I went through this with HP in Canada a couple of weeks ago. This TV will be distributed through Best Buy as you have found out.

The HP guy I was talking with suggested I check with Best Buy and use the product number L1737A as well as md6580n.

I know the Best Buy stores can see the products in the pipline even if they are not in the stores. The stores seem to get what's called sku numbers or tracking numbers a good two or three weeks before the items are actually available.

We may find that as soon as the US Best Buy stores start getting this machine, then they'll start showing up here. The Samsung 6168 showed up at Best Buy a few weeks after appearing in the US Best Buy.

I wouldn't consider having one shipped to Canada. It is very unlikely the warranty will cross the border with the TV. It might, but you'd better make sure.

For just a little more money than the HP stand, you can buy a really nice Bell'o Italian-designed stand on the web for this set. Check out the Bell'o AVS-2572
http://www.bello.com/index.php?parti...85&categ_id=40

or if you don't mind a little overhang on the sides, the Bell'o AVS-2563 or some of their other 63" -wide tops.

I found you can buy these at pretty good discounts on the web with FREE shipping and no tax. They'll run equal or $100-150 more than the HP stand and so much better quality. I sent my HP stand back after inspecting it and bought the AVS-2572 from a local high end store who price matched the web price.

If you don't like the Bell'o designs, there's BDI (ex. Axis 8027 http://www.bdiusa.com/avfurniture/axis_8027.shtml) that again will just give you about 1/2" of overhang on each side.

You can start by checking out places like:

http://www.racksandstands.com/
http://www.audio-video-furniture.com/

Interestingly, the November issue of Sound & Vision has a whole article on TV stands along with links to the manufacturers.

Those Bello are very high quality stands. I've seen them many times. We just don't care for the modern styling. Another option is to go to a high-end import furniture store. You'd be surprised what you can find in these places. Truly incredible pieces. Just one store in Houston had over 12 different pieces that would have worked perfectly with these sets.

Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. I'm in love with the cherry furniture cabinet made by a company in Maine (Green Designs) but its incredibly expensive-- just doesn't make sense for me as the tv is going in a dedicated room and not my living room.

The wood stuff is expensive but nice. I'll have to stick with the contemporary glass and metal for now.

I think the price you pay for having such a large tv screen is there are fewer furniture pieces at that size to accommodate it.

I am just about to pull the trigger on a MD5880n. I am slightly concerned however that the family room is quite light. There is a patio door on one side and a long window behind the couch facing the TV.

Is there any reflectivity on the screen? how does the display hold up in a bright room?

Well, the cables pass into a hole in the stand to the shelves beneath. The cables are hidden until they pass through that hole, and then, they come out at the very rear of the shelving (which is black and low, so it's hard to notice unless you're peering back there).

I can't comment on whether the cables will pass all the way through the TV to the back without the HP stand, seeing as I actually own the HP stand myself. I'll let someone else speak to that.

Our set is in a room surrounded by large windows. There are no reflections. If it the sun is shining directly on the the screen, while there is not a reflection, the screen does get washed out. So, at some parts of the day, we do tilt the blinds somewhat. Hope this helps.

You will definitely want to shade the screen from direct sunlight (which is probably not good for the electronics anyway). Provided you do that, it should work pretty well (as it does for me in my fairly bright living room).

Then again, this probably goes for just about any TV, at least of the projection variety.

Yes, they pass all the way through and out the back. We then run them through a hole in the back of our stand to the STB/DVD. There are no visible wires from the front or the sides. You have to look behind the set along the wall to see wires at all.

The price you pay for having such a large TV screen is... having to pay off next month's credit card statement.

Haha, so true.

You know what stunk though... the day I was supposed to be able to order my set, hp was running an 18 month, no interest, no payments, deal.

The set was one day late and the next day the offer was gone

Man expensive is an under statement. So how does HD football look on this TV? Is everyone still blown away by it?

It now appears that the new HP's will be available at BB in Canada. Since only Canada is mentioned can we assume that perhaps BB in USA will never be in this loop? I understand that in the past HP has been heavily "direct marketed", but a physically huge product like 58"-65" television not only presents logistical problems but buyers concerns. For the consumer, having these sets available at say BB and CC allows for competitive pricing (like sale prices) as well as set up and delivery options. Seeing the HP is an important step to many but buying it locally may be even more important. If I have a problem I'd like to complain face to face with the people I bought it from.

HD Football looks incredible on the 58" set. My friends are all blown away when we watch the games.

Has anyone used the Harmony 880 with these sets? Just wondering how it works with the HP. Thanks.

I kind of figured it would look good. HD football looks great on my RPTV as well but it is time to upgrade my set is 4+ years old now.

No way...he must be like 13 or something...

Meet Mikey...aside from being in a very (at the time) famous commercial, also the subject of an old urban legend...

It's for getting yourself into deep do do if you don't know exactly what you are doing

Let an expert do the fiddling, report their findings here, and then judge if you want, or even need to go there.

Just a suggestion
