Also, here's some details on the new program guide that's coming relatively soon (late summer).

This is from Multichannel News.

Cox Gasses Up Next-Generation Guide
Operator Taps NDS to Port Tru2way Apps; IPG Set for August Launch
By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 3/23/2009 2:00:00 AM MT
Cox Communications, gearing up for a late-summer launch of its next-generation interactive program guide developed with NDS, is stirring a slew of entertainment and information applications into the mix.

The MSO last May announced the deal to outsource IPG development to NDS, which has been building a tru2way-based guide to Cox's specifications. In addition to a brand-new user interface designed from scratch, the IPG features integrated program information across Cox's linear channels, video-on-demand and digital video recorder content.

Now, on top of that, Cox will layer in a wide range of interactive apps with NDS's help, including: caller ID and e-mail on the TV, news, sports, weather, games, movie listings, a "mosaic" view of multiple channels, horoscopes, lottery results and customer-care services.

"They're one of the first MSOs that are taking steps to deploy interactive on a larger scale," said Jesper Knutsson, vice president and general manager of sales for NDS Americas.

Originally, Cox planned to have those ITV applications reworked by TVWorks, the operator's joint venture with Comcast. Instead, the operator turned to NDS to do the job, to make the integration with the IPG "more seamless," said Lisa Pickelsimer, Cox executive director of video product development.

The guide, which Cox expects to begin deploying in August, will replace the Aptiv Passport guide (now owned by Macrovision Solutions) in its Motorola markets and Cisco Systems' SARA guide in its Scientific Atlanta systems.

"Our guides today have very much an ad-hoc feel," Pickelsimer said, noting that the IPG, VOD client and interactive TV currently are three separate clients.

For now, Cox is still keeping the NDS-developed guide out of the public eye. The company has declined to show demos or release screen shots.

Pickelsimer provided a brief rundown of the highlights: The main guide view is not a grid; it's a three-panel screen with a list of channels on the left, programs on the selected channel in the middle; and a program description on the right. (A grid also is available for those who prefer it.)

In addition to integrated search, the guide provides a "browse related" feature that links to other content based on similar actors or themes. For example, if Titanic is on the VOD menu the guide may link to an upcoming History program on famous ships, Pickelsimer said. Tribune Media Services's entertainment-information products On TV and On Connectors are built into the new guide, enabling such linkages.

Individual users in a household can program their favorite channels and customize ITV apps, so, for instance, each family member can pull up his or her own horoscope. The IPG also will provide remote DVR programming via Web or mobile phone.

Initially Cox will deploy the guide on new set-tops running tru2way middleware. The MSO is not disclosing which set-top vendor or OpenCable Application Platform middleware it is using. In a second phase, the plan is to bring the IPG to the existing HD and HD DVR boxes through the pre-OCAP OnRamp middleware developed by TVWorks.

Pickelsimer said the guide will let Cox add features in future releases, such accessing Internet content on the TV and personal media stored on home PCs. "We made a concerted effort to design an information architecture that would incorporate new things we haven't anticipated," she said.

NDS, in addition to its work on Cox's guide, has supplied the operator with its IEX automated set-top box testing solution.

In preparation for the IPG launch, Cox has been upgrading its headends to support that OCAP/tru2way, including installing new servers.

Cox started the guide-overhaul initiative in 2005. Internally the operator refers to the project as SCIN (pronounced "skin"), which stands for "Simple Consistent Intuitive Navigation."

"The underlying thought was, users don't want to interact with a guide -- they just want to find content," Pickelsimer said.

Noted Knutsson: "The goal is to not notice the user interface. If you notice it too much you're not doing your job."

The caller ID function has stopped working for me, is anyone else having this problem?
I don't see the caller ID messages on HD channels.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you know that my colleague, Eric Wagner, will be the new contact for Cox New England on AVS Forum. Eric's username is EJW_CoxNE. I have some new responsibilities that are limiting my ability to respond to your questions in a timely manner.

Much like I've tried to do, Eric will seek to answer the group's questions, assist with technical issues (including the issues with Caller ID to the TV noted above) and provide information about products and services (new HD channels, service enhancements, etc.).

Eric actually was a member of this Forum (2005) long before he joined Cox New England (2009). So, he's probably more qualified to address your questions than I'll ever be!!

Thanks,
AQ

Hi all...

Does anybody have or know where i can locate a nice QAM channel map?
I have seen some that people have done that includes the resolution and everything for each QAM channel.
But i am unable to locate such a map for Cox Cable in the Meriden area.

