I had them mount the ONT inside the house - makes working on it much nicer, expecially this time of year. In my case the phone wiring was split up from a block on the inside of the house - not that it mattered - I don't have Verizon telephone service.
The bottom line is to have wiring (data, phone, CATV) from the ONT location to the current service point - if the ONT is near the old wiring hub, you just made the installers' job real easy.
