I am new to the AVS Forum and to HD. I pretty much only get on forums when I need info or have an "ax to grind". This forum has been a great source of info. and I have only explored an extremely small part of it!
I bought an L32 a few week ago at Sam's. Maybe I'm color blind, but I haven't noticed a problem with the whites. It seems like the picture is very good. (I haven't spent much time looking at hi-res TVs, it looks better than my 1985 RCA). The only hi-res source I have is my DVD player, and I love it!
However, this TV does have a problem with MTS (stereo) sound from the NTSC tuner. Most of you guys have STB's or HD tuners, so this may not be a big deal, but it irks me because after spending the $$$, I went from using my VCR for a tuner, to using my VCR for a tuner. I took the unit back and exchanged it, only to find that the second unit had the same problem. Also, I was getting some tires put on my car, and borrowed an antenna and headphones; it was a bit noisy in the store, but it seemed as if the demo unit also had the same problem.
The problem is that the amplitude of the "L-R" information (which is what turns mono into stereo) fluctuates wildly, creating a very distorted sound with stereo cable or OTA sources.
I'm not sure whether this is a bad design or a production problem. After many e-mails and a phone conversation, all I've gotten from VINC tech support is a case number. I even contacted Sam's to tell them what I found, but haven't heard much from them either.
I also had the problem that others had with the TV not recognizing stereo channels. I don't remember any smell.
Here's a weird one: I did have a problem with the remotes interacting between the L32 and an APEX DVD player. I wasn't paying attention, but I think my APEX remote was able to connect the audio output of the TV to a different internal source on the first unit before I took it back. The audio output would not adjust with the volume setting, and in some cases with PIP, would have a different source from the speaker audio.
All that said, I still like the L32 and will keep it. I thought I would solve the MTS problem by getting a Westinghouse 32 in from BB. Its lack of functionality really made me appreciate the L32 (I could write multiple K words on the W, but I'll spare you). It went back quickly!
Happy new year!
