Just what's inside a 'G' series JVC D-ILA? - Page 4

I have a 61g787, and am having the same problem with not being able to switch through the registers to find my bulb usage. If you have the register up and then hit sleep and display, it will switch the letter of the register, so I can get to the D000, but channel up/down does nothing, can't seem to figure out how to get to D070...any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I found the post with the instructions how to check lamp life. When I press the display/video status keys on my remote, nothing happens (did set the sleep time to 0). Do I need to have a certain input selected? I tried turning off the cable bos and switching input mode to video 1,2, etc., but still nothing. What the heck am I missing?

TIA for any assistance!

Thanks for the welcome and the quick response.

If you're referring to the 'How to enter Service Mode' attachment (4.5.1), I followed the steps, including checking the switch positions on the remote. I don't get any menu displayed tho, only a blank screen. That's why I wondered if I was missing some other step like switching something else first?

Just as FYI...I'm receiving the 'Lamp needs replacing' message. I'm on my second lamp, guess it's been in use about 15 months now (first one blew in 3 months). I do have a spare replacement that I got from JVC, but out of curiosity, I'd like to know the hour count on the current one before it totally dies.

I can't find a "service Menu" on my HD-ILA remote? Yet my Digital-In (HDMI) connection is not working either

You won't.
What's hooked up to that input?

Great job searching for this older thread and welcome to the forums.

Our 52Z585 has been great for four years, but suddenly developed a problem with the picture - it's as though the gain has been pushed (sorry, I don't speak techno) and it's distorted.

The diagnostic shows:
Sync M: OK S: NG
TUN: NG
RGB: NG
(all others are OK)

Would adjusting the RGB (I've read the posts on how to access the service menu) correct the picture?

Any experience/help is appreciated - I'd really rather not replace it right now!

Thanks!

Post a screen shot when you can.
Doesn't sound like any tweaking would do any good.
Hi Videobruce - I can't post a url to the picture due to board rules, so here's post #2.

The above will show a screen shot of the image seen on the TV. Back in the later 50s & early 60s I use to fix tube-type TVs...the image we get from this HDTV reminds me of the old video gain being turned-up too high. A 2nd point - the screen images generated (menus, etc) by this TV appear fine. But signals inputted from the DVD player or satellite dish box render this image that appears to be over-gain'd.

Thanks for any help you can give us...I have looked around the internet, but have not found anything, yet. Local TV repair shops approached this TV with a burned-out projector bulb (a few months after we bought it) as if they had NO idea where to start, and I did not want to have to pay for them to learn with my TV. I have no confidence in them at all.

Wow that is a bad image. Is this over HDMI? If so, I have HDMI handshake issues where my image will appear green from my HTPC via a DVI to HDMI cable. I fix it by selecting another valid HDMI source on my HDMI switch box then switch back and the it is fine again. It happens every time my receiver OSD changes the resolution to 480i to display its menu the returns to the PC 1080i display.

Have you connecting with component video cables and see how the image looks? Have you tried another HDMI cable? Have your tried to unplug and re-plugin the HDMI cable?
We're not using HDMI, but using the component cables for connection. Thanks for the suggestions - any more ideas?

What inputs are you using?
Have you tried composite or S-video?

I would say one of the video processing boards took a dump. At any rate, that isn't something you could 'tweak' out. I'm sure you would agree, when a sudden change occurs, it isn't a adjustment that went out.

Replace it with a Sammy LED driven RPTV.
Haven't tried S-video yet, but we have been using the composite (I thought it was component) cables. Agree that the sudden change didn't indicate a minor adjustment, but we were hoping to wring out a little more life some way. The local service shop tech was less than impressive when he was called out one time - he had never seen our model, and didn't know where to start. (I think this was the warranty bulb change - we've been doing our own since then).

One of us has already started shopping LED sets - any particular model you recommend?

Try a s-video input, the component input and a HDMI input (even if you have to borrow another device to do so) and report back.
Try doing a full service menu reset. Also, unplug the set for a few hours.

