Ok, so who's tv is this? I bet it's someone watching this thread.
if they got $1700 bucks for that it'd be a miracle. I just called Sony last Tuesday, as my OB started showing heavy signs of overheating again. Purple screen watching hockey. They said the same thing that they are no longer doing repairs, which is fine. I called to take advantage of the replacement program, ended up getting the XBR9 and cant wait for it to come in. I shipped out my sticker on Tuesday afternoon, and got confirmation Friday that the tv will be shipping in the next two weeks.

I have to say i'm happy with the replacement offer, as at this point i was looking at spending far more just to replace this tv. I've had my xbr1 for 4 years now, and its really sad how great the pic is still, with the exception of the purple coloring. I've had 2 OB replacements, its just too bad Sony never figured out how to get these bad boys going. The pic imo was still one of the best i've seen.

Yes, 1700 is quite high in my opinion. I had mine out there for half that with a brand new OB, new bulb, and brand new spare bulb. I didn't get a single hit, though it was only out there for a few days before I pulled it.

Glad to hear you took the offer and are excited about it. Keep us updated on how it goes. I decided to keep my XBR1 for now and opted for the 46V5100. Haven't received the tv yet, it's been about a week.

Hi ALL,

I've been following this thread since it was created by Bombthroat back in Sept 2005, and I must have read all 20,000+ posts. I knew people were already getting the green blob but I was so blown away with its picture (no other TV at the time could beat it, in my opinion) that I went ahead and bought it in Nov 2005. Because of the pre-knowledge of the green blob I also bought the Best Buy EW for four years, even though I usually don't get EWs. Since then I've had the tuner replaced (Q-Module) and two OBs replaced, at no charge on the BB EW.

A few months ago I started to notice the return of the green blob - certainly not as bad as before but definitely there. My EW ends on 11/16/09 so I called BB last week and I asked for and got the same friendly tech that had come for the other 3 service calls. I showed him the Memory Stick screen and some selected scenes from a B&W DVD and he admitted that the green blob was there and certified the need for a forth repair. This triggers the No-Lemon clause of the EW and within a day or two I got a confirmation number authorizing the exchange.

Best Buy is often talked about negatively but I must say I had an extremely successful day with them today. To make a long story short I am getting a new Pioneer PRO-151FD Elite 60" plasma and a new EW for an extremely low upgrade price. The new TV will be delivered on Wed and they will also pick up the old TV. When I was auditioning the PRO-151FD in their Magnolia area it was playing the Transformers II Blu Ray, and I don't think I have ever seen a sharper image with more depth and contrast than it had. I was mesmorized (sp?) !!!!

Anyway, the SXRD was the best in its day and I have enjoyed having it, but I'm real excited about the Elite and the picture it delivers.

GOOD LUCK to everyone!!

Gerry

As promised here is a quick guide on removing the optical block. The new 46V5100 arrived today and I will use it until my r60xbr1's OB is fixed by Tri State Module. The only tool you need is a phillips screwdriver, preferably with a magnetic tip.

1. Take the door and bulb out by removing the screw.

2. Take the grey outer panel off by removing the 9 screws.

3. Slide the power cord off its slot.

4. Remove the grey inner panel which is held on by 5 screws (2 small screws next to HDMI inputs, 1 small screw on the top right, and 2 long screws on the bottom right).

5. Remove the 5 screws holding the grounding straps for the OB on.

6. Remove the connector cover which is held on by 2 screws.
EDIT: Thanks to Gunny1963, he pointed out that there are 3 screws in this step. There is one in the bottom right that cannot be seen in my picture below. I must have put this screw somewhere else when I was putting my television back together the first time...

7. Remove the three connectors, the top left connector has a locking tab that must be pushed in before it can be removed.

8. Remove the right side support bar held on by 2 screws.

9. Remove the screw above the antenna/cable inputs.

10. The electronics board can be slid backwards now a couple inches by pulling up on the 2 tabs which are on the bottom right. This will allow you to reach in on the right side and disconnect the ballast power connector.

11. Disconnect the 3 connectors on the right side.

12. Disconnect the OB fan connector.

13. This area may look different since I had previously removed the OB and didn't put the connectors back the way they were from the factory. There are a total of 7 that must be disconnected before the electronics board can be slid out of the television. There are two sets of connectors with white/grey wires. Label one set with electrical tape so you don't get them mixed up.

14. Slide the electronics board out of the television. Here it is on the floor.

15. Remove the left side support bar which is held on by 2 screws.

16. Remove the fan held on by 2 screws.

17. Remove the ballast by undoing the wire loop on the left side, disconnecting the connectors, and compressing the two tabs on top in order to slide the board out towards you.

18. Remove the black fan shroud held on by 1 screw on the top right and 2 screws on the bottom left.

19. Remove the left inner support bar held on by 1 screw.

20. Remove the screw in the center of the lamp connector and slide it along with the harness and ballast out of the television.

21. Remove the inner gray panel held on by 5 screws and pulling up on the two tabs on the bottom.

22. Remove half of the lamp assembly bracket by pulling/pushing on the tab at the top and pulling it straight out.

23. Remove the front trim by removing the screw on the left and pulling the trim out towards the front.

24. Remove the 4 screws holding the OB in from the front of the television.

25. Slide the OB out towards the back.

All the pieces minus the large electronics board.

Some misc. pics of the OB.

Having done this twice now, if anyone has any questions I would be more than happy to do my best at answering them.

Lucky dog! Congrats. I made the mistake of procrastinating both times I needed to have my set fixed. Therefore my warranty will run out (11/11/09) before I hit the 4 fix maximum. Oh well. Nice to hear it actually works. I'm curious to know how much you had to pay for the plasma. PM me if you don't mind.

