There are about 5 different HD DVR/software combinations supplied around the country so it's hard to say without knowing what brand/model/software your area has, but suffice it to say that the ability to record and time-shift SD and HD is totally worth the extra ten bucks a month to me. I actually pay twice that cause i have two DVRs on the same TV. I rarely ever watch anything in real time, and since i can record shows that are broadcast at all hours of the day and night i no longer have to miss good shows because i'm at work or asleep. I could never ever go without a DVR now that i've grown accustomed to having it in my living room. I have the SA8000 & SA8000HD with Pioneer software. Most HD cable DVRs will hold roughly 20 hours of HD, give or take a few hours. And yes they do record and playback HD just as advertised. However they don't hold as many hours of programming as their marketing propaganda claims.
I just got one for my mom too (Comcast/Motorola 6412 with I-Guide). She's 70 and stays home alot and she never thought it was worth it but now that she's had it for two weeks she says she doesn't know how she ever got along without one. She absolutely loves it and now she always has shows and movies to watch on the weekends and late nights when nothing good is on.
