Yes, that was who was the quadrapelic. Of course, the man in the mask was C. Thomas Howell. His name was in the credits but I didn't remember seeing him in the episode. I wasn't sure if that final scene was a dream or was real. If it is real, I don't know how Hotch could survive.

Well, has his contract been renewed for next season?

I remember now...it was the Boston Reaper.

Sheesh. Here's hoping he's back next year.

The episode was probably based on this:

Therefore the Canadian conection....

Caught up on my episodes due to the WS.. good luck to Morgan as the new team leader.. spooky eppy with the eyes..
I'm not sure where they are going with the Morgan as team leader thing. Rossi would have been a more natural choice, since he is supposedly the star of the show. Note that Hotch still is in the center of the group photo during the title sequence.
Seems to me I read something about a CM spinoff, this manager thing may be a vehicle for Morgan to move to the new show.

The way I read it, Rossi isn't there to be the boss, he had been retired but came back because he wanted to solve an old case, I don't think he wants to be the boss.

This was one of the most brutal and heart wrenching episodes that I have ever seen on tv.

I don't consider myself a wuss, but I had tears streaming down my face at the end. Did I just say that? I guess I did.

Brutal.
A brilliant performance by Hotch!! should be nominated for an Emmy..though the wife was gonna be let go ..A brutal episode to watch, from beginning to end..Those of you who missed it, try to catch the episode on one of the sites..I have been watching CM for years, never seen an episode as riveting as this one..
I had this recorded and just watched it now. The episode had me on edge the whole time. Great episode.
I didn't watch the show until a few minutes ago. I didn't read this thread because of any spoilers. Believe me, one of the best episodes of CM ever!!! I was not let down.
Agreed. Also, on the subject of heart-wrenching performances, Mandy Patinkin (remember him from Criminal Minds) put forth an excellent performance on a recent episode of Three Rivers.
My friend told me to check out Three Rivers and it was the episode that the above poster mentioned.. Another great acting job by Mandy..to play a man on a respirator with ALS was a terrific performance..
Sometimes CM is unrelentingly brutal and I take a few weeks off. I've watched the last 5 or 6, they didn't go overboard, stayed with the formula, just good tense drama. Last night's was overboard, but brilliant. It gave me some bad carryover feelings and I had trouble sleeping...could have been the nicotine patch , but I doubt it.
I agree with what seems to be the consensus that last week's Criminal Minds was brilliant. Its darkness reminded me of the seasons starring Mandy Patinkin. I stuck with the show even after Patinkin's departure because of its darkness and generally good writing. The Reaper character was nearly perfect in every way. The guy was double distilled brilliance and evil. The talented C. Thomas Howell did a great job with a wonderfully written role, portraying one of the most hair raising monsters I have ever seen on television. As usual, Thomas Gibson as the driven but sad Agent Hotchner, was terrific. Last week's episode, was special. It will remain with me for awhile. What a gut wrenching story!

So I guess it was all part of the plan for Hotch to step down? It would make him look weak to the killer.. He should be back leading the Unit next week..

That may have been the (his) plan, but with the outcome last week, I'd say a leave of absence and some soul searching are called for with the Hoch character. I doubt even the fictional FBI on this show would let him back on the team immediately.

It seemed to me that when Erin Strauss completed her investigation of Hotch's conduct, she pretty much gave him a clean bill of health. Add to this that the source of Hotch's previous conflict, The Reaper, is now dead, it seems at least possible and maybe even likely that Hotch will be in charge once Again.

nope

12/9/2009 "The Slave of Duty"
When Hotchner takes a leave of absence from the BAU, the team must regroup to solve a home invasion.

Yeah, the internal logic of the show requires that the character regroup. However, unless Gibson is leaving, then I'm pretty sure he comes back to lead the team.

The parts with Hotch dealing with everything were good - the case was by the numbers.
Another excellent episode tonight! Anybody know when we get to meet the spinoff cast?
I initially heard it is episode 18 of this season, which is at least 3 weeks from tonight. I'd have to check the schedule.
I m also eagerly waiting for criminal minds new seasons and that is one of my favorite tv show.
Wise to air this very important episode after a month off? Maybe not, but nevertheless...

Let's see how this goes, folks. Forest Whitaker, the confirmed lead of the Criminal Minds spin-off (tentatively titled Minds 2.0), is set to make his first foray into the Criminal Minds universe on the upcoming episode of the CBS show next month.

I have always enjoyed the creepy serial killers, too. Also, the show is often very dark. You never really know where it will go. This was particularly true during Mandy Patinkin's run on the show.

I like Forrest Whitaker. He has a lot of range and might be very good if the writers give him things that will showcase his talent. He plays creepy pretty well himself, as he proved in his Oscar winning performance as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.
