I'm one of the people that suspects that his TV is a bit louder than it ought to be. I suspect it's color wheel noise since the sound varies when I'm switching "modes". But since I've never owned any sort of rear projector before, it's hard for me to decide what "normal loudness" is. I do however, own a Radio Shack sound level meter.

Do any of you other HP owners have one of these meters? If so, I'd love to compare notes. I just got a reading of 60dB off of my MD5880n. 61dB, if I hold my mouth just right. Here's how I took the reading:
  • Turn on the set. Watch it. Enjoy it.
  • At least two hours later, after the set has had a chance to get thoroughly warmed up, open up the front access door. (My TV seems to get louder after a couple hours.)
  • Turn off your AV amp, and/or turn the TV speakers all the way down. Tell your kids to hush.
  • Turn on the sound meter. Set it to the 60dB range. C Weighting. Slow response.
  • Place the snout of the meter against the center of the front panel, against the flat area right above the blue LED.
  • Now back the meter off just enough so that it's no longer touching the set. Leave it within a quarter inch though.
  • Note the reading. If the needle is on the 0, that's 60dB. If it's on -2, then that's 58dB, and so on.

Unfortunately, the meter won't be able to measure anything quieter than 50dB, so if you have a nice quiet set, you won't be able to tell me just exactly how quiet it is. We will however be able to tell whether it's significantly quieter than mine, in which case I'll be giving HP another call.

Well after reading through this thread after about a month from being away from the forums, I came across the post for the new firmware.

I decided to go ahead & take the risk & apply, instead of waiting for HP to send out the USB HD to me. I followed the instructions & everything went well, no problems. BIG thank you to the poster for the Firmware update link.

I used the Cruzer 512MB stick, a HP Rep told me that you can use any USB Memory stick @ 2GB or smaller.

I love this set, but I am still having issues with powering on the TV using the TVs original remote & my Harmony 880 remote. It stopped working around Dec 26, only way to turn Tv on is by hitting the power button on the TV itself.

After I applied this new Firmware, I was able to turn the TV ON using the HP remote, but after it being off for about an hour, the issue reappeared.
What is happening is that when I hit the POWER button on the remote to shut it off ( screen goes blank & HP logo appears for about 5 secs & disappears) the light engine is still running, it takes the light engine about 40 secs to shut off. While it's still running, I can use the HP remote to POWER On/OFF the TV, but once the the light engine stops & the TV is completely off, the remote can't power the TV back on.

I have been on the phone calling every week with HP techs about this issue since late Dec when this issue popped up. I've had the TV since Sept, & everything was fine up until Dec.

The techs keep saying it might be a remote control issue, but it's not, but they insist I wait to receive a new remote, before they can setup a tech visit or exchange.
To me it's some type of internal issue, either case the damn remote is on back order. it's a minor issue, but my concern is that it might be the powering on with remote issue now & develop into soemthing more down the road.

I am also worried b/c from reading some posts here from those who have had their Tvs serviced by techs, these guys never worked on this TV before & the thought of them taking my Tv apart & basically guessing without the assistance of a service menu or expereince on this TV isn't very assuring.

After the firmware update was applied, all the settings (picture/sound) were set back to factory default, so I simply reached for my booklet that UMR left for me with the calibrated settings for my TV & re-entered them again.
Some nights, channels such as INHD & DISCOVERYHD show some stunning 1080i content, that really bring the HP to life.
HDNET is awesome as well. I was watching last nights State of the Union speech, by our great pres G.W.Bush on Ch.2 HD, it was stunning. my older bro who's not even into all this HD/Home Theater experience was sitting watching with me. I flipped through the other local channels HD stations to see which was showing in HD & looked better.

Ch.2, 4 & 7 HD were showing the speech, but Ch.2 was clearly the best looking of them all. My bro comented while watching with me, when i turned to him & said "Look the president in HD!" he then responded, "Yea, you can see every damn pimple & red spots on his face & neck!"

Overall I love the TV, great work HP! But the HP tech support team needs to get on their butts & help me resolve my issue.

