Does anyone fix these tv's ? How about the angle of a class action lawsuit being we spent a fortune on these sets 4-5 years ago and now we have been abandoned by HP. I am totally discouraged with their business practices. Anyone have any ideas???

Hello All

Looking for the IR board for a HP MD 5880n.

P/N L1735-60005.

Anyone have a dead TV willing to 'gift' this part away. Thanks

I have two new bulb assemblys for the md6580 new in box.

I want $125 for each bulb or $225 for both bulbs plus I'll throw in the bulb assembly that's in the TV, which is still good. $10 ea or $20 for all three bulbs for shipping FedEx to lower 48 states

Decided to part it out now, while still working good, to upgrade to a newer TV. It's been a great TV for 4 years with only two previous bulb changes and a macgiver fix for the famous blue line and this one was a replacement for the original HP md6500 that lasted a little over a year and 1/2.

Someone told me that HP has a buy back program. Can anyone verify that and whom to contact if that's the case?

Call John Baldock in Reno, NV. 89511 at 775-742-8510 for information or jdbaldoc@hotmail.con on what you need.

I can give several references for 100% satisfaction on thousands of dollars of private gun sales through gunbroker.com where all purchases were made with US Postal Money Orders.

I can also take PayPal with a 4% adder for payment on any parts.

Looks like some people got a great deal on Kevin's lamps at the eBay links above.

These days new HP lamps w/housing are $179.95 and bare bulbs are $144.95, with $10.95 shipping:

I have had my HP TV since Feb. '06 and now have the half-screen bands on the right side. I have done my diligence with upgrading firmware, putting in a fan, reset options, unplugged for hours, etc. Would like to find a light engine/color wheel somewhere to fix this problem. Any help please...

Thanks,

I also have an md5880n with a bad light engine that I'm willing to part out. PM me if you want a used lamp the remote control or just about anything else from the set.
I have the md5880n in perfect condition and great working order, aside from needing a new light engine. The bulb is 1 1/2 years old with only light use. If anyone is interested in purchasing for parts, etc. I am located in Scottsdale, AZ (also posted an ad on craigslist).

I'm selling my MD6580n on eBay. It's available for pickup only in Malibu, CA. It's served me very well, and I hate to part with it, but we're moving to a smaller place. Starting bid at only $49; auction ends 2/10.

Turned the set on aspect was way off. Top half of picture was showing hdmi input was working but the HP logo when you turn off the set was close to the bottom.
Unplugged when it was cool reset the lamp and did a master reset. At first it the aspect came on correctly but the red lights where on left solid right blinking 3 times. Did another master reset and now the picture is not viewable you can see it a strong picture bright and responds to remote commands. you can see the image change but is unrecognizable pattern.
Thanks

OK...wow, it looks like it may finally be my turn!

We were watching a recorded show, and noticed the set was alternately dimming slightly and then going back to normal brightness, then dimming again and the back to normal.

Did it consistently for several minutes while we watched.

So I turned it off, put in my spare bulb/housing, and hit the button to turn it back on, only it wouldn't turn on.

Tried w/three remotes, power button on the side of the TV, dead.

Put other bulb/housing back in, still no go.

Put backup bulb/housing back in, still no go. No noise, no click, no nothing, just sits there dead.

It has been running flawlessly until today since I got it, so I'm thinking something big blew on the main board/power supply...

So - likely need to think about replacing main board, or power supply?

Appreciate any troubleshooting suggestions...I'm letting it sit to cool off right now, and will try again later to see if it powers up. Some months ago I cleared out accumulated dust, etc., so it shouldn't be too dirty/dusty inside.

Maybe time to move on, but it has worked so well, picture is still amazing...

I would say it is time to move on. I am almost a year into my 65 inch Panny Plasma and love it and believe it or not more so than the HP which I never thought I would say.

Good Luck in whatever you decide

Danabw: I'd retire it. We finally did. We put it up in the game room for the kids to play console games on. The posterization isn't too bad for gaming. But, once the bulb goes, the set goes...

I've been through a few sets trying to find a replacement. I'm almost settled on our Vizio XVT but it has a few quirks (i.e. blooming, random reboots). In many respects, it is superior to the HP. However, the thing about out beloved HP sets that I really miss is that it had no weaknesses! Every set I look at these days has a serious weakness.

Anywho, good luck with the search... for a new set or parts

Thanks, guys...I'm pretty bummed. I'd hoped to ride the HP for at least another year or two, until 3D actually became a viable format (in terms of content availability and technology/glasses), but this may force my hand.

