Studio 60 v5's. Don't go less if you aren't using a sub (for right now, anyway).

too funny, I have Studio 60 v2s in my basement.
I went to purchase Studio 10s today, but went home with another kind of candy:

Let me guess. Behind an acoustically transparent screen? That would work great. You actually want three IDENTICAL vertical front speakers. That's how movies are mixed and the front array at any cinemaplex. A horizontal center is always a compromise.

yes its a good theory.. but need to hear it.. some speakers just sound good for voices regardless of verticle or horizontal placements.. mtm centres .. just asking if anyone out there
using it.. or 3 100s up front..

cheers

I heard those yesterday! Great little speakers, surprising low end. Sounded very similar to the R300 just less bass. Nice choice!

I check Audiogon and they don't have all models unless the Signature is currently at v2.

Can anyone help me with the current versions of signatures and studio?

Also what is the matching center for the Tribute floorstanders?

Thanks.

Read several posts back. There's no center or sub with the anniversary line. Kinda disappointing.

That really sucks. So how would I expand on this setup?

So is there any plan to have a S4 again or did Paradigm just axe it from their signature line? It would be perfect for my needs.

I'm currently looking into the S2 but don't want it to be refreshed since I believe the current version was released in 2008 or 2009 I think.

My other choice would be the Studio 100s and they were released more recent I think. Can someone let me know? Please.

I want to expand in the future but want to put my money in to get the best fronts I can. Tribute would have been nice but no possible addition of the center. frown.gif

Last question, how can the S2 handle in a 2.1 setup in a 20 wide by up to 15ft in front? Considering a very good subwoofer.

Paradigm eliminated the S4 from the signature line starting with the version 3. I am guessing they weren't selling enough and they were too close between the S2 and S6. The Signature v3 line was released or announced like in Sept 2009. The Studio v5 line was announced or released September 2008. It took me 2 minutes to google both those answers wink.gif . Now your other questions are a little harder to answer because they are more based on opinion and one's ears rather than straight up facts.

As far as the S2 handing in a 2.1, I think in a 15x20, it should be fine. At one point, when I was slowing upgrading my speakers, I had the Studio 20v5 upfront as my L&R with a Rythmik FV15HP (which I consider a pretty decent sub). I often listened to 2.1 channel in a 15x17x9 and personally never felt the room wasn't being filled. I was not using an amp, just using my Onkyo 5008.

Generally, most people will agree the Signature line is superior to the Studio line. I say generally because everyone's ears are different and well I have read a few people say they like the price and sound of the studio better. Now I can definitely say, following this thread for a while, that most people will say the S2 with a good sub is better than the Studio 100. I will be buying another set of speakers soon and well I am having that debate between getting another set of studio 100s or a S2. In my mind, I love floorstanders and the fact it is a 3-way. On the other side of it, the S2's has beryllium tweeter. In the end, I will have to find a dealer in my area that actually has the S2 for a demo because I have to let my ears decide which sounds better.

Here is a couple of reviews of the S2v3

http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/bookshelf-speakers/bookshelf-speakers/paradigm-signature-s2-version-3-bookshelf-speakers-and-anthem-integrated-225-amplifier-for-the-home-theater.html

http://ultraaudio.com/twbas/twbas_20100301.htm

Now the Tribute speakers reminds me if the Signature and the Studio line decided to have a baby. They apparently designed these as 2 channel systems because of the lack of a center channel. Now as far as blending, any of the appropriate sized centers from Signature or Studio line should blend. Though, a mismatching colored center would probably bother me lol. I hope this helps.

I usually keep the grilles on, but I took this pic shortly after my upgrade in mid-2010 (w/ my SVS PB12-NSD sub)...

Hi All,

Firstly, I would like to thank everybody's input/discussions in this thread. It has provided me hours of educational reading. smile.gif

I updated my surrounds recently to Atom v7's. They were auditioned for me using a Rotel setup and sounded amazing for what they are. Huge sound from such a small speaker.

I was after new speaker stands, walked out with stands and the Atoms at a price I could not refuse. Got them home, set them up, break in time and re-adjusted all my settings. Now, I've realised my centre was sounding rather weak in comparison, particularly with Dolby Digital sources. So I went ahead and auditioned a few centres.

Ended up ordering a Center 3. It sounded best to me and should be ready for pickup in a few days.

So my setup is:
Front - Monitor 7 v6
Sub - Richter Krakatoa
Current Centre - Boston Acoustics VRC
Surrounds - Atom V7
Rear - PV-160 in wall. (want to upgrade to CS-160 when I find them on sale).
A/V - Pioneer SC-2022

Anyway, I have a quick query hoping that somebody can answer/provide an opinion on. Is the Centre 3 going to match the Monitor 7 v6 or should I have gone with the Centre 1?

Thanks in advance and thanks for reading.