I've been reading alot about this HP cause i'm plannng on purcahsing one in the next few months. If I remember correctly there was a post on this sight of someone who had a 2-3 year old DLP and measure around 62-63db with a bad color wheel. He replaced it and was getting in the low 50's db.

I also remember someone else in the hp thread saying something about measuring 52db with the HP. So if your getting in the low 60's I would call HP and put in a request about possible color wheel replacement. Just tell them what is up.
Maybe you can even ask before hand what the propper sound level is supposed to be and once they say ##db's you can say well mine is ##dbs higher. Then they just cant blow you off with "thats normal out put"

While your at it find out where they are measuring from. I do some sound meter testing on steam turbines (work) and we measure from 1 ft away at 4 points (FRT, sides, rear)

and please share this info cause there is alot of complaints on this slight about this problem and if we have a standard we can compare info.

Well, my 6580 got delivered this morning at 8:30. I ordered through HP Shopping and the delivery guys were great. I only had about an hour to play around with it. The quickest thing to hook up was my Xbox via component cables, so that is all that I had a chance to test on the set. Here are my first impressions:

1. My manual had the "pizza stain" on it (which appears to be a good omen).

2. Old firmware installed and missing info in the TV information.

3. Picture looks great.

4. Very, very little humming from the speakers. I need to put my ear up to them to hear it. If I move my ear 4" away from the speaker, I can no longer hear the humming.

5. No color wheel whine. I cannot hear the color wheel spinning at all. I can put my ear next to the back and front of the set and not hear a sound.

6. No fan noise. If I put my ear up to the back of the set, I can slightly hear the fan. However, standing in front of the set, I can't hear a thing.

I will get much more time to play around with this set once I get home from work. Now I just need to wait for my stand to be delivered and my HTPC components.

Later,

Chris

Ding62,

I have a radioshack sound level meter as well and will do the test when I get home tonight. I have done it in the past at the back of the set (by the power cord) and I got a reading around 60db. My set is much quieter than my computer and also my PS2. There is a very slight fan noise if you put your head behind the set, but otherwise it's not a problem for me.

I did the firmware update tonight on a 128mb USB drive of mine and everything is working great! I unplugged everything before updating. My Harmony 360 remote is almost working flawlessly. Here are my findings:

- The white line across the top of the screen on component inputs is gone!
- Channel and input switching is faster and it also seems to me that menu navigation is faster.
- Discrete codes work great.
- I have an N64 hooked up via S-video to the Video 1 input. Before the update there would be screen glitches every 20 seconds or so when playing N64, now they are gone!
- I now have no sound coming out of the digital audio out after the firmware upgrade. It starts working if I cycle the sound options. Anyone figure out a permanent fix for this?

One person reapplied the update, then cycled the internal speakers off and then on again once or twice and then audio out worked fine again. I'd try:

1. Cycle the internal speakers off and on again a couple of times (via the Settings menu)
2. If that doesn't help, reapply the firmware and then cycle the internal speakers off/on. Note that when you reapply the firmware you evidently won't get the final screen showing the firmware update versions...seems it doesn't appear on subsequent flashes of the same release.

I have a couple of Harmony questions. I have my TV setup as the MD5880N.

1) Has anyone found out what the Recall & Return codes are used for? (they're listed as codes for the TV) I'm sure they aren't for going to the previous channel, the ChannelPrev code does that.

No idea...my set doesn't respond to them. They are likely commands that Harmony created in error when they set up the TV. They also set up a PC2 input, which doesn't exist...nobody's perfect.
Quote:

2) The InputNext code doesn't cycle through the inputs like it's name implies (it just brings up the source screen like if you pushed the source button on the TV remote). Does anyone know how to get this to work or if this feature currently exists on these TV's?

Could be an error by Harmony when they set up the remote codes...in any case the set currently doesn't support an "input next" cycling through inputs, but w/direct selection of them via discretes there is no need for that anyway.

