I have 2 pairs of AS B1 and the matching AS-C1. I've really been enjoying them for a few years now....Recently I've been getting the upgrade bug. Is there anything that can match it in quality but smaller in size ?
I'm running my B1's with a sub and I'm crossing them over at 120hz. Is this to high ?...it's sounds good to me.

Well that's up to you my friend. It's not going to hurt anything as long as your sub is rated to go to 120Hz, wich I'm certain it is. The only problem with a xover this high is that you'll probably hear dialogue from your subwoofer.

I played with different xover for my movie setup and preffered the 80Hz setting as I discovered what "subwoofer localisation" meant when xovered higher. And that's particularly annoying if your subs are not in your front soundstage.

I personally would cross it at 80Hz if it's for movies or 100Hz if it's part of a 2.1 setup (just my preference) as your B1's are rated to go down to 60Hz.

cheers.

Thanks....my sub is placed in the front sound stage. It's a velodyne cht-10. They seem to blend in perfectly.

I just got a new TV and my wife is wanting it wall mounted. Her new plan is to reclaim floor space and mentioned going with wall mounted speakers. She's pretty much said to get something different, which I read as upgrade.

Before I go down that path, what do you think my speakers are worth? I have the following:

2x F2.2
1x C1.2
2x R1.2

Excellent condition.
Let me know what you want for the R1.2's..

Nice to see a few people are still enjoying their Athena speakers. I've had mine for about 4 years and still going strong.

My setup:
Front: Athena AS-F1.2, xover @ 60Hz
Center: Athena WS-60, xover @ 80Hz
Rears: Athena Point-5 Satellites, xover @ 80Hz
Sub: Athena AS-P6000 12"
Receiver: Harman/Kardon 3600

I was using the center channel from the Point-5 system, but replaced it with the much slimmer WS-60 when saw one on sale a few years back.

- Toshiba 55", Harman/Kardon 3600, custom HTPC and Athena AS-F1.2/WS-60

The placement isn't optimal but gotta stay within the wife's tolerances.

- Left front and sub being (partially) blocked by a couch.

In terms of bang for buck (especially for the amount I paid for mine), these speakers are hard to beat. Unfortunately, Athena speakers are no longer available and the company itself is basically non-existent. Damn you Klipsch!!!

That said, I've picked a pair of Energy RC-70 that might replace the AS-F1.2. Good idea?

setup looks nice. That WS-60 isn't going to match very well with your RC-70s though.

any current or previous owners ever upgrade their C1 to a different brand to match the F2s?
I think the only other brand that has an outside shot of matching is Energy.

same situation. I have F2s in the front and the C1 isn't up to the task. I've been checking my local classified ads everyday to find a couple of F1 to replace the center.

You should get the craigslist app if you have a smartphone. Put in athena in the search and it will bring back any matches when they are posted. Saves time at the computer checking for them all the time.

I'd get a floor stander if they are available and can fit, but the bookshelves (as-b1) are a near perfect match if you need something smaller. Those can be found a bit easier.

If you had the craigslist app you would see my Athena speakers pop up for sale. Now that I got my TV wall mounted I need to move on from my floor standing towers to get the WAF back on track.

thanks guys. For a reason or another, in these parts of the world, hardly anybody uses craigslist. It's a Kijiji kind of place I guess. They probably have an app that is similar though, I'll check it out. I was able to find 2 F2, 2 F1, 2 R1, several C1 and B1 in the past year, all within a few hours of drive, so I'm sure it's a question of time.

That's what I plan to do when I find a F1, wall mount my tv (40 inches of so) and put the F1 under the tv. Couple of audio rack on each side for the equipment and voila, all set. My wife is wonderful. I sold my Pio 921 and purchased a Denon 2311 and while waiting for my Denon, she was so put off by the tv speakers, she wanted me to go buy a receiver for a few days until I get mine.

I have someone selling some athena as-f2 speakers for $250 for the pair, I wanted to get thoughts on the quality of speakers and price? I have been looking at Polk 70's Energy 70 etc.
The f2's are great speakers. Try and look up some old reviews of them. Great value for the money.

$250/pr is a great price for those speakers. What would you be powering them with?

Which Energy 70 speakers? CF-70 or RC-70?
I will be powering with Pioneer 1021.

I had been looking at Energy CF-70, and Polk Monitor 70's

What type of center channel should I pair with something like these if I use the for HT as well as music. Or are they more of a music only type set?

Also... Would these suffice without a sub or would one need needed?

I ran mine with a used paradigm monitor series center for a while and was surprised how well it matched up with the as-b1's. The as-f1's are about a spot on timbre match with the b1's so you may have a look for those also. The matching center (yes I bought the center channel too) didn't match exactly.
The seller was willing to drop his price to $200 for the pair, seems like a great deal. Would I be missing out not getting the Polk 70's for $100 more?

Sounds like the F2's center could be a pain in finding and matching

Do you think my 1021 would have enough power for them?

No doubt that it would be easier to go with Polks as they are still being manufactured.

it doesn't need to be the AS-C1 center. In fact, I recommend finding a couple of AS-B1 or AS-B2 bookshelves and use one for your center. They are a little easier to find and will do the same if not better job then the C1.

No doubt whatsoever. As a matter of fact, you will have more than you really need (depending on the size of your room) as the F2s are very sensitive at 93db, so yes, the 1021 will have enough juice. The whole Athena Audition line are very sensitive.

P.S. at $200, I would by them myself

Thanks, Great information!

Am i looking at similar sound quality (or better) with the Athena's? (as opposed to the polk 70's)?

WARNING!! the following answer may be bias...

I had both at the same time, I had purchased the Athenas and then like you was wondering. I bought a whole set of Polks monitor series and ended up returning the Poks. Nothing wrong with Polks but I prefered the Athenas. To me, the sound had more "body" if you will.

For the center, there's nothing wrong per say for the AS-C1 (the matching center) but like many other Athena owners with F2 in the front, they are so good that the dedicated center as a had time keeping up. So if you buy the
F2, it gives you more flexibility. You can add a C1 or a B1 or B2 or, like I'm going to do as soon as I find some, another F2 or F1 for your center.
I don't this an F2 will fit on my mantle as a center so B1 or B2 it is. Sounds like I need to pull the trigger. too good a deal to pass up.

Now thoughts on a sub to match?

I don't think my energy take classic sub will do the trick. Been eyeing the Klipsch RW 12d but am willing to go another direction

the Klipsch gets great reviews here. I had 2 Bic F12 and they are really good with HT. I ordered 2 Premier Acoustic AP-120 which also gets great review. All of those subs can be ad for sub $200 in the States. The Polk Audio PSW505 is also a great contender.

Or you can go with ID subs, HSU, Epik, Rythmik etc...
Well I picked up the Athena F2's last night and they are in pristine condition. I haven't had a chance to try them out yet but looking forward to it.

So now I am looking to try and find a center channel. I looked on ebay and have found AS-B2.2 pair. Is there a difference in audition series and audition series 2?

Also thoughts on what a pair of these should run? Rather not overpay if I can help it
post #2339 of 2494
Only in the color of the driver.

The original Audition series had black drivers while the Audition Series 2 has silver drivers. The original F2 was about 6 lbs heaver than the F2.2. But all accounts said they sound the same.

You can see the pictures and descriptions on the Athena website.

Gotcha, I just saw that on their website. The ebay seller is starting bids a basically $75 with shipping for a pair of AS-B2.2's. Not sure if this is a decent deal or not. ... And I just wanted to make sure they would match with the F2's (series 1) I just bought
