Courtesy of Mike up in British Columbia here is the 'poop' on the PT-50DL54 DLP sets. They will be posted how they are in order in the Service Manual as much as possible. The photos are not that great.

You need to to be VERY sure you know exactly what you are doing here!

Look at the bottom of the major parts list for the two fan numbers.
Fan noise varies with the set, the location and the room enviroment (hard or soft).
You can try putting sound damping material behind the set where it wouldn't be seen.
