The Official HP Pavilion 1080P DLP Owner's Thread - Page 308

I've owned my 6580 for almost 2 years without a hitch. Did have a speaker humm that was resolved, but other than that, a perfect TV. No bulb replacement yet, and the TV is on every day.

I do have a 5 year warranty with Best Buy up here in Canada, and am wondering if anyone experiencing TV trouble has had to deal with Best Buy for a replacement or service?

Just curious about Best Buy behaviour in the event something happens over the life of this warranty.

Thanks

Nice Thread, But, HP has really dropped the ball on this one.
I am the proud owner of a paperweight.
My 6580 started showing bad signs of color blurring and distortion.
After 13 months the bulb had to be replaced...just after the warranty.
I have replaced it 3 times in 16 months. Now the light engine has been replaced (HP Techs finally decided that the bulb replacements were excessive). They took 6 weeks to get the parts and 7 hours to change the light engine (HP in home warranty program SUCKS) After the replacement the unit now has a bad power supply! At least the Tech was standing there when it started to smoke! Thank God they decided to stop producing these, I have had a real nightmare trying to get this thing fixed! NEVER AGAIN.

Hi Friends,

Just installed a bluetooth mouse yesterday and within minutes my 6580 started shutting off with the blue light clicking as if the set was trying to restart. I have since switched back to my regular mouse and no problems. Does anyone have the reason why the bluetooth wavelength 'seems' to interfere with the HP?

BTW, Have had my set since June 06 with no probs and willing to sell. Love it but this forum has me worried. I use my set every night for approx. 6 hrs and never for a PC. Have always used a small 5" table fan to blow behind the vents to keep the set and my dvr cool. I decided to do this since I first bought the set and noticed the extreme heat output at the bulb vent. Keep in mind that I have placed the fan to blow on the vents away from the bulb vent to circulate cool air over the other components. Maybe this may help extend the bulb and other parts. I leave the fan on til a few minutes after the set does it's own shutdown after the hp fans have done cooling the bulb and clicked off.

My friend has a Toshiba 72" and I noticed that the heat exhaust from the bulb fan is much less than the HP.

Thanks

For the life of me, I can't understand how a bluetooth mouse would affect the TV. I don't think that the TV has any RF control mechanism.

I have been using a bluetooth mouse with my 5880n for two years, and I have had no issues.

Dave,

I'm just as baffled since I haven't had a problem since I went back to my old mouse.

heads up - my 5880n started doing that the blue light restarting thing all on its own but never resolved itself and I was told I needed to replace the light engine at the very least, and possibly the mainboard as well.. still waiting for resolution under warranty...

I am very pleased with my Sony DVP-NC85H. I am sure there are ones that are slightly better at a much higher cost, but for around $100 this gives you the five disc carousel and the quality of the image upconverted to 1080i seems excellent to me.

I'm just out of 2 year warranty on my 65...original bulb and never any problems (fixed hum w/wire fix, and am on the updated firmware).

Now that I'm out of warranty I suppose I'm living on borrowed time, but my set has been very good to me so far, and still love the picture and features.

Wanted to give my own update of the MD5880n HDTV.

I've owned it since it was 1st released back in '05. Earlier this year I got the purple line across the top of the TV screen. it doesn't bother me much as it's only noticable if you're looking for it or in a lite/white background.

3 days ago while playing Gears of War online on my XB360 I heard a very loud pop coming from my TV. Right away the screen went blank, but the sound was still working & the blue LED light in the front started flashing. I knew it was the bulb.

I had a spare that I had bought off of some1 from the AVSForum & replaced the damaged bulb w/ it.

The funny thing is that w/ the replacement bulb, the TV is very bright again, I hadn't realized how dark/dimmed it had gotten. Now to search for another replace bulb for this TV.

I have loved this TV as the PQ has been very impressive. I will leave this TV to my family when I move soon & buy me a new HDTV in '08.

