You're probably just trolling, but it has been my experience that the women that work the phones for HP support are much better than the men working there. Your mileage may vary.

I've done the master reset a few times, and it did not reset the firmware for me. Well, I don't think it did--I didn't specifically check, but I didn't notice the lack of discrete power remote codes, which were only available after I upgraded the firmware to D36, I believe.

On our sets, this would also be the side that has the bulb on it.

Anyway, are those of you that are buying fans to reduce posterization using a PC style fan (if so, what power source do you use) or just a small general home fan. If you have any pics of your setup, I would love to see it. My posterization is starting to get very noticeable and I am going to do something soon.

Hi Jim, bulb side, room fan. Don't think it matters much which side. Just need to move a little more air thru the TV. Your mileage may vary...

Thanks Ron. I just got this beautiful fan from Radio Shack that also comes with a clip style stand that I attached to my tv stand. Hopefully it will be $7.49 well spent.

Be sure to start by lowering CWI. See previous posts if that doesn't mean anything to you.

Hi there,

I am starting to see the purple band up top, but it is not very distracting at the moment. I may be experiencing some HDMI issues - getting some black screens after switching channels, and difficulty changing from format to format ( eg. 720P to 108oi). Although, these issues may be due to my new DirecTV receiver HR21-700....so time will tell.

Based upon what I am reading, if I place a fan on either side of unit, this may help alleviate some of these symptoms? Wonder why a heat issue would just start to occur. What else can we do?

Thanks.

Starting to see the exact same things. Just recently starting having the black screen issues when changing sources/resolutions as well. Have to unplug the TV to get it to respond again. I have the same devices on the TV I have always had, so I do not think it is your DirectTV box.

I also have the purple line, but cannot see it most times.

I have already started researching new TV's. The HP is nice, but I have the feeling it is about to go south on me. On my next TV purchase I will get an extended warranty.

FWIW, extended warranties are terrible deals. Yes, in the case of this TV we would all be better off with one, but this is generally not the case. Unfortunately, the failure rate on this TV over 3 years has to be around 50% or more. Obviously HP and its resellers didn't know this at the time of production or they wouldn't have even offered the extended warranties. Electronics companies profits are primarily made up of extended warranties (see attached chart from sep. 2006 as an example). Since they overcharge for these extended warranties, if the ~$2K you are going to lose if your next tv fails isn't going to ruin your life, stay out of the extended warranty game.

The same logic can be applied to things like health insurance as well. The big differences are that often times an employer is paying part of the cost and the worst case scenario is a lot worse than the ~$2K of losing a new tv. The downside to a bad medical situation could be millions of dollars, which would be financially disastrous to most of us. Basically, if you can afford the downside and you don't have special information that the product is more likely to fail than the manufacturer/reseller thinks, you will be better off in the long-run without the extended warranties.

Why do you say this? Do you have any actual stats on the failure rate of the HP DLPs?

A little update on my situation. The fan has certainly greatly reduced the heat on of that part of the set. What was previously uncomfortably hot to touch is now downright cool. On the low setting the fan isn't too loud and not noticeable to me with the sound on. It is certainly quieter than my xbox 360.

Has it helped posterization? I think so. It takes longer for any posterization to appear. Does anyone have any documentation to accompany the service menu where you adjust the CWI? I have the service manual, but it doesn't mention any of these settings in there. Just curious about the setting other than CWI.

As others have noted before, I think the tv's poor handling of the heat generated by the the bulb and other components is root cause of 90% of people's problems. Although the excess heat is not bad enough to kill the set right away, over time it wears down many of the components. Through normal use, these problems don't appear right away, but do happen to many of us over time.

No. This is my own speculation. This tv hasn't even been out three years yet.

It is just my guess based on the fact that even people on here who had a perfectly a functioning tv for a year or more, seemed to run into problems as they owned the tv for about two years. I suppose it would also depend on how you define failure as well. Sorry if I misled you...

Hello,

I bought a small fan and placed it on the left rear side of the unit (bulb side) and we shall see what occurs.

Like I said, I have the beginnings of the purple band at the top. How long after one sees the purple band, does the posterization occur? I am lucky NOT to have that yet.

Maybe it would make sense to draw air from the back rather than blow air into the vent area?

Any more thoughts on this whole issue?
I haven't had any issues yet with my HP, but I was thinking about adding some air flow just as an insurance policy. My HP sits on a stand that is actually over a heating / cooling vent. So in the winter it probably sees some additional heat, although I'm sure the stand tends to deflect the air away quite a bit. The summer would tend to have a cooling benefit.

Anyone try to utilize a USB powered cooling fan? I don't think I'd plug into the HP, but I guess that's an option. Though I would be interested to see if anyone has done this.I was thinking about using the cable box or PC to plug the USB fan in.

