Owners Tweaks & Settings Sony KDSR-50/60XBR1 - Page 50

The post was made on 1/29/07 by brenthenry. It's on the previous page, I believe. My fingers are crossed that the new OB will have greater longevity than the previous one. I don't know what these things cost, not to mention installation, if it goes south after the warranty expires. I suspect it is not cheap.

I read somewhere on this forum that Sony has extented their warranty for a replacement OB until the end of 2008.

Sears recently replaced my OB and lamp under my EW (no current cost to me). They gave me an invoice that showed it would have cost $2300 without the EW. That's inflated because they don't show the $750 they get back for the core and they charged $350 for the lamp.

You may want to cross more than just your fingers. Some people, myself included, are noticing problems right away with their 'new' OB's. Some are willing to live with their slightly flawed picture for now. I dont think we should let Sony off the hook that easily. IMO, if your picture does not look like it did when you brought the set home, call Sony back and have them make it right. Otherwise Sony will believe the new parts they have shipping out to the defective ones are actually good.

I'm new to these forums... and read through several pages of posts, but It still isn't clear to me what could be wrong with my TV (KDSR60XBR1). The first thing that I had notice was that when watching a 4:3 signal when I would switch to any widescreen format there would be a yellow line that started near the bottom right and moved (getting slimmer toward the top)... eventually I notice a more dramatic yellowing in the upper center of the screen area that has now pretty much encompassed the entire screen. I've fiddled with all of the settings (in Pro mode) but can't get the yellow to go away. I was going to try replacing the bulb, but all of the discussion about the optical block replacement makes me think that could be the problem. Any opinions if I'm in the "need a new OB club?"

The yellowing you describe (not the line) would appear to be the optical block. Fortunately (you may already know this), sony has offered to repair optical blocks (labor and parts) until october '08 for the XBR1 owners, regardless of purchase date. I'd get sony going on replacing it.

I started this thread a long time ago and had one of the first 60" XBR1 sets shipped to the US. The funny things is that my set is rock solid with a beautiful picture and I can't detect any discoloring in B/W, from the memory stick screen , etc. I do have a little green on startup but then it quickly goes away. I'm wondering if there was a large batch of bad OB installed or if there is another issues that would only effect certain sets. I'm also woriied that it may show up one day.

How many hours do you have on your set? I had around 5,000 hours on my lamp before I noticed the "blob". It got progressively worse and I got a new OB at 7,200 hours.

Unless you use your set more than most, you don't have 5,000 hours.

I got my set on 10-08-05. I watch about 6 hours a day of TV. Yeah I know - I was told I'd go blind from other negative activities too but.... So that would be around 3000 hours of bulb usage. I hope you're wrong about my set developig problems. Did they try replacing the bulb before doing the OB install? What in the OB would degrade from usage? Did the tech say? Also, do you ever turn off your set (:

I changed bulbs the same time as the OB. We're retired and the set is turned on around 10 in the morning and off around midnight. It normally just runs in the background on a news channel during the day. If we walk through the family room and something catches our attention, we stop and watch it.

Has anyone talked to a tech that could explain what fails on these OB's?

I have to 50xbr1 and am looking for some user friendly adjustments/tweaks I could make to get the most out of this TV, I did some minor tweaks but Iam by no means electronic savy and have read a couple extremely advanced tweaks for this and dont want to mess with all that if possible. I prefer viewing this tv in vivid/cooler colors over the warm and would like to tweak the clarity/sharpness if possible. Again please remeber Iam a newbie. Thanks

Got my 60" SXRD back a couple of days ago... Hillems Coast TV came and picked up the TV last Thursday... performed the repair and returned it on Tuesday. TV looks like it used to when it was brand new. Hopefully it will stay that way. Has anyone been keeping track of the number of times the blob has returned? Any ideas on longevity of repair satisfaction?

If you read the owner's thread, you will see many instances of where the blobs have returned.

Normally, Sony has been replacing the sets after one or two replacements have "gone bad".

Quick question...
To calibrate your tv can i just go by some of the recommended settings posted on here. Or... do i have to wait and first buy a DVD, like AVIA, and then do everything?

Proper calibration must be unique to a specific set. Using the "settings" from another set may make you picture better; or they may make it worse. If you could use one set of numbers on all sets to obtain the optimal picture; don't you think that the factory would use those numbers?

Bottom line: Your set must be individually calibrated if you want to be sure of an improved picture. How good, depends upon the tools and skills of the calibrator. Least improvement is "Joe Sixpack" looking at the picture and adjusting user controls. Next in line is Joe Sixpack using Avia or DVE. Next improvement is doing some reading/studying and then using AVia/DVE. Next improvement is probably using DIY techniques/equipment (e.g., Spyder TV Pro) discussed on the calibration forum. Best possible picture requires one of the skilled professional doing the full ISF process.

Agreed.

Lighting in your room, position of the set relevant to the walls and ceiling, color of the walls and ceiling and flooring, all have an impact. That, plus the OBs tend to all be a little sensitive, I doubt any two are 100% alike.

Well worth the price of the pro calibration IMHO.

I know what you are feeling. I too switched from a 50XBR1 to a 60XBR2. I did so after only 1 OB switch, though. This has to be the most depressing forum due to all the green-blob issues. People are chumps if they feel satisfied with the XBR1. So long suckers, come visit in the XBR2 forum. He He.

Real class act! I'm sure that the XBR2 thread will be thrilled with your valuable input.

A couple years ago, I downloaded (from source currently unknown) a 20-30 page set of instructions for DVE.

Did a quick "google" today for "DVE Instructions" and there are many sources. One below has good but brief instructions for the basic calibration.
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/V...libration.html
Suggest you also check more of the google sources. I would also go to the AVS calibration forum and do a search for DVE instructions.

Good luck.

Okay, so my SXRD 50" OB went kaflooey (yellow tinge, everyone looking jaundiced), and I got Sony to send over a warranty replacement with an installer.

Now it's up and running with a new OB, and all my Greens are Blue - grass, most noticeably, on MLB, Football, and nature programming.

I've re-instated my previous ISF caliration settings, no good. I've tried every setting on this thread, no change.

Now what? I dropped $3500 on this TV in October 2005, and everything was great until the yellow tinge of death last month. I thought the OB replacement would "cure all ills", but no.

WTF? Now what?

From what I can tell after playing with settings all night is that my greens are blue and my blues are green. Any ideas?

Video 7, HDMI input from SA 8300HD STB/CableVision New Jersey. ISF calibrated settings from before the OB was replaced, as follows (those not listed are at Sony defaults for Video 7):

Pro mode, temperature Neutral, power saving off.

Picture 48
Brightness 27
Color 27
Hue R1
Sharpness 28

White Balance (I have only listed the ones that changed):

B-Gain -17
R-Bias +2
B-Bias +1