Quote:

3) For some reason the setup incorrectly maps the same button configuration between my watch DVD activity (uses Panny S97) and my watch PS2 activity. I think it's because both can be DVD players. For example, when you customize the button config for an activity (from the homepage click Customize, then Change the behaviour of buttons) I have 3 columns, DVD as DVD Player, TV as Video Display, and AV Receiver as Volume Control. The online setup incorrectly assigns commands for the DVD and TV to one button on the Harmony. If I remove one of these assignments, it then removes it from the Watch DVD activity AND the Play PS2 activity. So this prevents having separate button assignments for these 2 activities. Anyone know how to fix this?

I have a PS2 and DVD player in my config, and never seen this problem. I'd give Harmony support a call...they should be able to sort it out for you in just a few minutes.

Danabw,

Thanks for the help. The reason I was asking about the InputNext code is to avoid using 6 of the Harmony buttons for inputs. I would rather assign the buttons to other functions.

I've just applied them to LCD "soft" buttons (no limit there).

If your activities are set up properly, you should rarely need to change sources manually, right? If you want access to the source discretes, you can always assign them to LCD buttons in the TV device mode, and to LCD buttons in each activity...

Updated (again) w/some recent additions from posts.

As best I can tell, current summary of reported results from 0.12/D36 Firmware Update:

The Good (fixes/improvements/changes):
  • Removed white band/line at top of screen on component input
  • Sound over HDMI works consistently (as well as one person who had problems w/picture and sound over HDMI w/a Sony DVD player)
  • HTPC connectivity (EDID info) works consistently
  • RGB settings maintained after powering off the set or switching inputs
  • Discrete Power and Source Selection commands supported (via third party remote like Harmony or Pronto)
  • Fast channel/resolution changes
  • Improved 1080p HTPC desktop. ("It used to be that the small yellow text of this forum was not an even yellow. If I looked closely, some of the yellow text had small white areas. Now the text is an even yellow, and the desktop appears noticeably sharper.")
  • Changing aspects is much faster and the sound doesn't mute when switching
  • Volume Leveling works consistenly ("...Keeps the DB output the same at all times. Basically, it turns the volume down automagically when those obnoxiously loud commercials come on.")
  • Stops speakers "popping" when going from Normal to Movie sound mode
  • Stops dimming/brightening during source selection
  • "I have an N64 hooked up via S-video to the Video 1 input. Before the update there would be screen glitches every 20 seconds or so when playing N64, now they are gone!"
  • "My local CBS station is channel "WBTV 225-225" Now, this long name doesn't get cut off on the display anymore."
  • "The name of the TV program currently on air listed in the INFO area at the bottom of the screen (when INFO is pushed), using source=cable (TimeWarner).
  • You can add to favorites right from the INFO screen (Red button on Info bar)

The Bad:
  • Lose sound on OTA when use channel up/down to change channels, direct entry of channel numbers does not cause problems.
  • Brief (1 to 1 1/2 sec) screen flashing on input change
  • PIP issue: "I can no longer do PIP with my 1080p HTPC displayed full screen, and either cable or antenna in a PIP box, if the PIP box is either small or medium. I get a bandwidth limitation message. However, it works fine with a large box. I can do side-by-side, and I can do PIP with 1080p in small, medium, and large boxes. PIP works fine with 720p and 1080i."
  • Lockups when changing channels on STB connected via HDMI, possibly limited to changes in resolution (e.g., 480i to 1080i channel). Reported to be resolved by reapplying firmware update by one owner. Others haven't tried/reported if this consistently fixes it yet.

Mixed:
  • Iris, either more or less aggressive depending on who you believe (posts in both directions so far). One person felt it behaved more consistently.
  • Loss of digital audio out. Inconsistent reports so far, works fine for some, others having problems. One person reapplied the update, then cycled the internal speakers off and then on again (or vice-versa) and audio out is working fine. Unknown yet if the fix was just cycling the internal speakers off and on, or the combination of that and reapplying the update, or possibly just unplugging the set and then plugging it in again (part of reapplying the firmware) and then cycling the internal speakers.
  • Two people reported intermittent loss of audio over HDMI 1 on HD channels.
  • One complaint regarding default color/screen settings after update.