For those that purchased the extended warranty...that was a good call. I had decided to cancel mine to save on the cost of the original purchase. I'm seriously thinking about selling my 6580n before any issues start showing up.

Never buy HP again, not printers ,TV or cameras.

Remove the back cover and open up the fan fibre enclosure, then put the fan real close to the enclosure so it directs into the enclosure and helps the fan out.

Mine works almost perfectly over MANY hours. have been waiting for the new LCD units introduced at CES, like Toshiba Regza 52xf550, Sharp 52se94u, Samsung 52a650 or 750t or Sony KDL-52w4100 or V4100.

They will be available in next few months.

Does it matter which firmware is showing registered on TV. I installed D36 then a few months later D29+. Do I need ot over write D29+ with D36?

I've read all the comments about the cooling fan option with interest. I've had the HP 65 incher for a bit more than 2 years and it has run without a hitch. I even bought the extended warranty "just in case." As for the fan, I remember reading somewhere (not in this forum) that you want the fan to move the air from the inside to the outside and have cooler air sucked in from vents or whatnot. The reasoning being that you create what is essentially a "convection oven affect" it you blow the air in and that would raise temps. Don't know it that's valid, but I figure when I add the extra fan, it will suck the hot air out and pull in cooler air.

No problem so far and I recently removed the back vented shroud and black cardboard air flow pieces from the various heat sinks on all components. The heat sinks on the power supply module were extremely hot and now with the fan blowing on them, are mildly warm.

I strongly feel that HP was very shortsighted in heat control in these units. I construct PC's for a living and know the effects that heat has on the main motherboard and the smaller card motherboards.

I did take care to not place fan blowing on the exhaust vent for the bulb but the air flowing over the power module does to a certain extent supply some air to the bulb cooling fan.

Is there a programable remote available yet to work with this TV and other devices? How come HD cable box will only work in HDMI 2 input and not HDMI 1? TV is working great. Just some questions to things I have come across while using TV.

I had my purple line issue for a few months before I finally got around to reporting it. Didn't seem to get any worse with time. I never had any posterization with that light engine (or any other problems, for that matter), so I'm not sure if the two are related.

(The first time I saw any posterization was after the purple-line light engine was replaced. The engine they replaced it with went bad the day after the replacement, and that's when I first saw the posterization. So, in my experience, I have no evidence to support the purple-line turning into anything worse. Doesn't mean it won't, though.)

I have a Harmony remote (550, I think) which works great. Make sure you have the latest firmware on your TV to ensure you have discrete power on/off codes, but otherwise you shouldn't have any issues.

That being said, I've had my Harmony for almost two years now and the buttons are starting to wear out. I have to push some of them (play and pause, especially) at very particular angles for it to register. Frustrating, but considering I've had it for a while now and toss it around on occasion probably not surprising.
I would check out the Harmony One that is coming out soon. I love my Harmony 880, but this might even be better.

Also, I don't think the purple line and posterization are related.

Hi there,

thanks for the info.

So does anyone know why the purple line develops? Will it get larger over time?

It is funny what we can live with to get a great picture! minus one purple line...

Has anyone used Joe Kane Digital Video Essentials Calibration Tool? Wondering if there is any benefit to purchasing? Sells for about $ 35.00. Wondering if I should get and calibrate my 6580n

It's behind the screen, in the middle horizontally and towards the bottom vertically.

I have had the HP Pavillion md5880n for a little over a year now (~16 months) and never had a single problem with it. I average about 5 hours of viewing time per day on this HDTV. Yesterday morning I turned on the TV and it was normal as usual. I went to work and when I got back that night I turned on the TV to find a little surprise. The entire right side of the screen is pitch black.

Example #1: While watching a show.

Example #2: Even the menu is cut off.

As you can see in the examples above, it's as if the screen is perfectly cut in half and the right side is entirely black. From the first day I received the TV until now I have never experienced a single audio or video problem.

Has anyone else had this issue or does any one know what the problem might be? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I know this was a month ago so someone probably answered already but this is a failed light engine.

It's a few pages back, but I've been having trouble with my MD6580n and now I may have to replace it entirely. I've been searching other threads, and it looks like in the 65" size the only affordable choice is a DLP set, but RP sets seem to be on a downward trend in popularity. Nonetheless, I do not want a smaller TV.

So, since other owners of MD5880/6580 sets may have faced this challenge, what is the next best bet? The way I see it, it looks like Samsung and Mitsubishi are the only remaining players (Toshiba has sets, but looks to be exiting the market).

Things I like about the HP that I'd want in another set include: 1080p over HDMI for HTPC, True 1:1 pixel mapping (not no overscan, but rather true 1:1 - see attached test pattern), and of course a killer picture. 1080p24 would be nice, but I'm not sure there are any true 1080p24 sets (some can accept the signal, but convert to 60 internally I believe).

Thanks,