I still have about 2-3 yrs remaining on my Warrantech warranty & so i am deliberating whether to have them service my TV to fix the purple line across the top of the TV, I am hesitant about that due to the many horror stories other owners have posted here regarding their own TV repair service experiences.

Decisions, decisions! I'll wait until after CES2008 to select my new HDTV.

I got my MD5880n on Oct. 31, 2005, so I am out of warranty too. A year ago, I also got the purple line at the top, and had the light engine replaced. The new light engine was quieter and the alignment was better, so I have been very happy.

I have never had a lamp burn out. However, I did buy a spare and swapped in the spare to make sure it worked. Also, my lamp was swapped with the light engine replacement, so my lamp is only a year old (assuming there was a new lamp in the replacement light engine).

I have developed a minor problem. When viewing analog cable, there has always been a very slight pulsing of the whole image (maybe around 10Hz). Lately, the pulsing has become much more noticeable. Analog OTA is fine.

It's not a big deal for me. I purchased an Onkyo TX-NR905 in August, and I am using the 905's Reon processor to deinterlace analog cable from a JVC SVHS. The result looks very good, and the analog picture is better than anything I ever got with the 5880n's analog tuner with either OTA or cable.

I hope it lasts at least another year since the HP looks as good as anything else I see in the stores. If I had to replace it today, I would probably get a 120Hz Mitsubishi or Samsung DLP.

I think I have the purple line problem as well. In my case I have a pie shaped blue band along the top of the screen. It is about 1/2in wide on the right side and tapers to nothing just left of the screen center. It overlays the image on the screen.
I am out of warranty and HP tech support has no idea of what is wrong.
So, for anyone who had the purple line problem does mine sound the same and did a light engine replacement fix it?
I must have the power supply / ballast assembly problem ??
Blue light , then double red left, then double red right (slight clicking sound)
then shuts down.
first problem sence I bought this MD6580n
I think I have one of the first 500 off the line.
I'm an HP employee.

I fanally got the HP in home warranty service to repair this 6580n. Light engine and power supply replacement. Wow was that an ordeal! The sevice was performed by a contractor for Comp USA. Nice guy but had no experience with HP DLP units.... I crossed my fingers and watched him struggle for 6 hours!
Back to my problem. After the repair I now have the BUZZ in the speakers. I have called HP and they let me know that it is a known issue with no current resolution. Has anybody fixed this without just cutting the wire to the speakers?

LOL! Typical HP Tech response. Never HP again. Search this thread as HP actually mailed out a kit to fix this problem. An owner posted a do-it-yourself fix and another gave detailed instructions how to disconnect the speakers. GL

You can try the solution found here (http://cykf.net/hp_stuff.htm) for the speaker buzz, assuming the buzz was not created by something the repair guy did, and is the commonly known speaker buzz that only requires the "ground wire fix".

Good luck

HP will not get any more business from me. It was so expensive to repair my 5880 that my extended warranty company bought me a new (not HP) TV. Now I am stuck with a very large paper weight! I have been trying to get a real service manual with schematics, so that I can a least try to fix it myself or at least be certain as to what part is broken i.e. Main board, light engine etc. I am thinking of taking it apart and selling it piece by piece. Problem is I just don't have room for it in my house anymore and it needs to go. HP was a bad experience, one that I will not repeat with them.

May I ask which Extended warranty Company and what tv did you get as a replacement?

Repair Master (Warrentech) and Samsung HL-T6187s
post #9230 of 10834
A month ago, my 5880 died, after 21 months of troublefree operation. The bulb exploded. But putting in my spare bulb revealed that something else was damaged during the failure (no bulb ignition, red LED trouble code - 2 left blink, 3 right blink). HP sent a repair agent 10 days later, with new LVPS/ballast, new mainboard, new light engine. After several hours, replacing the LVPS (didn't fix it), replacing the mainboard (didn't fix it), we decided not to replace the light engine (low probability of being the problem vs much labor and optical alignment issues). The set was declared unfixable, and a week later I received an exchange 5880. Probably a refurb, but you can't tell, cosmetically perfect, no PQ or geometry issues, working fine so far. Glad I invested in the HP extended warranty. My main complaint is the scheduling errors/incompetance, that it took 3.5 weeks to get me a working set.