Please do me a favor and edit your post so you don't quote all my pics. It makes the page like a mile tall...

I SEE IT MY TV HAS SO MUCH DUST I THINK I SHOULD TAKE IT APART AND CLEAN IT. I JUST REPLACED THE BIG FAN. DO YOU RUN YOUR TV ON HIGH ALITUDE SO THE FANS RUN FASTER? SHOULD I REPLACE THAT FAN?

Did any one see that sony drop there pants on the xbr 9 it is now only 1999.00.(WAS 2499 LAST WEEK) So I wonder if my offer for 1325.00 went down? If not i'm going to bitch and ask for the 8 it's a way better tv. Anybody call sony yet about this? THEY MUST BE SITTING ON A BUNCH OF 9'S. OR I'LL EVEN TAKE A 10 AT A GOOD DEAL BUT THE 8 IS THE BEST PICTURE FOR SURE. PLUS THEY GIVE YOU A BLU-RAY AND SOUND BAR FOR 1999. AS WELL.

I've read running the tv in "high altitude" and "power reduced" helps the OB issues but I dunno. That's what I plan on doing when I get my OB back from repair.

It's been stated multiple times before including from me, Sony is only offering the three televisions in the "special program". The xbr8 is not one of them. I did get them to offer me the 55V5100 but the discount was nowhere near what they offered on the original choices. Good luck.

Looks like the 52XBR9 is backordered at the moment.

"Thank you for contacting the Sony Exchange Dept.,

Unfortunately your order is currently on backorder. Sony is working very hard to try and resolve this situation. We've had an overwhelming response to our replacement offers and a high response to our current models in the retail market. The model you have selected is a very popular model, and it is unfortunate that we don't have it available to ship out immediately. We are anticipating it to ship within the next 2 weeks; however this is only an estimate. We truly appreciate your business and your patience."

For reference, Sony received the sticker from my XBR1 on monday, Oct 19th.
The above email arrived Thursday, Oct 29th

Question: I wasn't even thinking about doing this, but now I am. My 4 year EW from Best Buy was up October 31st. I have until November 13th to purchase a 1,2 or 3 year EW as a one time offer. Sony replaced my OB in May and so far, so good. Is it worth the extra money for insurance on this set, or should I just move on if it goes south? Thanks!

How did Best Buy offer you the EW? Did you have to contact them? Mine is up Nov. 11th. I'm not sure if I'd do it or not though. Guess it would depend on price.

I called them...it's a one time shot. $168 for one year, $330-ish for two. and $398 for three years.

BB sent me something in the mail from the Geek Squad. Mine is up 11/28 and I got the notice about 2 weeks ago, so if you have not heard from them, I would call.
Thanks for the reply, both of you. Now that I'm thinking about it, I probably can't even get the additional EW since I've removed the serial number sticker.

aloha, i've 50XBR1 that i've had 3 optical blocks & 2 asu/dsu boards & 2 Q-box replaced so far by Sony Hawaii. I bought extended warranty from Sony after purchase. Just called sony US to see about purchase option for xbr9- Was informed that the program does not apply to Hawaii- i should call Sony HI for repair but no replacement program exists. Another price of living in paradise.

It is worth the money because you know you will use the coverage. You may get a replacement if parts become unavailable or you hit a fourth repair. Then you really save.

Man this thread moves fast!!!!!!!!

Our XBR9 looks great. Love all of the connections and they have so many presets for the specific input types I was in heaven. My wife loves it so I love it.

Adrian?????????? You rock!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks bro. I'm gonna rip mine apart very soon.

Contemplating getting a new OB or getting it fixed. Probably gonna get a new one. Won't put near the time on it that my wife did so hopefully it'll last for a very long time.

ALWAYS clean the dust out of your sets!!!!! It's already opened. Why not make it look nice? Plus you'd be surprised what dust can do to electronics. I clean every computer I open up. Overheating sucks fellas! And go clean out the back of your fridge while you're in a cleaning mood. My compressor started making a noise and I realized dust had covered all of the vent holes. She purrs now!

ball3r, sorry to hear you aren't getting this 52". It's pretty neat actually but I fully understand your reasoning. Keep the SXRD, don't abuse it and get a smaller one. Good idea.

I was never made aware of the optical block issue until my TV had the problem (just started it Sunday)

I called SOny and all they will do is make me spend $900 on a new TV. They say b/c their extended warranty on this known issue was up in June, they won't help me.

I don't have $900 to spend on a new TV, but even if I did that is not how you take care of customers.

Has anyone else had their's fixed since June? If so, what did you do to get results?

Sony has told a number of folks on here recently that they are no longer fixing these sets. They only offer the discounted price on a different tv. May I ask which TV they offered you for 900?
Recently I have noticed that the 60XBR1 will go black for 1 second, and then the on screen TV input status bar will appear for a few seconds (as if someone has pressed the TV/Video Input button). Occurs while watching D* on Input 5 (component cable). Usually happens once after an hour or two. Has anyone observed this with their set or have an idea why this is happening?

I ended up getting a 3 year EW renewal from Best Buy...I am now good on this television through November 2012. I forget that other things can go out on a 4 year old television besides the OB. By then I will be ready to move on...

Good move! You may end up with a replacement if it craps out on ya.

That's what I'm betting on...And talking to people at Best Buy, they have about "had it up to here" replacing OBs on this set...so it only makes sense. And if it dies past the next three years, then it will be time to move on. Just having the peace of mind for the next 3 years was worth it to me.

I bet they wish they never sold any sxrd tv's. By law they have to offer the extended warrenty for the sxrd because they have offer it on all or none. So no matter how much money they lose they have to offer the coverage.

Looks like the sxrd tv's have been a major bust for Sony, the consumer, and the retailers.