Just wanted to thank Darrell, Dana & all others who have contributed to this great thread. After researching HDTV's for over a year I decided to pull the trigger on the 6580 & after a long wait, I'm finally enjoying 1080p goodness! I purchased the set from hpshopping in November (with TVA pricematch) but had to keep it in storage for over 2 months while the construction on my new house was completed. After all the negative posts, I was worried my set would be DOA, especially after sitting around for 2 months. I am happy to report I have what I consider to be a flawless set: no speaker hum, no fan noise, no white line over component, no RBE or SSE, audio over hdmi & the best PQ I've ever seen with my 2 eyes! I have the Oppo connected to HDMI2, X-Box 360 & Brighthouse cable connected to Component 1-2 & the 6580 itself connected to a 5.1 receiver via coax. I connect the components directly to the receiver via optical for DD & DTS for all sources. I have the .10 version w/ no EDID info but am not using my set to connect to an HTPC. I sent the card back for the firmware but I won't use it for fear of creating problems that never existed in the first place. BTW, HDMI1 is reserved for PS3. I just wanted to let all those who read this thread know that there are flawless sets being delivered out there & not to hesitate picking one up. The only issue I have is that my front panel pops open during use. I just put 2 small pieces of electrical tape on each side near the speakers & that problem has been solved. All in all, I'm a very satisfied HP customer. No complaints with North American either. They not only placed the set on my HP stand but they also screwed it into the stand with no hesitation. Thanks again to all thread contributers.

My set had this same problem. I opened a ticket with HP support and waited. But I came to notice that the door was bowed out in the center a little. When I closed it, the ends contacted the set first and then the center, so there was always outward force being applied when the door was closed, and the door latch didn't have enough strength to keep the door closed. The door only opened itself, by the way, when the set was turned on, so either small vibrations or heat were helping it pop open.

So with the door open, I placed my knee in the center and flexed the outer ends outward carefully. Voila! Problem solved, so I called HP and closed the ticket. The door has never popped open on its own since.

Just wanted to let everyone know that HiDef Lifestyles came through as promised. There was a slight glitch in that stock of the 65" HPs in the Fresno warehouse arrived in plain brown boxes as opposed to the normal HP-festooned boxes of yore. Being suspect, HiDef called me and expressed their reservations about the CA stock and informed me they could send a unit from their Texas facility, but I would not receive it on Friday as promised. It would be more like Tuesday. While disappointed and a little suspicious, I agreed. To make up for it, HiDef offered to send a me little gift, which I totally accepted, of course! (PM me if you want to know what it was.)

Anyway, so, they kept me informed with the progress of my order, online and via email. Their online order status page is pretty good and even provided direct links to the shipping companies' tracking updates. A follow-up emails after delivery was also sent.

My TV arrived yesterday afternoon via FedEx freight. It was for curbside delivery, but the FedEx guy offered to bring it up the driveway near the front door or even put it in my garage. The thing is so light, he used a hand truck! (Is that bad? The box had a wooden pallet strapped to it's bottom. I'm attaching a couple pics of it as it journeyed from the front of my house through the side gate and into the backyard. Silly, huh? I'm also attaching a pic of the TV sitting on the floor next to our old Sony for size comparison purposes. I still like the looks of the Sony. That burled cherry wood trim is pretty sweet.

So, to wrap it up, HiDef Lifestyle gets the proverbial two thumbs up. They are a legit operation and they deliver the goods as promised. If there's a glitch, they are quick about telling you and very upfront and honest. I told them they should sponsor groups like ours and get on review sites, etc. But, they said they prefer to build their business via word of mouth and their reputation. What did Aaron say? "We don't want to be the biggest, we want to be the best." But, I gotta tell ya, if they treat everyone the way they treated me, they'll have no choice but to become big!

