If you've never taken it apart before, the XBR2 service manual is pretty good as a starting point, it even has real photographs. If you google search "KDS-R60XBR2 service manual download" you should find a free one in the first page or so of results. Read it through thoroughly before you do anything. Take pictures and lots of notes as you go along. Put different kinds of screws in an egg carton, number the compartments, make notes on the numbers and where they went.

I have a Sony Grand Wega KDS-R60XBR1 SXRD. Some time ago I went into the service menu (can't even remember why I was so dumb to do that - I think I was looking at resetting something related to the fan or some other non-sense like that found somewhere in the net when looking for a fix to a 4x blinking red power light), and I apparently inadvertently changed something in there that I shouldn't have... I believe I must have changed something because afterwards my PS3 (first generation / fat model) was no longer dispalying on my R60XBR1. Before messing with the service menu it worked, afterwards it didn't. I bought a slim PS3 and that one does work. I know, I know, I know you're going to say something is wrong on the fat PS3... please believe me, it isn't. The fat PS3 is happily working on my daughters cheapo Walmart 2010 LG LCD.
Another thing I noticed after messing around in there (although this I can not ascertain wasn't there before I went into the service menu) was a fluctuation in the poicture from a some sort of dithering in the image to no-dithering (back and forth in about 3-4 seconds interval).
Has anyone come across any of those 2 issues, and does anyone here know how I might go about fixing them?
Alternatively, is there a way to return to the service menu original factory presets? I think those changes are saved in a static memory (EPROM?), so I don't know if the standard factory reset will revert my changes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is an interesting one.

You were probably in there to reset the lamp hour counter, which is a very straight forward procedure.

I used to experiment quite extensively within the service menu of my 50xbr1. There is a color decoding variation selector under the "PANEL" submenu that would cause similar image problems. However, did you actually tinker with any settings under "WEM"? I recall certain gamma parameters that would cause random dithering and color errors there as well.

The PS3 issue is bizarre. Regardless that you have the console functioning on another TV, I would do a video reset on the PS3. Unplug the xbr1 for at least 5 minutes before trying again. There is nothing that I can recall within the SM that can selectively disable a source device.

I don't believe that the factory reset does anything accept for clearing user menu settings + the channel list. Your stuck with any SM changes that were made.

The Sony has been collecting dust for quite some time now. I could fire it up again in order to precisely guide you if need be. Just give another shout out if help is still needed.

Happy to see that your set is still going strong. Been feeling nostalgic about mine lately. Thinking of pulling it out of storage.

Maybe I'll get around to that high intensity LED replacement experiment after all. I'm convinced that it will not only work, but calibrate to either D65 or D75 nicely.

I was hoping that you guys could assist me with an issue I am having. About 2 months ago I got the red flashing light indicating that my lamp had reached the end of it's life. I purchased a new lamp and installed it, the TV came on fine however the picture was much dimmer even when I turned up the brightness and went to Dynamic picture setting. I basically just learned to live with the dimmer picture, one month after use on the new bulb the picture went out, there was and still is not any indicator light flashing that the lamp needed replaced (I have a solid green power light, no flashing red at all). I assumed that I received a faulty lamp, I ordered another lamp. Yesterday my new lamp arrived, I installed the new lamp and still no picture. I do have sound but no picture at all. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated! The set I have is Sony SXRD kds-r60xbr1

Hi, welcome to AVS. It's likely the ballast board part# 1-468-936-12
post #23857 of 23978
Thanks for the speedy reply and thank you! I will look into that.

So for a guy that knows very little about replacing parts on a TV how difficult would it be for me to try and fix this?
It is not overly difficult, but you have to be careful and observant in there. Get yourself a copy of the service manual. It contains clear illustrations and diagrams of how everything fits together.

Again thank you! I am leaning towards taking Sony's offer to sell me the HXSF750 for $950 and making this a side project.

Is the "I have a defective Sony TV"/"Sony listens" replacement deal still running? I thought it ended a while back.

I guess so......I figured I was SOL but I emailed Sony they created a file with my issues and gave me the offer on Friday. The more research I have done on the 55" HXSF750 the more impressed I am.

Cool! Good for you and kudos to Sony.

