It's not to say it might not be so, but I can't imagine how/why by just removing a cover would damage a input.
Note everyone... NEW HDMI port RESET INFO by Cesar Maciel at bottom!!!!. maybe a way to rest HDMI port WITHOUT a service remote.
VideoBruce,
There are several posts referring to some kind of anti-tamper sensor.
There is a mention in the WARING sections of the Z and Q series owners manuals on page7, section12 which says:
This television has a DIGITAL-IN terminal. Opening up the rear of the cabinet will violate the copyright of the program or software shown on the television. Please do not open the rear cabinet.
tvshopper had his light engine replaced, after which the HDMI was required a reset.

Brett posted that his set had been powered up during a ballast replacement with the back cover off, and the HDMI port being disabled. That the tech had to order a special service remote.

Anonymous posted he had removed the back of his set to "look under the hood", the tech asking him if had every had the back off.

Frank Statton was having a problem with his HDMI input (black screen), the "tech": telling him that if the back had been off, it triggers a sensor that disables the HDMI port.

In this post
Mr Statton mentions a remote had come in, it being ordered as the tech did not have the service remote. Tech ordered a LP20873-009B Remocon Unit (replaces LP20873-009A) http://forum.ecoustics.com/cgi-bin/b...243#POST459243
In this post Mr Statton says he had a HDMI board failure...
Him saying the tech tried to reset the HDMI board by setting the remote code to 03-C6, then... to reset the HDMI, hit the number (3). In his case a board was needed, but that's the rest code the tech used. He said he board would rest, but then it would turn back off after a second or two... so they order a "DVI Module (HDMI board?)

In this post Mr Statton is referring to a piece of "yellow tape" covering an optical sensor on the LEFT side.
http://forum.ecoustics.com/cgi-bin/b...598#POST485598
Here he says him and the tech pulled apart the HDMI unit to try to find some type of sensor, but could not find... Mr Statton saying the yellow tape on the right side now, and now he;s not sure if the tape is covering a sensor, but is afraid tot remove the tape to check.
http://forum.ecoustics.com/cgi-bin/b...843#POST488843Cesar Maciel posted his HDMI port being disabled because of opening the tv AND more importantly a RESET procedure NOT requiring a SERVICE REMOTE, so I will repost his entrie post.: http://forum.ecoustics.com/cgi-bin/b...258#POST500258
"I had the problem with the HDMI port becoming disabled because of opening the TV. Called Best Buy (warranty) and explained to the guy that I needed the reset operation. He informed about needing the service remote control, and said he would call JVC and check the procedure.
He called me later today with a procedure to reset it, using the TV remote control.
Turn the TV on, and enter de Service Menu. Select 2 for Self Check. Then turn the TV off, and after the fan turns off, unplug the power cord. Reconnect the power cord, turn the TV on, and the HDMI port is reenabled.
I tried the procedure and it worked fine. I left the power cord disconnected for 30 sec before reconnecting.
Regards
Cesar"
Got to run... I'm tired after typing up all the above. Hopefully all this HDMI anti-tamper sensor mess is a bunch of BS... That there really isn't a sensor, and that the HDMI rest can be done WITHOUT a service remote.
