Welcome to Madden NFL 06 for the Xbox 360.

With Microsoft recently announcing a launch date of November 22 we can now start showing off more of the product we have been working on over the past year or so. The Xbox 360 version of Madden NFL 06 is really starting to come together and I’m very excited about it. To me, the game really is looking, playing and feeling "next gen." Back in April we showed you some video of what we thought this game could be like and with each day of development that passes, I am more and more encouraged that we will be able to meet or exceed that target.

We still have several weeks left in development, so what we are releasing now not final yet; but I do want to confirm that all screens are captured from the game engine and not pre-rendered. You will see this level of quality and more in the final product. As things like player sizes/builds and different weather/lighting conditions become fully tuned you will begin to see these great graphics come to life in all situations. We'll soon see what the Giants at Eagles at night, in the snow looks like in real-time in this new engine and can't wait to share that with you. Of course, Madden isn't just about great graphics; we will deliver a many innovations in game play with an animation system driven by over three times the number of animations as previous versions of Madden. We're also planning on bringing franchise mode to the Xbox 360 with a whole new way to access information that franchise players will really enjoy.

They only let me share two screens this week, so we picked two that both show off the detail of this game, but in different ways. The first is a close-up of Saints QB Aaron Brooks focusing down field. We took this shot a ultra high resolution, so I hope that makes it out to you, if it does, you will notice stubble on the players’ faces and even reflection in the player eyes. Without doubt, the player faces are the most faithful reproductions we’ve ever done. Additionally the detail on essentials like the football and helmets are incredible. There are more polys in our next gen helmet than there were in the complete player from previous versions of Madden. Each NFL team helmet has the accurate paint style (notice the metallic paint of the Saints), and we have exact models of all the various helmet styles and facemask types worn in the NFL. The football is detailed down to the last pimple on the ball, and it has its own reflective properties.

In the second screen of Manning and Harrison at the Bengals, we show even more detail in the player uniforms, helmets and faces. Check out the different helmets on the Colts teammates, as well as the reflection on this sunny day scene. You also get a glimpse of our full 3-D crowd who are individually placed in each individual seat in the stadium accurately. We probably wouldn't normally show a screen shot of the back of a player's head, but this one caught my eye and felt very realistic.

In game, the players come alive with facial animation and NFL Films on-field audio, which adds a whole new level of authenticity to the game.

You will soon be seeing a lot more screens and videos as we get ready to start football season again in November. Also, be sure to check out the November issue (on sale October 4th) of EGM, which has the first detailed information and impressions of the game from their visit to our studios several weeks ago.

very nice, but it still doesn't look like in game shots...more like cut scenes or instant replay. guess we'll have to wait and see. and this is really picky, but why do all the fans have their hands up in the air when he hasn't even thrown the ball yet?
of course they're cut scenes but they look damn good...

I thought cutscenes are somewhat indicative of what the game engine will look like, just closer and with more detail. I am very excited. Full polygon crowds! Woohoo!

yea, madden cutscenes are basically zoomed in, different angles of the game, between plays.

Exactly. I always wonder why people talk about cutscenes for Madden because there aren't any. Everything is in-game and basically using a replay style system to give you different angles of stuff going on in the field in real time.

that's true, but during normal gameplay everything is miniaturized and there usually isn't as much detail in the player models, etc. hopefully this time around things will be different.

Wouldn't this prevent a full view of the field and prevent the QB from seeing the WRs? The models will be the same, just zoomed out, so it will look fairly good, but never going to be as good as it is zoomed up to replay view.

Now that we got that obligatory BS out of the way...

I liked the 2K series, but it sure had some damnably annoying gameplay quirks and glitches that plagued the entire series.

I have resigned myself to the fact that this will be the same exact Madden game in 720p. Nothing more.

I, for one, have felt that the NCAA Football series has been better and more fun for several years. I'm sorry it's not getting the HD lovin'. Even now, I find that I'm playing it far more than I do Madden.

For the last couple of years or so, I find that Madden just doesn't keep my interest for very long ,whereas NCAA usually does.

I'm really starting to hope that some of the NON NFL games from other companies bring me something new, fresh, and exciting, because this year's Madden really is a step backwards from 2005 in some respects. The new features they added either are irrelevant, or simply suck and have to be turned off anyways. (The QB cone vision? Is anyone actually using that?)

I have Madden 2006 for PC and play it at the max res 1600x1200 and it looks nothing like the screenshots running at 1280x720. First of all the crowd is not polygon on the PC version while it is on the 360. That's impressive in itself. Second, the level of detail on the player is nowhere near the screenshots.

I'm pretty confident that graphics wise, it's is leagues over the current Madden. Can't comment on the gameplay.

One of the reasons I respect PC Gamer Magazine a lot is for what they did in their latest issue.

They gave Madden 2006 on the PC a 65/100 percent ratings and listed the litany of flaws it has, being forced to pay EA extra to play it online (we all had better take notice of this), and the complete lack of originality or improvement over 2005.

Even though I have the game on the Xbox, I couldn't agree with their review more.

Given all of the supposed power of the 360, I'm pretty dissapointed in those shots. Especially considering the little movie EA made many months ago...............

And when did Marvin Harrison put on all of that muscle?? The guy is skinny, not stocky like in the pic!

I expect this game to look a little better then the PC version, the reason being better is their hardware target will be a bit higher then their target PC owners hardware. Textures a noticeable notch higher and a bit more happening in the backgrounds. I bet the "Madden view" looks pretty similar. Yes this is nothing like those movies, but I knew that was BS.

This system is shaping up to be a high-end PC imo without the mouse, so we already know what a lot of this will look like, we'll get higher texturing and a little more headroom for background animations and physics/AI in general. Some PC games will still look better on the high high end, running at 1600x1200 with everything on with ultra-high textures. Not bashing, I'd love a closed console looking like a top pc, but the lack of M, is killing me but I try to look past that, I try.

PC Gamer said the graphics were amazing for the PC version. They certainly gave it due props on that count, but basically trashed it in every other category.

The PC is always going to win that race, in the end. ;)

^ We were hoping it wouldn't be winning before the console actually ships or at least the 260 would take us straight to the top-o-line pc at release, when everything is considered (like hardware to program for) for $400. We are supposed to get value in consoles right? The PC Madden has been looking good for year’s imo, as I have them. I'm happy with it, but there will be a lot of people though expecting much more then that. It's basically a cleaner/sharper version of the consoles. I figured the screenies were lacking because this isn't the big wow some would like to see.
