Boone/Hickory, NC - Charter - Page 2

Yes. Mine ended up being a locked up modem in the moxi. I have a friend that works at charter, he logged in and restarted it. Since then it's been ok.

I am thinking of buying a motorola box off of ebay that is the exact model of my charter STB box (2224 i think- HDTV- Digital decoder). Will this work with my cable or will i have to get it authorized by Charter? I hate paying $9.99 a month per box...thats $120.oo per year per box.

What is the scoop? thanks

See the top of this thread for important info about the HD local lineups.

I am planning on calling WCNC in the morning to complain. On top of that, we will probably miss the NFL playoff game on NBC Saturday...

Does anyone on this thread connect to Charter with the coaxial cable directly into their television? If so, it's your QAM tuner that picks up digital channels, right?

Do you know which channel is which? Some I can figure out, but not all have labels on screen. I'm finding this situation rather confusing, and would appreciate anyone's help.

Does anyone know if Charter has clear QAM channels? I'm contemplating buying an HDTV card for my computer, but don't want to if it's pointless.

Thanks, you rock! I'm in Boone, and got the letter about increasing prices coming in April. Looks like I'll be buying a HD tuner for my computer after all.

Blackcap93,

Sounds as though you are hooked up through a cable box. Is that correct?

Yes, I'm hooked up through a Moxi DVR box.

Thanks for letting me know! I"m still looking for someone with info on clear QAM channels that come in via cable connected straight to the television. I'm beginning to think that these are shifted around frequently.

Anyone having problems with ABC HD? The HD programs seem to have a frame drop every 3 seconds or so. I've noticed this issue steadily for the last two weeks. I wouldn't really mind if not for "Lost"...it makes the show unwatchable. I'm not having any problems with other HD channels, which leads me to believe it's not my box that's the issue.

This describes what happens at my house to ABC HD, and I am connected directly via cable, no box.

Can anyone give me specifics such as time and if problem presents only during "Network" part of broadcast or anytime even during commercials?

When it's happening here, it happens to both the commercials and the network broadcast.
Thanks, Gayle28607. Can anyone by-pass their cable box and go to HDTV ready tv that will tune QAM channels. Charter does not encrypt these local HD channels so you should be able to tune them easily. Also, what HD box is being used MOXI or 6208 ?
I have noticed the problem during commercial breaks as well. I don't have an HD-ready TV and I use the Moxi as the tuner. Watching "Lost" right now, I'm still seeing the stuttering. It's a shame because it's such a beautiful show in HD, and it seems like a waste to watch it in SD. How can we rectify this situation, other than complaining to Charter and having a clueless techie sent out to not fix the problem?
I do know that the broadcasters have problems that they don't want to admit. Charter receives this signal OTA at Hickory and fiber to Boone. AFAIK signal just passes thru Boone out to cable plant. Need a reliable test from someone who has only off-air HD that we can compare to. This will completely rule out the origin of the signal from WSOC as problem. If test shows still problems outside of cable land then we contact TV station...
I recently switched from Charter (a MOXI box)to Dish. I noticed the stuttering on WSOCHD before I left Charter. When I watch WSOCHD over the air or on the Dish I do not get the stuttering anymore. Sounds like a Charter problem.

Don't assume that applies to all broadcasters.

Today, Charter added the new HD channels. MTVHD, Cinemax HD, Starz HD, and ESPN2 HD. The ESPN2 HD was not even publicized. I am very happy they added it, but you would have thought they would have told us so.

Now, if we can get WCNC DT back...
yea i was shocked to see the new channels...great...especially espn2hd....i too am in hickory and experiencing the abc stuttering..on three different boxes in two different houses...actually make that 4 boxes in 3 different houses..all moxi dvrs. its unbearable..i just watch on standard def. one thing I have noticed is live entertainment a la sportscasts do not stutter...only primetime television/commercials. what about brian, lost etc. and its only been within the last month that this started. and yea losing nbc sucked as well.
I haven't noticed any ABC stutter, but I just have the MOTO HD box, not the DVR.

I knew the new channels were coming, as we got a letter in the mail about 3 weeks ago in Lenoir. But I had no idea about ESPN2. But I would give up any of them to get WCNC back. With the money spent to get those other new channels, they could have given us one less new channel and gotten WCNC back

Just that I'd say I subscribed - I work at the Hickory office in Digital operations

Very nice info on here - and you actually answered one of the things I was wondering - that the ABC issue seems to be happening reguardless of box (I recall reading that on one post)

I have noticed it does occur equally on the Moxi and the 6416 and we've been investigating it with the local ABC affiliate.

I'd also love to hear any large scale feedback on the new HDs

The information about Clear QAMs is accurate -
701-703 ("Digital lifeline" i.e. Digital PBS feeds) - Local HDs and the Music choice 901-945.

