I know, I know. It's an example of the psychosis that this hobby engenders that I have become this obsessive over a pj that I regard as, at best, a stopgap. Every evening when I get home and notice how much dimmer my x1 has become (I've added up the hours, I forgot that I had reset the timer at 752 hours - I'm now at 4132 on the original bulb) and I want to buy something (a new bulb/a new pj) YESTERDAY. Combine this hobby with an obsession for value electronics (I've built my own computers for just north of 20 years, I had my receiver before this one for 12 years) and even the purchase of a new $300 bulb becomes a orgy of cost/benefit analysis.
In all honesty I should just buy an ae700 becuase I would love a larger screen (I have a mandatory 10' throw and a wall that could do 120" (x1 can only do 85") as the street is, well, low, but in general the lcds don't seem to offer value (I'm not going to go backward from the x1's image quality) and I can't justify $2,500 for an mt700 when I'm guessing that 1080p, better quality lcds will be hitting that range in 18-24 months
I know everyone swears this can't be the case, but this goes back to the fact that the sales price of silicon has nothing to do with the cost of materials and is all about ROI - the chip and pj makers are not just competing against each other, as 60" 1080 sets reach for the ground in price they are going to have to compete relatively in order to preserve the growing pj market. and that means offering what the consumers want at the price points they are willing to buy at. Since HT pjs are a more profitable market then either rp or flat panels (substantially lower sales and handling costs, consumable follow-on sales, and higher replacement rate) it is in the manufacturers interest to keep pushing the market. Like will all semiconductor based technology market places the pj market will see acceleration in both technology change and price reduction as time goes by. They have had an interest in delaying 1080 as long as possible, but once the damn breaks things will move much more quickly.
This is a long way of saying I only need a new pj for 18 - 24 months and I don't want to spend more then 2k on the outside in that period - in general my budget for video tech is 1k per year.