1. According to Paradigm, the M7v6s "work with" the Center 1 and 3.
2. More importantly, the Center 3 sounded best to you.

IMO, you made the right choice.

I had Monitor 7 v6 before and matched it with CC290. They are made for each other. Get the 290, I bet its cheaper than the version 7 center

Studio 40 v4 vs Studio 20 V5, same price which would you guys choose? I'm hearing a lot of people prefer V4s for a bunch of reasons so I'm considering them instead. On the flip side, people seem to prefer the 20s to the 40s.

I think the v5s are more aesthetically pleasing but ultimately, the sound is more important. If its a wash then the looks will play a part.

Edit: the 40s are used and the 20s are new.

I would go with the 40's.

I agree. The only real difference is the cabinet. The v5 looks better, but sounds about the same as the v4 models.
I can't comment on the difference in sound between v4 and v5 (though I suspect it would be hard to tell them apart in a blind test), I do have a pair of Studio 20 v4 and Studio 40 v4.

I acquired the Studio 20s in December (used, of course). I was using them for front L/R. Really liked the sound. However, I don't have a dedicated HT room, and the area where my rig is set up is open to the rest of the house. The 20s seemed to struggle just a bit when listening at high volumes. Not a lot, mind you, just a bit. They can play very loud, but like I said, in that large a space, they seemed to struggle just a bit.

So, I set out to acquire a pair of Studio 40 v4. I managed to get a pair of them last month. Now I'm using them as front L/R, and the 20s are now surround L/R in my 5.1 system.

Do the 40s sound much different from the 20s? No.

The difference is that they can play louder. So now, when playing at high volumes, I no longer get the impression that the speakers are really struggling to fill the space with sound. Now, it seems like I would be well beyond what my ears can take before these speakers would break a sweat, even in such a large open space.

So, in your case, I'd say it depends on your room (or house, as the case may be) and also your listening habits. If it's a closed room of small to medium size and/or you typically only listen at low to moderate levels, then I'd say it's a wash in terms of sound quality (or quantity).

However, if you listen loud and/or you've got a lot of space to fill, then the 40s might be better suited for the job.

Thanks for the info gents, I'll take it into consideration.

Thanks for the input Gents.

I did look for a CC290 but it proved to be very difficult to find here.

Cheers.

Having said that:
- What version are the 60s? If they're v1 or v2, the Studio/CC v2 is a better match than the CC-350. If they're v3-v5, the CC-470 or CC-690.
- I'd go with bigger surrounds. If you can't swing ADP-590s, ADP-370s will work. (I ran Studio 60v4s.)

I have a vintage pair of Studio 60's v2 and recently matched the beastly CC690 as my center channel. Best move I've ever made for my home theater. It's incredible to me that a 10 year old speaker can match so perfectly to a v5 center. My Left and Right speakers are bi-amped via my Pioneer SC65 receiver. It is a seamless soundstage from Left to Center to Right. When you get up close to the speakers - - you can hear separate, discrete sounds. Move back to the listening position and it's a unified soundstage. So if you're on the fence about "matching" the center - - in my humble opinion - - you can't go wrong with CC690. It's just a superior speaker all the way around.
And...tomorrow I pickup a pair of ADP 590 v5 Dipoles to complete my theater.

Good to know that the 690 will pair up with older-version Studios. It's a great CC speaker. smile.gif

Eljaycanuck - it's really uncanny that the CC690 center works so well with my Studio 60's v.2. And thanks to you for your earlier recommendation on getting this beast of a center that effortlessly handles anything thrown at it.

I had experimented with other center channels before this - - the original Paradigm center (and I forget the exact name - it was purchased and exchanged many moons ago) - it sounded muddy and it was difficult to make out dialogue. Nothing seemed to work. I considered the CC590 but after reading all the reviews and raves about the CC690 - - I decided to take the plunge. I was able to work with a fantastic Paradigm dealer here in Colorado (Hear No Evil) - - so if there were problems, I knew I could exchange or even refund if I had to.

No worries and I couldn't be happier. Since I mounted my TV on the back wall, I was able to set the center channel about 26" off the floor - - right at ear level as you're sitting down and virtually equal in height to my Studio 60's v.2. Skfyfall is a reference Bluray disc as far as I'm concerned and while mama was away at work this past Saturday, I was able to crank it up and watch the movie in all its glory. Fantastic!!! The best sound mix I've heard in a long time. Dialogue - - even during low volume scenes was pristine. The explosions shook the house!

All in all - - a fabulous speaker by Paradigm and the ability to make a product that still works with older version product speaks volumes on the quality and timbre matching capabilities. Sorry if I sound like a fanboy but with my loss of hearing on the higher end - - the CC690 has been a godsend - - enabling me to listen at lower levels and maintain a happy household!

Best - Rico
