Yes, I saw the "Midnight Mode" setting, but hadn't had a chance to play with it just yet. That may be the ticket, if there's truly no way to pipe the audio directly to the TV set.

JStew, your idea may work, as well, although I'd imagine I can only synchronize a single audio input source to the HDMI video input, since the TV has no way of knowing if the source is from the DVD or the DBS receiver.

Interesting challenge...and certainly counter-intuitive to the usage of the 702B. But, I can't imagine I'm the *only* person who's ever tried to 'dumb down' their surround system to meet a pragmatic need like this.

Any other advice?

I messed around with mine last night and can't come up with anything else. Like you, I've got an HDTV and there are times when the boss wants to hit the sack before me. I usually go into the "night" mode and it works well for me.

I honestly don't know of any other way. Anything else would just be adding more connections to the back of the TV which defeats the purpose of using the HDMI connection.

Anyone willing to open up their receiver and take some photos? I've been looking to get the receiver, but have held back due to poor internal build quality of the previous generation JVC's. Plus, this could give people an insight as to why this generation of JVC's create so much heat. This would be much appreciated, thanks.

I am thinking about purchasing one of these? Does anyone who ones one have experience with medium end "high current" audiophile receivers (onkyo, denon, hk), and if so, how does the sound quality compare? (The whole "digital amplifier scares me)?

What is the finish on the unit? Ie. plastic? brushed aluminum? What about the silver model?

Thanks.

Hi, I appreciate all the information here. I have had the 402 for about a month. It is wired to schizophrenic 5.1 system. Sounds good but I am not taking advantage of its' full potential. My problem...Cant decide between the Pany 8uk (with an HDMI expansion panel) and the NEC 50 XR5. Any advice on which of these monitors is the best fit for this receiver?

Thanks,

Hi,

I'm looking around for an AV receiver, to run KEF Reference 104.2's as front pair (4 ohm speakers), a KEF KHT9000 as a center speaker (8 ohm), and a pair of Polk f/x500i's (8 ohm) as rear surrounds. (The KEF surrounds didn't fit) (Velodyne sub is powered, of course.) 5.1 for now, but it could become 6.1 or 7.1 ...

I think 'Class-D' makes sense for home amps, but with the as-tested power specs of this 702, I wonder if it will have enough headroom. The 104.2's are notorious for being powerhungry, so is there a way for the 702 to 'pre[post?]-out' the front pair only, after whatever processing, and let my 2-ch Adcom power amp drive those? And if so, does the JVC make the 2 channels of power they'd otherwise use available to the other channels?

Any thoughts as to whether the 702 will be sufficient in general? Because of the physical limitations, it's very difficult to swap equipment in and out for testing.

TIA,
Clay

Don't know enough about the amplifier design to answer your detailed questions, but the following info may affect your decision on the 702B.

In the manual under speaker cautions it says "use speakers with the SPEAKER IMPEDANCE indicated by the speaker terminals (6 ohm to 16 ohms)".

It also says "DO NOT connect more than one speaker to one speaker terminal". This would imply that the amplifier is designed to drive the same impedance at each set of speaker terminals.

In terms of adjustment, this AVR has some dynamic range to balance the output for each of seven speakers by adjusting the the trim (up or down) for each speaker.

So, finally got my JVC hooked up. Kids took over the TV, but got about an hour of uptime. First impressions:

1) The manual REALLY is attrocious
2) Very happy about the sound quality.
3) HDMI HDCP handshake from an HD Tivo = no problem... (phew)

2 problems so far:

- High-pitched squeal coming out of my rear surrounds. Turn the surround to "Off," and it goes away. Going to keep playing around, as I have a feeling it's either a connection or wiring being in vicinity of something problem. Also hooking up new speakers tomorrow (hopefully), so one more variable to check...

- HDMI output from a non-HDMI source looks like a Warhol painting. This is a 480p DVD signal. Component out on same signal is fine. I'm going to plug in the PS2 on component, and see if I get something similar. This is borderline showstopper, but I can live with it if HDMI switching appears ok.

Help needed:

- Anyone know if there is a setting to have an effect setting for non-encoded signals? Meaning, for things in DD, I'd like the receiver on DD. For anything that doesn't have that flag, how about Neo6.