You will really like the new set. There are differences between the new and the old, some subtle, some obvious. One major factor that I've really enjoyed is not having to worry about leaving the TV on for the sake of burning out the lamp. Colors on my 60XBR1 seemed slightly richer but the new Sony is easier to callibrate and get spot on.

Enjoy your new TV.smile.gif

Ok I have a 60XBR1, my tv won't come on. all I am getting is the standby green light blinking non stop, what is going on? Thanks.
Ok the red lamp light comes on after the continuous green light, I will order bulb.
I purchased a 50XBR1 when they first came out and I still love it. The green light started flashing last night, plus the picture has been getting dimmer lately. It is time for a new bulb. I used the search function on this site to try and find a retailer and most of results were posts from 2009 and hardly any of those retailers still sell them. I tried Amazon and eBay, but I want to avoid eBay. I found this retailer:

http://www.dlplampsource.com/tv/sony-tv-replacement-lamps/kdsr50xbr1/xl-5100-television-replacement-lamp.html

But, they are selling the Osram bulbs. From what I gather, I want to avoid Osram bulbs, correct? Who is reputable online dealer that sells the bulbs and housing for this TV? Any help in finding a bulb with housing would be very much appreciated!

I've had good experiences with B&H Photo in New York.
The reviews on B&H for the replacement lamp are overall good, but the negative ones are pretty negative and suggest that some of the units that are being shipped aren't always OEM. Anyone offer any comments? $200 is the most of ever seen these replacement XL5100 assemblies go for, there are sellers on Amazon offering replacement units for $35-$100. Of course not all of those are OEM's.

I remember seeing posts in this thread with good things being said about River Valley Electronics. I just checked their site and they have the XL5100 for $75, although it's only the Osram bulb, they used to offer the Philips bulb option too.

If anyone has a reliable source for the XL5100 with Philips bulb, I'm also interested.

Hate to hear about River Valley Electronics only having the non OEM's now. mad.gif
I bought my last two there and was well satisfied with the Philip's and their quick shipping in my case. Mine is getting a bit dim...... hope to locate another dealer myself.

I've had good results from Dynamic Lamps on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/shops/dynamiclamps

Another poster here spoke very highly of Nio on eBay and they have high ratings: http://stores.ebay.com/neilampsandelectronics

In both cases you will find they sell clearly advertised-as-such Philips lamps, or Osram, as well as the cheaper Chinese knockoffs. That is okay as long as they are clear with you what item you are getting and they ship that item.

In dealing with other sellers, beware of the term 'OEM equivalent', which does NOT mean 'OEM'. OEM-equivalent is a wishy-washy meaningless term. Another clue is the price, you will not get a genuine Philips or Osram bare lamp for less than $50.

Bare lamps might come with the pigtails and connector, or not. If the connector in your housing is in bad shape you should go for the housing + lamp.

Excellent info, thanks.
Thanks for the info. One finally showed up at Tri-State as In Stock so I placed my order. Hoping to return the glorious picture to my 60". Don't know why I love this TV so much but I just can't seem to part with it.

Shockandawe,

What model did you email Sony on? I have been told that I am out of luck for KDSR-50 and that the program ended a few months back. So if you met with success I am curious what you told them if you have the same model.

I am pretty sure my issue wasn't the color block, but here is the email I sent to Sony; Hello, I was hoping that you could assist me with an issue I am having. They assigned me a code and had me call in. The rep that I spoke with treated me as if I had the color block (she asked for me to mail in a picture of the screen). Hope this helps! My new panel (55' HX750) is phenomenal!

If youre still looking for a bulb, I have one from my 60", it has about 1,000 hours on it. Sure of the brand off hand, it was a replacement from Best Buy when they came out to replace the OB the first time....
Thanks for the replies! So, I take it Osram bulbs are no good? I am going to email Nio and Dynamic Lamps and see about getting the Philips one with the housing.
A quick update. I contacted both Niosales and Dynamic Lamps and asked both if they have the Philips bulb with housing. Nio responded and pointed me to this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/170561456776?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D170561456776%26_rdc%3D1

It appears that they do have the Phillips lamp with housing. I purchased it. It looks like the right one! Thanks ChuckF. and everybody else who commented.