Any ideas or help?
My mother has a new Vizio Tv and i did a channel scan and it seemed to pick up lots of HD stations. But i want to make sure i am getting them all, plus it would be nice for her to have a list of what is what. ?

Thanks...

All - Anyone know when WVIT will begin to broadcast in HD? They have their teaser commercials out now and according to Wikipedia, they're supposed to start in June sometime.

They have been broadcasting network shows and sports in HD for a few years now. The Wikipedia entry refers to local news only. Is that what you're talking about?

Yes...I'm referring to their new studio and HD News broadcasting.

Does anyone know what the monthly rental rate is for a M cable card now a days from Cox? Is there still an installation fee or can I pick one up from Cox and install it myself?

I'm thinking of getting a Tivo HD DVR.

Thanks.

I'd like to know the same thing.. Last time I dealt with customer/technical support, they didn't know what an M card was.. I'd like to turn in 3 S cards and get 1 M-card for my tivoHD and save a few $.. But i really don't want to pay for the visit.. They've never been willing to give out cable cards without a truck roll.
I'm sure they dont like giving out cablecards, it prevents you from renting there equipment, but do to some law they have to require them.

The monthly rental fee for an M CableCard is $1.99. However (and I'm sure you know this), you wouldn't have access to Cox's guide or On DEMAND content.

Unfortunately, CableCard's aren't available for self install. You would have to call and set up an appointment for installation.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the response. Do you have to pay a digital gateway fee on top of that as well per month?

Thanks,
Brandon

This makes me sad! I have 3 S cards, and I'd like to go down to 1 M card.. Paying for a truck roll eliminates any savings that I'd save over the long term!

Anyone else have trouble with channel 700 last night (NBC30)? I had "The Tonight Show" scheduled to record, and received an error playing it back (I forget the exact wording, it was late). When I tuned into the channel, all I got was a black screen. Every other channel appeared to be working okay. I did not get a chance to check on it this morning.

Yes, you would need to pay for the mininum digital package, which is Gateway.

OK....time for me to vent.

Let me start by saying.....watching any of the HD channels is becoming a real P.I.T.A. ...

In and out of commercials...switching back and forth from non HD programming/commercials back to HD stuff....severe handshake issues...lots of green lines as the TV try's to readjust itself to the signal.

Huge problem for me....lots of times if you are watching a recorded program you need to let the signal settle into HD and then rewind to see what you have missed because of the BIG delay.

What's the deal COX?
Is there a better way to handle these types of issues or is this just the "Nature of the Beast?"
Also there has been lots of pixelation on several HD channels....not sure if it is a box problem (i have the newest cox HD-DVR)....or just the channels are having issues on their end.
But it is really annoying.

Once again...what's the deal COX?
Perhaps it's time to switch to Direct TV.
This is getting old.

OK...i think i'm done now....
I feel better

You can force the Cox DVR to a fixed video mode.. Set this to whatever native resolution your TV is. i.e. 1080I if your TV is 1080i or 1080P or 720P.. This will force all content to this resolution and your tv won't flip out between channel/commericial changes...

I don't have a cox dvr anymore, but it's in there, you'll have to play with the video settings. Moved to a tivo-hd with cablecards..

Hit the menu button twice, under Audio/Video, browse right to expand this menu, then highlight Video Output Format, browse right to set the HD output format, Select, confirm, then browse right for SD content.

Sidebar leaves sidebars, but converts to 1080i/720p or whatever your HD output setting is.
Stretch stretches the image and converts it to 1080i/720p.
480i converts it to 480i
480p converts it to 480p.

It helps a great deal.
Thanks all....

Later and happy 4th!!

They will be broadcasting their news in hd starting at 11am on the 14th. All of their news will be in hd from there on. This is from an email I got from Ronni Attenello Director of Programming at WVIT.

Well, I just looked at their 11am news and it is still their old crappy sd. CT broadcasters are a complete joke.

Sounds like I got some bad info from WVIT. Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up.

Edit: I just talked to WVIT. I was told the hd broadcasts have been moved back to Thursday at 11AM.

No need to apologize. CT broadcasters are simply a joke. They do not care about quality at all. WVIT is the last NBC O&O station not be in HD locally. All others are in HD since at least last year.

WFSB moved to new studios last year and they are not even widescreen, not to mention WTNH which is a complete disaster.

CT is the second most expansive TV market after New York, but as far HD quality it is like third world country.

Thanks for the update.

However, on Thursday they will probably have another excuse. I'll believe it when I see it. They were supposed to be in HD in June. This is just comical as far as the state of HD broadcasting in CT. They can't be more unprofessional and uncaring as they are here.

There are much smaller TV markets in this country that had local news in HD for years now.
