Ya do have to admit - that static picture has the best PQ ever in regard to our CBS channel !

* Ever since they ripped the quality out for all the SD sub-channels.

Agreed. I've been watching it all night and no macroblocking mess like normal. Also, not a single snipe or twitter hash tag. Unfortunately the plot seems to be going nowhere.

Verizon showed up today to make my connection. I am totally new to Fios and to this Cisco DVR - I can barely find any mention of it in any tech forums.

Does anyone have any experience with this DVR? The remotes are absolutely impossible to use. It goes through periods (30 seconds) where no key press at all is processed. When it is working it is extremely sensitive to the direction of the remote.

This isn't like the Motorola remote issues where commands pile up and then are processed all at once, the commands are not even being acknowledged (light blinks) by the DVR.

I have tried several remotes and it is the same with them all.

If this is the nature of this DVR it is a definite deal killer, it is unusable.

Thanks.

Everytime I hear my neighbors complain about their FiOS and Comcast DVRs, it further reinforces my use of TiVos.

Im actually getting pix now on my thumbnail chapters as opposed to just the time stamp intervals with no pix.

This is strange. I have all my stuff scattered all over the floor, getting the new system setup, an entire rework. The ST30 was running its slides and casting a glare on the DVR (nighttime). I moved the DVR back a bit so the IR window was back a bit and protected from the glare of the TV and it started working much better.

It was misbehaving when even non-red colors were up, I don't know what frequencies could be interfering.

When I get everything in its proper place I will revisit this post.

It could be IR interference from your television. Sometimes putting a post-it over the IR sensor on the DVR helps. Google IR interference for more info.

The TiVo is just a watered down Media Center PC.

Windows 7 Media Center + CableCARD tuners > Tivo > crappy cable company STBs

Still no CBS in Harrisburg, and now they've completely removed CBS from the program guide....not even a selectable channel now.

This is ridiculous.

This is ridiculous.

This is just another "retransmission consent dispute". Until the 1992 Cable Act is changed expect more blackouts.

This is a good article on the issue:

I just had the FiOS installed a few weeks ago and also received the Cisco boxes. I don't have quite as many problems as you do but the boxes definitely have more "bugs" than my previous DirecTV DVR. The menus are a lot faster than the DTV DVR but I've also had a few lock-ups here and there where it had to restart itself. This has only happened once or twice in the past 2-3 weeks so I'm not overly concerned. The remote definitely has to be pointed directly at the box for it to work, which is kind of annoying.

When it happens to me, I can be right at the box and it doesn't work.

I am having the same issue with the STB's in different parts of the house. I have to push the box back into the depths of the cabinet in which it sits for the IR to function reliably, this is at night too.

We're back on! We only missed all the CBS playoff games but they got their dispute worked out apparently.

I find that since the new software update on the fios boxes SD channels look much better! (currently not in stretch mode) everything looks right and isn't blurry. Nice!

A definite effect with the plasma on, just the menu backgrounds are enough to interfere, not even running the slideshow.

The other STB's were relatively sheltered from obvious IR frequencies, maybe an incandescent was an issue, I'll play with it some more.

New to the Fios firmware and quirks.....

Set up my series, there were the inevitable conflicts. One got booted due to priority, a weekly show with tons of repeats, and it did not schedule a pick up of the missed episode at some other time. Wow, that is weak.

Is there a setting to correct this? I can't seem to find anything.

Thanks.

There are repeaters that plug in to your stb and be positioned away from the plasma signal.

You can adjust the priority of shows as well as whether repeats are allowed. You can also toggle "first run only" but I don't use this because the guide is notorious for being wrong on this one. Look in the DVR settings for the show priorities and the "modify series" option for each series and change to "any time" instead of "this time slot" only. The wording may be different, i'm going off memory here.

I too get macroblocking on fast moving scenes with Fios. I also got it with comcast as well. It does not happen on bluray movies, DVDS or video games though.

Has anyone been able to fix it that had it before?

Seems like all of them. ABC, CBS,NBC, ESPN,FX, NESN, just to name a few
Not all stations have fast moving camera or action scenes but it seems no matter what channel its on I get it.

Well I am the one who has been complaining about it on Food Network.
I also see it on Discovery, Nat Geo, History, TLC....
My local channels look good.
In fact, I was watching the playoff games and switching between D* and Fios.
It looked nearly identical between the 2.
All of my co-workers with Fios, see it also on the channels I listed.
If you call Verizon, they may send some one out who will check the signal strength and leave, if it is OK.
My techs have admitted that the D* is better on those channels but they can't do anything to improving Fios PQ.

I'm curious, how much longer are you going to continue to run this by us?
You should see how many other threads and forums he's posting about this. Be carefull though, I got a "personal attack" infraction for calling it the way I saw it in another thread, where he brought this up. It had nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Well, I think your locals can vary from location to location. For example, our CBS here has always been horrible (I've been through Comcast, DirecTV and FiOS) and it's always had compressed macroblocking. It doesn't really matter who I get it from since it's compressed at the source.

I've been told by others on this forum that it's a local affiliate thing.

Although to have all of your channels look that bad seems strange to me.

Macroblocking with fast motion is common on most network channels. They are often multitcasting, robbing bandwidth from the main channel. I used to watch on an OTA antenna and it too showed the same macroblocking.

If the OTA channel has it, then you know all other providers of that channel will also have it.

Ob, I just don't think they have enough knowledge. I'm convinced this is not a system wide issue (Food Channel) and is a problem that might be more isolated to your DAC.