Oh, and to make your deal even sweeter, just write a review of the HP 65" on Pricegrabber.com and they'll send you $25! As a favor to me, I'd appreciate it if everyone here could go check out my review and give me some props. I don't know what I get, but I sure would like to be recognized for my eloquent verbosity! Hah! Click here to go to my review and learn more about getting $25 for writing one of your own!

Thank you for your time!

Great for quick tweaks). And the combination of my 5880 with my DVDO VP30 gives me amazing flexibility. Today I connected my portabledirectly to the HP MD5880n (a very capable top of the line Dell M170 running WinXP Media Edition 2005 with an NVidia 7800 GTX Ultra card) and viewed some native 1080p WMVHD material -- the 1080p version of Step Into Liquid. Jaw dropping! And yes, the INFO display verified that the HDMI2 input was accepting 1080p. Those who dismiss lack of 1080p native input capability as something trivial "because there just isn't any 1080p source material" just don't get it.

Cool!

Nice pics...now that's what I call an upgrade, even if you have to lose the burl wood.

Glad to hear that HiDef came through for you. Enjoy the pretty pictures...

You know what... I bet hp left out one step for the firmware update process. I'm thinking that we all should have gone in to the settings and done a "reset to factory default" prior to the upgrade. That is the only thing that makes any sense to me as to why the defaults, etc appear to be different for different owners.

Today my DOA original set was finally picked up and the ordeal is over (I hope.) However, what transpired today was just the icing on the cake and just proved what I've been saying all along. Great set - questionable manufacturer's support. Read the following account (quoted from my "home" forum to avoid links and duplicate writing) and enjoy it.

Quote:

The Insanity Continues...

Well, after 45 days they finally came and got my DOA original HP MD5880n, but even that didn't go without incident. Over the past few days I received several calls from some company called "Decision One" (I believe they repair computers) that someone would be picking up my set today (Wednesday) between 8 a.m. and 12 noon to ship it back to Hewlett Packard. Around 9 a.m. I received a call from a Decision One technician who said that he was coming over to coordinate the exchange and to set up the TV that was being delivered. I informed him that no exchange or set up was involved since I had received my replacement a week ago and all that was going to happen was for the old set to leave my premises. The technician seemed surprised but said he'd be over at 10 a.m. to "coordinate the paperwork" since the trucker would be there by then.

At 10 a.m. the technician arrived and, of course, no trucker and no box. After a few phone calls he found out that nobody could find the trucker even though they were supposed to be there at that moment according to the dispatcher. The technician spent about a half hour with me marvelling at the great HD picture on my working 5880. His comment, "I've never seen one of these sets before" didn't exactly instill in me any confidence regarding his ability to provide setup or service had that been required. Luckily, that wasn't necessary. At about 10:30 the technician told me he had another appointment scheduled about 15 miles away at 11 so he would have to leave. A final call to the trucking dispatcher verified that the trucker was missing in action so the technician left for his next appointment. He told me that since I appeared to know what I was doing just to sign any paperwork if and when the truckers appeared.

Fifteen minutes later a truck pulled up with two workers and an empty HP MD5880n box. They had no idea that a technician was supposed to meet them and said that nobody had contacted them all morning. They brought the empty box into my garage (where the technician and I had placed the faulty set) and then attempted to get the set packaged up. This was hilarious. Although the box was the right size the packing inserts were in no way able to accommodate the MD5880n. It was worse than trying to solve Rubik's Cube or a 6 star Sudoku! Finally the truckers said, "Screw This! You're just returning the set to HP, right?" I told them that this was the plan. They then proceeded to place the set in the box and used some of the packaging material to loosely hold it in place as they slid the top of the box over the set and onto the base of the box and the skid. They then loaded the skid onto the truck and mumbled something about wrapping it up tightly back at the warehouse before shipping it back to HP. I signed and dated the receipt and off they went.

Wait. There's more.