I had repairmaster extended Warranty on my HP 5880N and they tried to give me a Refurb Sammy HLR 6168 (2005). I argued that it did not accept 1080P through HDMI but they wouldn't listen. I took $1200 cash and put it toward my Sony A3000. Needless to say, I am pissed and will never give them my business again.

Thanks for the reply,

HP really dropped the ball here as far as cutting out on it's customers. The TV itself is awesome when it is working, PQ is great, but once this Tv starts messing up, we're screwed.
davenrino and TMSKILZ,

HP has to realize that now they have developed a large group of former customers that will and I will guaranty, will try to kill their name as I will never advise people to buy from HP, especially from the TV and monitor division. They had a GREAT product and if they had stood by their customers and fixed the problems, this would have been great for their ultimate growth in the TV sector. But by doing what they did, it has guaranteed failure in the marketplace.

Have had the MD5880 for 2 years, works great NOW But on my second bulb which I bought from HP direct in Jan 2007, colors on HD oranges and reds in the faces would show blured on the screen. This happened after 30-60 minutes after warmup.

I checked the fan and put another fan to help, it did not help.

Suddenly the faces would change from red to orange or vice versa over the face of people, this was in HD on ABC Dancing with the Stars. The brillance was fine as it maybe had less than 2000 hours.

So last nite changed the lamp to the origional lamp that came with the set, worked great, on many hours.

Wonder if this a problem with the lamp? Wonder why the filiment would be bright and the Reds started to disappear. Maybe the line went below 110 volts.

Has anybody had similar problems.

PS Travis at ruletrule says he has them at $250. Can he be trusted?

I bought a lamp from him and I'm completely satisfied.
I had good luck with Travis too.

Your problem does not sound like a lamp problem. I can't see how a bad lamp would change the color of people's faces.

You only mentioned that this happened with Dancing with the Stars. Could it have been a problem with the broadcast?

No it was on any HD signal from cable, many channels and using OTA from my attic antenna, same problem, SD was better.

It got soo bad on Dancing, we almost shut it off.

Do you remember with the OLD CRT TV's as they got old the reds were affected first. At one time I used a transformer ( you could buy them) to increase the filiment voltage that helped the cathode emit more electrons, this helped for a few more years,

I may put the old bulb back .

Hi - Got my HP MD6580n back in early 06 and haven't had any issues with it until tonight when I noticed 2 parallel lines of purple dots (they look like purple : symbols) running vertically through the center of the screen up and down the entire width of the screen. They only show up when the background is black and are invisible in bright scenes.

A search of this thread and the net reveals a dreaded horizontal purple line, but I couldn't find anything on parallel vertical purple lines/dots. Thoughts?

I am out of warranty, but thankfully purchased using my Amex and am eligible for their Buyer's Assurance coverage. Does this sound like a light engine issue? If so, I get the impression a replacement part is not available. Anyone file an Amex claim and have the engine not be available? It looks to me in such a case the purchase price is refunded - is that right?

Thanks,

-db

db -

I just received the full reimbursement of the purchase price from amex on my 5880n that seems to have a light engine and/or power supply problem - in my case the tv would just cycle and never come on.

The tech that came out simply looked at the tv and called into hp support... together they came up with most likely light engine, but also possibly power supply.

It took a little over 2 weeks for the process, but the amex people were extremely helpful and understanding. They will want you to have a repair estimate performed - the compusa tech that hp uses costs $250 though.
Light engines are available, but cost $2099.00 as quoted on their Web site, which causes an automatic rejection of repair. I just received a new Samsung to replace my MD5880n. Now I am trying to figure out what to do with my white elephant occupying valuable space in my house. HP has been very unkind to those that supported them.