There are two threads (one for each size). Why they haven't been combined is beyond me. This is the largest;
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1029686

No color wheel,
No lamp to replace,
Lowest current comsumption of ANY of the larger screen sizes,
3rd generation LED driven model,
Best bang for the buck (size vs price).

I was orginally going to go with a D-ILA, but because of all the problems with these LCoS sets (especially Phoney) and the lack of input flexibility (one of the stingiest) I wound up with a Mits.

Is it the Mitsubishi Laservue?

No way. $7k for a RPTV? I don't think so. Besides, it's only a 1st generation model.
Besides, it's way too large for for the viewing distance (and the room).
The other one (him) is the shopper!

Actually, for us the 61" samsung is too big - he initially came home with a ~62" JVC, and I couldn't stand it. I'm not much of a decorator, but it totally dominated the living room, and it was a big room with high ceilings. It was out of scale!

We've been very happy with the 52" (I could live with smaller), so will stick to around that size. I think he'll try the experiments you recommended, but we had already done the reset and unplug thing.

Such a shame, since we're snowed in, and it would be nice to be able to watch movies on the big tv. Will have to limp along on the older one for now. (Oh, the humanity - it's only a 30" )

No offense, but that sounds as a typical female comment. "It's too big."

How far from the TV do you sit? This isn't your fathers TV, all the rules for watching analog TV are now out the window. Forget room size. It's viewing distance that is what's important.

Three times screen height is not out of the norm. A 56" 16x9 set has a height of only 28". Sitting 8' away is not too close (when it is a HD program).
{Husband behind "She Who Must Be Obeyed"} I agree that that sounds like a female...how could there be a TV "too big?"...but truly, even in the big room that the 62" TV sat - the TV seemed TOO BIG...I traded down in size to the 52" and was happier with this size (this thought is truly & independently my own}.

And now it seems I'm being poked in the butt to have to replace this dead JVC rear-project set...with another approx. 52" set - likely a LCD flat-screen...but so far the best rated sets (Samsung, Sony...) complain of too much screen glare...soooo, I'm still considering...??...
check this out - not sure it does us any good, but if we can get something out of the "free in-home service", it's worth a try!

The S-video cable experiment didn't work (dang).

thanks again!

ETA - the recall is a "corrective action" (apparently recall is a bad word), and the local dealer is supposed to come out and replace a board. That may or may not address our problem, but we also discovered that the unit is still under extended warranty, so there may be some joy in that. Of course, that's a different local dealer, and we'll have the corrective action done first.
Note that when entering the service menu, you have to move very quickly after hitting sleep timer, pressing display and then video status while holding down display. It took me several tries to get there. You'll see a green menu with 3 choices. Press 4 anyway. Follow the directions posted here previously.

Hello stranger.

Gee, nice thread.
Thanks for the advice, Navychop - it reminded me to update the rest of the story here.

As it turned out, one place didn't want to do the corrective action, since they said we weren't having that problem.

So we moved on to the warranty - a GE Zurich extended warranty. I got the name of the authorized local service shop, sent them the picture I posted here via email, and they diagnosed a bad light engine, which they said was a very expensive thing to fix.

We had a phone message from the service shop yesterday that said they had been notified that the warranty holder was going to exchange our tv (we believe from reading the warranty that the exchange will be for a new set).

In the meantime, being relatively tv-less, we purchased a new tv (a 52" Samsung), and will use the exchange one, assuming it materializes, to work a complicated deal with my sister in law involving cash and transport somehow to the Tucson area (from Oregon).

The end of the saga is hoving into view!

Please let us know what the replacement is.

BTW, I have a Samsung LCD 52" A650 in my bedroom now. Wife loves it.

Does anyone have a response for finding the lamp hours on the "G" series units? A few people have posted here with the same problem I'm having...

We can enter the service menu, press "4" but then the up or down (or the side to side) arrow keys don't work.

Whats a fella to do?
When you get into the service menu, what do you see. I see 3 items to choose from, mine are in green. When you press 4 what happens, do you see any register values at all? IF you see the register values, is the problem you cannot increment/decrement them.?
I have a 52g786 with remote model RM-C14G