Also on the Bello Broadcasting - the convo at the top is pretty accurate - affectively it's our lawyers VS theres and they are pressing for major money. The biggest problem here is it's trend building... "Must Carry" regulations which were orgionally created for the good of the networks so they have to be carried are now being abandoned because networks feel they should get paid by us to carry their signal, even if you can get it for free with an antenna. We are doing our best to keep the costs for that down, afterall if NBC gets $$$... you think ABC and everyone else will say "oh no, keep our old agreement..."

James,
I hope you will keep tabs on this thread, as I know we have a few Charter HD people in the Hickory/Lenoir/Boone areas.

I was very happy yo see ESPN2 HD added. That was a surprise, as it wasn't advertised at all. I also stumbled upon ESPNU on the Total View tier last night. Very cool!! Is there any word on NFL Network? Do you know of any other HD channels that may be coming on the horizon?

I am really unhappy about the WCNC/Belo fiasco. Many of my favorite shows are on NBC and I now miss them in HD. I have been calling the station regularly to try and lean on them a bit. The one response I get from them a lot is try and pick it up on an OTA antenna. My respnse to them is simply, "Well, if you think I can pick it up for free OTA, why do you find it necessary to charge Charter for carrying it?" Usually, I get a good amount of hemming and hawing from them on that.

Welcome "C-J".. glad you're here. Wish other CACO's would participate.

Thanks for the welcomes -

By the way
It appears we had a sound issue on the new MHD channel (Music HD)
that was corrected last night and it checked out this morning when I came in!

I am running a Mythtv system with 2 HD tuners (QAM capable) and have been noticing the same problem with WSOC-HD noted above (dropped frames). I have programmed the system to track these events and they seem to occur mostly during specific times and broadcast types - only during HD broadcasts and rarely during commercials (or anything less than 720P.

Anybody have any insight to this problem?

We had NFL for a while, there have been some arguements between lawyers about what a fair coverage charge would be. We also had issues with their NFL on Demand service.

I was aware of the Starz! and Cinemax HD adds, but the ESPN2 and MHD even took me by suprise *L* I know we are working to add additional Local Digital and HD feeds and whenever we can get a good deal we're adding whatever services we can!

If your using one of our boxes, keep an eye on your VOD services, *rumor* has it we'll be adding a few more there soon as well (though no HD yet)

Hey James thanks a lot for the info! I'm in lenoir and the abc lost frame thing is unbearable imo...I just end up watching all of my abc shows on SD....really sucks b/c back to back lost nbc and abc hd. It makes me angry with abc bc I watched abchd flawlessly for years and then all of a sudden boom, problems. Only other thing I am experiencing is on MHD at hte top or bottom of the screen there is some pixilation or or missing frames as well...still watchable but a tad annoying. Either way the new HD channels are wonderful.

oh and nbdwt73 I have noticed the disparity with abchd messing up as well. Happens only during hd as you mention, and I mainly notice it in primetime...I guess this might be the only time the HD programs run...

One more question James, any info on why the nba package isnt offered? and will mlb extra innings be offered again this year in lue of the directv "monopoly"?

once again thanks for taking the time.

We've been asking ABC to look into our Feed, as we have reconfigured our equipment just about every way we can, with luck we'll have it soon!

That would be a forward signal issue - email me (firstname.lastname@chartercom.com - I don't put it in directly due to spam bots)
With your home phone (or the phone your account number is under) and your best contact numbers and I can see about having someone call you and schedule a technician to come out and correct those issues.

You might also be able to improve your signal level by reducing any splitters that aren't needed. Very often I'll see two three way splitters connected in line (which drops the signal down by 14 db most the time) where if you use a two way (-3.5) and two balanced three ways (-5) you'd be at -8.5 - it's only 5.5 db, but often that can mean the difference between getting a clear picture or not.

If you are using any splitters not provided by us, you might also want to consider swapping them out - we use 1ghz two way splitters... alot of aftermarket products don't support the return frequency (for example - many people kill their access to VOD simply by putting a VCR before the cable box on the line) If you need a splitter, email me and I have get ahold of one and either mail it to you or have it at the Hickory office for you to pick up (or even see if I can get one of our people in the Lenoir office to do it, I'm on pretty good terms with them since I live in Granite Falls *L*)

There's HD content during the Day (some of the morning talk shows etc) however it's the prime time programming that takes the most bandwidth because that's where they really push the content (better encoding, more action etc)

NBA used to be offered here once upon a time, I have no idea if we will be offering it again - there wasn't much customer demand for it when we last had it.

Many of our packages are controlled by outside forces - NFL is not going to happen because Direct TV locked InDemand into an exclusive contract, we had that with NASCAR, however recently I believe Direct or Dish bought up the rights for that one.

We fully intend to run MLB Extra Innings, however I've not seen any posting on InDemand's website for when the season will start and have not gotten anything from them on when (or if) it will happen. I know Direct TV was trying to buy that up as well but I think that was shot down - which means either InDemand is trying to push to the last second in order to secure a higher rate or MLB is having second thoughts about letting InDemand manage their Video rights.

Either way, If and When it goes up, it will open with a free preview - the Early Bird rate will be good until that Preview ends (if not longer)

Feel free to email me on that too!
