Will DirecTV's new mpeg4 HD-DVR have picture in picture?

Greetings,

I have DirecTv. A couple months back, my beloved Ultimate TV DVR finally died. (R-I-P :( ) So, to make myself feel better, I finally decided to upgrade and get DirecTV's HR10-250 high definition dvr with Tivo. While I am happy overall with the unit, I am very disappointed that it doesn't have a picture in picture feature (something that Tivo units have apparently never had). As an avid sports fan, I like to have a couple screens going at all times to follow more than just game. So, I am definitely missing PIP.

From reading posts elsewhere on this forum, it is my understanding that DirecTv's much anticipated launch of the new spaceway satellites, and the switch from mpeg2 to an mpeg4 format will soon render my HR10-250 useless. It is also my understanding that DirecTv's soon to be announced mpeg4 HD-DVR will not be supported by Tivo, but by someone else.

Sooooo, my question is this --- Does anyone know if DirecTv's soon to be released HD-DVR will support the picture in picture feature?

Thanks in advance. :)

you're asking a question about a product that does not as of yet exist. nothing whatsoever has been shown about this product, and considering the hd tivo was announced almost a full year before it's actual availability, i'd say it's not exactly "soon to be released"

OOPS. I meant to say soon to be "announced" as opposed to "released" (as I had stated earlier in my post. My bad . . . please forgive me for my mistake. )

I rarely post here, but I frequently read this board as a means for finding out any inside knowledge or rumours on upcoming technology. That's how I found out that the HR10-250 HD-DVR will soon become obsolete in the first place. DirecTV certainly made no mention of this fact to me when I purchased the DVR three months ago. If it weren't for this board, I wouldn't be the wiser.

On that note, I'll take the two week silence with respect to my question . . . along with your response today to mean that nobody knows anything about DirecTV's highly anticipated, but NOT YET near released Mpeg-4 HD-DVR.

I'm curious why you bought it then, instead of waiting for the new system to become available?

From reading posts both here and at the Satellite guys forum, it appears that DirecTV will replace the HR10-250 either for free or for a minimum cost once the switch to MPEG-4 takes place in my market (and once the new HD-DVR comes out, whenever that is). Given that the new HD-DVR is still some time away and the fact that I moved to a new home recently, I decided that it was worth the cost. I couldn't wait any longer to get HD!

Setting aside all this mpeg-4 crap for a minute, have they even actually launched any of the couple new birds that will do the mpeg4 work? Without them , the mpeg4 discussion is pointless mother hen worrying over nothing...