BTW - onecall's "open box" appears to have nothing but a surface scratch that only shows up in direct light
post #129 of 820
Update - the warhol stuff is repeatable, but avoidable. Turns out it comes back every time I switch TV inputs, but the 1st time is a-ok. Weird. Also seems to like a 480i signal over 480p, which doesn't really bother me, as DCDi is probably better than my Pioneer 578 for scaling.
where did everyone go?

Most interested in any insights on the squealing noise from the rear surrounds. The weird colors from the component --> HDMI is somewhat repeatable, but nothing horrendous.

Man, I can't wait to get my new polk hooked up to this thing - have a feeling it's going to shake the room.

Sounds like you got a good deal with onecall's "open box" pricing. Hope you enjoy your 702B and that you find that the "squealing noise" is external to your AVR.
Have you tried running the "test" on each individual speaker? It might help isolate if it is a wiring/connection/speaker issue.

This is my first post to this forum (actually I also posted the same thing on the Yamaha 1600/2600 thread). Anyway, I am currently a law student who will get paid an obscene amount of money this summer and can think of no better way to blow that money than on a home entertainment system. Both the Yamaha 1600/2600 and JVC RX-D702B are very intriguing.

I am curious, however, why there has been little to no comparision of the Yamaha 1600 and the JVC RX-D702B. The JVC is clearly a much smaller unit (due to a digital amp or something), but in terms of HDMI connections and other features it seems similar to the Yammy 1600. The street price of the two units are within $100 of each other.

Can someone please flesh out a discussion of the differences in the two units?

Much Thanks,

Eric

Ok I got my JVC receiver today very nice looking but as mentioned here the manual is WoW unreadable and the diagrams are so confussing you have to be a scientist to get it.

I am trying to hook up the following.

Hooked up my speakers and tested the FM radio all speakers work ok..

Hooked up my DirectTV HDDVR HDMI to HDMI to the DBS/VCR input and can oly see the TV Video when it is switched to VCR IM not sure this is correct probably not can someone help me it was the only way I could get video to the TV .

Hoked up my Denon DVD HDMI to DVD HDMI Works fine (So Far)......

I have no other connections at the moment from either the DVR or DVD do I have to connect the S video & Composites to the JVC also ?

Did i make a mistake in buying the D402B when i couldve gotten this one ? Is the only difference the fact it has 150wpc over 110wpc ?

Certainly a nice receiver anyhow.
Fox - all depends on price. If the power isn't a factor, and you don't want the wireless USB stuff, I say you're fine...

This is my first post. Great information here. I am in the process of putting together my first HT. Once the TV arrives, I will have:

Panny TH-42PWD8UK
JVC D702B
JBL 300.7 speakers
SA 8300HD
Sampo DVE 612(N)
Modded Xbox - running Xbox Media Center

The speakers and the receiver arrived, so I have been watching dvds with the new sound, but the old screen. As I mentioned, this is my first HT and I was blown away by the incredible sound. Now, I feel pretty stupid, because I just realized there is actually no sound coming out of the subwoofer. The bass is still so much better than what I had before that I didn't even notice. I have done every thing I could think of to get the subwoofer to work. It is turned on (set to on, not auto). It is connected to the JVC 702B via the LFE connection. I went into the JVC-702B menu and set SW to on, crossover to 100 MHz, front speakers to small and bass boost on. It still is not working.

What makes me nervous is the LFE connector on the JVC-702B wiggles when I connect the RCA cable to it. It feels a bit like a loose tooth, wiggling slightly up and down when I plug or unplug stuff.

Is it possible that the connector on the receiver is broken? Has anyone else had the same problem?

Can anyone suggest a place I can purchase this from. All site's I've checked seem to be out of stock. Thanks.

One place to start -- does the LFE indicator light on the 702's display when you have an audio input? If not, it's probably a setting buried somewhere in the menu that has to be changed, although it sounds like you got them all. If it is lit, though,, the receiver is trying to output a signal to the sub. By deduction, I'd say it has to be: 1/ sub cable, 2/ sub itself or 3/ the loose 702 output. The cable is easy to check -- try another one. If that's not it, not sure how to determine if it's the sub or the receiver. Maybe someone else has a suggestion.

Any confusion you have about the Owners Manual are understandable and it is easy to use a setting that will lock your subwoofer out.