I'm still thinking about seeing if I can fix it, if it's something very simple and if the parts are free/cheap.

Damn...thought I was one of the chosen ones. ;-)

I replaced the mainboard a few years ago when I lost an HDMI port. One of the early owners that lived in Hawaii sold it to me. The mainboard handles signal-level processing. Based on what you observed, it sounds like the power regulation that feeds the lamp has failed.

Since you did not have any posterization issues, if you found a set from an owner that had posterization, I think there is a good chance you could fix it by swapping parts. I suspect that your light engine is fine.

However, I agree it is time to move on, and I would not spend too much time on it. Let us know what you decide to do. If you do decide to retire it, I bet that there is an owner that has posterization that would love to try your light engine.

Wow.

Just wow.

OK - the problem wasn't with an old TV...it was with an old TV owner.

I was in the process of moving the HP TV far enough back on our TV console so we could temporarily put our Sony LCD in front of it, when I noticed that (huge embarrassed grin here) I had left the HP bulb door sitting on the bookcase to the right of the TV. Totally forgot to put it back on when I was switching bulbs. So of course the set wouldn't start up.

DUH.

Just DUH.

Put the bulb door back on the TV and the lights in the front connection area lit up immediately, TV powered up immediately, and the brightness pulsing that we were seeing isn't even happening any more.

I'm assuming that issue may come back once the TV is fully warmed up, but at least the set isn't totally dead as I thought.

Sorry for the false alarm...feeling really stupid (but happy) at this point.

You may still be a chosen one . Variations in light output can happen as the lamp is failing.

By the way, I keep my lamp door off and keep the switch closed with a popsicle stick. It helps cooling. I also keep the other two front panels off and the rear panel off. I was a little worried about the door warping since more heat is released behind the door, but that has not happened.

Thanks for laughing quietly to yourself. Yes, I may be the chosen one, but have also proven I am a "special" one as well.

Thanks for the tip about the door/popsicle stick and the panels in general. I'm thinking I might take that approach, and maybe attach some cheese cloth or other very thin fabric over the openings to keep some of the dust out.

I am looking at the Epson Home Cinema 8700UB and spending about $500 to $1000 on a screen. I have a good room 14' wide and 20 deep with 99% dark. I have been reading about the best way to do this, But not much info from people that have had the pleasure of the HP MD6580n picture quality.

mostly watch movies and hdtv.

Thanks

My tv looks to be having the posterization issues and color flickering that everyone else is having. Started this week, turning tv off and back on fixes it for a while.

I had bought a new bulb a few months ago so if anyone is interesting in buy my bulb or lives in the salem, oregon area and want it for parts send me an email. I'm just going to replace it at this point.

I'm looking for a used bulb, less than 6 months old.

My set is still plugging along, with the back off and a 6" fan blowing onto the right side (as viewed from the front.)

Yeah...the light level fluctuations are back, so I'm going to put my spare bulb back in and implement your popsicle stick trick.

Hopefully it's just a bulb issue...

Whenever the fluctuations started on my set, within a few days there was a loud pop, followed by little pieces of glass everywhere. This happened with every bulb that failed on our set (5 of 'em).

Youch!

Thanks.

Replacing bulb moved to top of my to-do list!

Surprisingly, I think less dust collects in my set with all the covers off. I think the covers create small high velocity vortexes that suck in dust, and once the dust is in the cabinet the dust settles. I have noticed the same thing with PCs. It seems like more dust collects in a closed box than an open box.

Also, I concur with Darrell about the lamp. Why risk creating the mess and putting the TV through the electrical stress of having the lamp blow. However, hang on to the housing since it may be useful if lamps become hard to find but a re-lamping service can replace the bulb.

Well...I'm gettting some intermittent odd behavior.

Put the other bulb in and turned on the TV...after about an hour the picture started flickering...rapid dark/light flickering while watching...TV (live and recorded). As if someone was moving their hand up and down quickly between a screen and a light source.

Then it just stopped doing it and is stable again and was stable w/out flickering for about 15 minutes and then started some flickering again.

Hmm...back to being the unchosen one, maybe.

Any thoughts on what the flickering might mean? Normally I'd think bulb was the most likely, but the replacement bulb doesn't have a lot of hours on it so that just doesn't seem like it should be the issue. Both bulbs having light issues (though different ones, oddly) makes me wonder if something else is the root issue...