About an hour later, as the clock struck 12, the doorbell rang and when I answered a man in a pickup van said he was there to pick up some sort of TV for HP. I said it was already picked up and asked him if he had a box with him. Of course he didn't. When I mentioned that "Decision One" had picked up the set he commented that this was probably a case of some secretary placing the pickup order twice. He then put my entire predicament into perspective when he said, "At HP the left hand doesn't know that the right hand is doing." Truer words were never spoken. This should be on the front page of the manual!

And now the kicker. As I was sitting at the computer writing the second paragraph of this account the phone rang. It was the original technician from CompUSA (the guy who was supposed to come on January 4th.) He was calling to inform me that the light engine had arrived and that he wanted to come over and install it in my TV. As soon as I stopped laughing I told him that if he hurried he might be able to catch the truck with the faulty set. It sure wouldn't be too difficult to repair the set since it was only loosely packed in the carton. However I told him to be careful to avoid some guy in a pickup van (with no box) who was looking for a TV to pick up and who, therefore, might not be paying too close attention to the road!

We both had a good laugh when I filled him in on the day's events. I thanked him for his perseverance in this matter. After all, the repairman was just trying to do his job and wasn't responsible for this massive screwup. He told me that this happens all the time since the people who schedule these things don't coordinate them very well and that very often he has to make several calls and trips before an issue gets resolved. I believe that Mr. Pickup Van had said it more succinctly with his "Left Hand/Right Hand" comment.

So what's the moral of this story? Today's events just prove to me that it is imperative that if you are looking to get one of these HP sets that you must align yourself with a dealer who is equipped to handle any exchanges without any middlemen involved. If you get a good set (probably much better than a 50-50 chance) you will be extremely pleased. But if you run into a lemon, as I did, you need a "Plan B" since the alternative is frightening.

Caveat emptor!

Just a quick note to anyone who might care.

As I suspected, the Pronto codes that I uploaded to remote central, as well as posted here, contain a working discrete code for power ON. Power Off always worked, but Power ON wasn't in the interim firmware update. I upgraded last night and confirmed that the code works.

Many thanks to "you know who" for supplying the information in the first place. :-) See, I'm "discrete" till the very end. :-)

Prior to the firmware update, I couldn't get any sound from my hdmi input. Now I have sound BUT the picture and sound do not appear until I physically unplug the hdmi cable from the tv and plug it back in. I tried reloading the firmware but still get the same results (?)

Glad to hear that HiDef came through for you. Enjoy the pretty pictures...

Yeah, seriously. That Sony is more than 11 years old! It's not even HD. How scary is that? I was toying around with the idea of gutting it and popping a plasma or DLP TV in there. I could convert the center control panel into a center channel speaker. How crazy would that be?

Eh, the Salvation Army truck is swinging by next week to haul it away. I got better things to do.

Thanks Steve,

Now it's off the Radio Shrek to snag some component cables and an HD/OTA antenna! Anybody got any recs?

Nobbie...only recommendation is don't buy Monster. That may be all Radio Shack carries (my local one is that way) and they are over priced and not going to improve your experience over standard component cables. Save your money for the antenna and some new burlwood accents on your stand.

The device is Dish Network 942 and yes, the same problem on both hdmi1 and hdmi2

This isn't the first time we've heard about troubles w/the Dish 942, I believe...have you contacted Dish to see if they have any info on this issue from their end? Probably best to talk to Dish and then HP about it.

There was another Dish user (jbeedy) who was connected via HDMI and appeared to have things working OK, but another person noted slow turn on time for his Dish 942 on HDMI...a minute or more:

The 942 has an inactivity sensor and powers itself off even if the kids don't turn it off. The HDMI 1 bottom info banner appears after 10-20 seconds but the HDMI picture takes over a minute to show up.

Any body else have slow HDMI start up issues? I suspect the 942 HDMI just takes a long time to wake up. I was starting to worry that the $7.49 6 foot HDMI to HDMI cables I bought from computertechnet.com might be the problem, but I see no issues once everything is going.

I've been following this thread from day one, and several people have reported the mysterious pizza stain on their manual. I'd love to know how it's possible? Is the same manual being passed on from refurb to refurb? Or are the Chinese people eating pizza while packing these things?
