return freight?) makes me hesitate to order a product that nobody had ever seen it in person .......
anyone had prev. experience in getting return /refund from pc connection?

thanks!
I bit the bullet and ordered one today also.

I have a PCConnection rep here at work, he's ordered one for himself.

I also have an 06/15/2005 est shipping date.

if the glass is from somewhere else, maybe not so clean ?? the glass production is what requires the cleanliness I'd imagine. They just buy the glass, hook it up to the electronics, throw it in a plastic molding, and package it.

... at least I hope...

Perhaps the low price has another explanation??? maybe a stolen truck of plasma glass somewhere?

i just contacted sales support asking about returning the unit if I don't like it. Here is what I was told:

Quote:
Good afternoon and thank you for your recent inquiry. If the product is being returned for reasons other than defective and we approve the return you will be charged a minimum restock fee of 20%.
If the set is crap and they try to charge you a bigtime restocking fee initiate a CC chargeback and let them fight it out with Visa or MC.

What is the LIST price of this product? Is this on their (ahem, the manufacturer's) website?

I second the above question to the moderator.

This is a special product being carried by only one retailer. None of the AVS Forum Sponsors carry this product or anything else close to this price-point. There is also no published MSRP.

All discussions are about advertised price with and without shipping from the same vendor who is offering free-shipping but inflating the price.

The flyer itself was not huring anyone (especially the Forum Sponsors); it would help folks here save some money.

I do respect AVS Forum policies; our sponsors who pay cash to support us have the right to benefit from them. However, implementing policies without any understanding of the intent behind the policy will not help the utility or the popularity of this board.

Was the board designed to support higher priced main-stream models only?
I doubt anyone else is selling it at this point. It's very possible that PC Connection is directly sourcing it from these guys.

You all have pushed me into ordering one. I hope that we can return it if the quality stinks. I see that some of you wrote that it is returnable, but I was told by a sales person [by phone] that it was not. Lets hope that we get lucky. I would be happy for a digital cable quality better than my 36 in. tube. I will order an HD cable box from Comcast as soon as the plasma arrives. Comcast seems to recommend component cable hook up.

What ever happens, I want to thank you all for your input and warnings. It is hard for me to believe that this world has so many problems, when there are so many that are willing to help each other for free. And Thanks to AVSforum as well.

Did they quote you a shipping date?

That was a lovely sentiment. Thanks for posting it.

I've found some intresting issues with the Orcom OP-42TN2 model. First off. the PIP functionality is not very good:

1) It only supports DVI, RGB or Component as Main picture, so you can for example not use TV as one picture and AV-in as the other, so it makes it almost impossible to view 2 SD tv signals at the same time. You cant use your VCR as second RF receiver and view 2 channels at the same time, only like DVD through component and then RF.
2) You can only swap the sound, not the picture between sub and main picture.

Secondly, it seems they use a common chipset and they are not writing the user manual themselfs. Tiger directs Techview EDTV plasma for XXXXhas IDENTICAL user manual.

tigerdirect_dot_com
aic_dot_com
If you look at the pictures, the stand, inputs, everything looks identical to the Orcom plasma, and if you look at AIC's homepage, they even use the same flower picture as display picture at this page: aic_dot_com
Isn't that weird? They are 2 different companies, and they both say they have their own factories for assembling this stuff, but they even use the same pictures on their webpages.... :)

I would guess alot of plasmas from over there, korea, malaysia, look identical, with identical user manuals and chipsets, etc.. just different company assembles the parts.

Chris,

There's got to be a typo in your post somewhere, but you repeat it twice that it's aic_dot_com.

I see a mutual fund company there...nothing to do with PDPs.

And I for one, have no doubt this is a sourced product assembled with off the rack parts and identical to several other clones built using the same parts.

It didn't stop me from jumping in and buying one.

But I would like to see the 2nd mfr site that's most likely a sister company if you could track down that typo.
