Is it completely replaced? Or just firmware updated? I would imagine the change to make the output go from 1080i scaling/pass-thru to 1080p is a relatively simple change since it's been in the HDMI 1.1 spec since day 1.
As off yet they can't. All it would take is a firmware upgrade to the processors with the new code to do so
How do you know that all it takes is a firmware upgrade to handle new codecs? Has any other receiver manufacturer simpy 'turned on' TrueHD or DTS-MA via a firmware upgrade? The HD-DVD players out there don't count, becuase they shipped with 2.0 TrueHD active out of the box.
I think Denon also understands that they don't want too Piss off those 4806 owners who have already spent a fair bit of $$ to buy their units, if a 1.3 upgrade is possible.
Yeah, but introducing TrueHD/DTS-MA/DD+/DTS-HRA and HDMI 1.3 are substantial enough changes to warrant a new model. And buy the time all of the above are sorted out, it will be about the time that Denon will be ready to replace the 4806 with a 4808(?) model designation.
Hey, I'm all for an upgrade option. But realistically it won't happen. The 4806->4806ci is the first time Denon has upgraded a 48xx series receiver. All previous updates have been for the 58xx line. And Denon has never promised us such an improvement path. And imagine how much they'd charge! To turn on a few features going to from 4806 to 4806ci is $500! Adding TrueHD/DTS-MA/DD+/HDMI 1.3, you'd think they'd want $1500+!
