As reported in another thread on the new 1080p HP DLP sets, the 65" HP 1080p DLP (MD6580n) (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/sh...e=L1737A%23ABA) took best in show from PC Mag at Digital Life 2005 in New York.

CATEGORY: HOME THEATER
Winner: HP Pavilion MD6580 Microdisplay TV
Price: $4,999.99 list
Company: HP, www.hp.com

There were a lot of big TVs on the show floor, but the HP Pavilion MD6580 Microdisplay TV was the one that made us stop in our tracks. The display is an immense 65 inches and the high-definition (1080p) images were crystal clear. This is a set that could impress even the most hard-core home theater enthusiasts.
Also received a very positive review from Sound and Vision:

TV worth watching! :-)

Cynic. :)

The front spoiler on the Mits was key to that award...that and the side air bags. :D

Just teasin'. The HP sounds really nice, I may end up with one myself.

You guys are killing me with this thread. We are going into the HDTV arena soon and were looking forward to the new JVC models. With all the good reviews, perhaps a HP is in my future?? I am mainly a "Joe Consumer" but would love to have an HTPC hooked up to this (we gave new house - dual network drops in every room!!)

Decisions....

IMO, if you're interested in LCOS, the Sony 1080p SXRDs are better than the JVC 1080ps (initial comparisons in a few threads claim better black levels with the Sonys). Or, these HPs sound great as well.

I've had my 65" HP for 3 weeks now. It's like having your cake and eating it too.

I still haven't found any downside to the set. The only thing I can thnk of would be RBE, but that doesn't bother me at all.

In a earth shattering rumble, SXRDers cry across the globe.

Minutes after, HT enthusiasts realize once and for all that everyone is having their cake and eating it too. Peace envelopes all.

It's a well deserving set, and the SXRD was hot on it's tail. Nobody loses, really.

The preceding post brought to you by the association of the local video retailer who doesn't care which manufacturer wins because they sell both. Industry Plants from both manufacturers let beningn posts like this go--subject to prior approval!

Seems to me that HP would do much better if they got these sets out to more retailers. I've really disliked this TVs looks since I first saw the pictures. However, if the picture quality is good enough I can learn to change my mind. Since no one nears me carries this set, I had to write it off for the SXRD and it didn't even get a chance in my book. Both the HP & SXRD sound like real winners. And to top all this off, I work for HP. You'd think I'd get a great price but I doubt it. I'd get a better deal @BB on an HP PC than through the HP. Go figure  . Compaq used to give really good deals before HP bought them out.

I have been waiting around for the 70" 1080p JVC to come out that but then they jacked up their MSRP to $6999 which took it off of my list. Even with some sort of discount I cannot justify paying that much for a TV. The 65" HP at $4999 looks very appealing. Anybody know where you can go to see these TVs? I have to go take a look at the 73" MITS now too.

Just saw the HP at EHX for the first time, awesome picture even better features. All of the inputs illuminated and are on the front behind a panel, also you can watch all of the inputs at once by hitting the source button twice. HP is certainly playing some serious catchup in the HDTV world.

Geez, I just shuddered at the thought of a Compaq branded TV there for a moment. :p :)

Uh oh, looks like someone can't accept that both sets are top of the line and neck and neck PQ wise.

Stop the goddamned bickering, both sets are amazing, and I'd say a good 90% of sides chosen are due to personal preference, which is fine. It doesn't discount the other set though.