Not familiar with your speakers, but they must be nice ones if you didn't miss the sub initially. I assume you have a powered sub and that it is connected to SUBWOOFER OUT. Since this is a new set of speakers, you might recheck the speaker manual on settings for the sub. For example, mine has a separate power button and another switch that is OFF, ON or AUTO (shuts down unless there is a signal present). It Also has a GAIN control that could be set to zero.

If everything about the sub is set correctly, you might use the TEST button on the remote (see page 36)for the RX-D702B, which will check each speaker individually using "pink" noise and allow you to adjust the output level for each speaker individually. This should exercise the sub regardless of many settings that might lock out the sub.

Hope, it is a simple problem and not the connector. Service has been a problem for some on the forum, but several of us have not had a hardware problem ----yet.

Hope you got a good one!

Thanks to both of you for the advice. I tried lots of different things tonight and finally got the subwoofer to work after I turned it off and back on again. I am not sure what the problem was, but it may have gotten stuck in standby mode. Anyway, the problem is not with the receiver, which was my biggest concern. Since I didn't notice the problem before, maybe the subwoofer was actually working over the weekend, but not more recently. In any case, it is working now. Thanks again for the help.

Just curious if anyone can confirm whether the Faroudja part performs image processing on HD content on the 702 / 402... The reason I'm asking is that my sat receiver upscales everything to 1080i (or 720P based on my setting), but doesn't do a very good job. The result is 480i quality content presented to the TV w/ 1080i timings. So it would be nice if DCDi was implemented on the 1080i content to reduce jaggies, etc.
The DCDi (Faroudja chip) as far as I know processes ALL video streams out of the JVC D702B. I'm assuming it's the same with the D402B/S. Whether it's 480i or 720p or 1080i, the signals will run through the DCDi chip and be cleaned up (if possible).

I am about to get the 702B and from reading the thread, as with all receivers there is a good and bad. I too plan on using a Comcast HD box. They have boxes that have DVI or HDMI here in Dallas Texas, however, if you want the HDMI you have specifically request it. My question is, anyone using Comcast HD and either DVI/HDMI has the signal worked. There's a lot of talk on this thread of problems between the receiver/cable box/and monitor working hand in hand. BTW my monitor is going to be a Panny AE900.

Here's a good fence-sitting answer for you. I have Comcast in Connecticut. When I first got the 702B back in Nov. my box, an SA 3150HD with DVI, worke3d just fine. Then about 30 days later it stopped working with the box, which I assumed to be a problem with the receiver. I had it exchanged, and the new one cannot get a hand shake with the system over the DVI/HDMI output. A call to Comcast, actually a few calls, got me to an HDMI "expert," who said he believed the problem was a recent update for the software that led to a number of calls about HDMI no longer working through a switching receiver. At first he suggested turning in the SA box for a newer one with HDMI rather than DVI, but then said they both run the same software and that probably wouldn't solve the problem. For now I'm using the component connection, but intend to try the DVI/HDMI again in a week or two, hoping they updated the software again, this time with a version that's HDMI friendly.

So my answer is -- maybe. I don't think the monitor has any impact on whether the signal is able to pass through the receiver successfully.
Regarding the DVI HDMI, I have Comcast in Ohio. My box has a HDMI output but my monitor has a DVI input, so I bought an adapter cable and plugged everything in. But when I first turned on the received and monitor, I got a brief flash of a picture and then no signal. A number of people have seemed to have this issue. So I switched over to the component cables and everything worked and I was upset I wasted money on the new HDMI cable.

I believe it was the next day, I went downstairs, unplugeed the cables, plugged them in again, and everything worked fine. I have no idea what the issue was, but my receiver has been working great for the past month.

And not that it matters, but my monitor is a Samsung.

It's entirely possible that the cable company updated their software when they sent the channel guide programming. That usually occurs overnight. My experience was the exact opposite -- HDMI worked perfectly for a while, then it didn't. Guess I should reconnect the HDMI and see if Comcast has gotten its act together. One reason I haven't bothered is that the picture quality over the component input is fine. Still, I would like to have that component input free for my DVD recorder, which is currently stuck with the S-video input.

Amazingly, i have the same problem, and have tried everything (including turning on and off the sub several times). i have sub-on, have tried every crossover setting, have turned the sub all the way up, etc. when i use the test button i get no noise from the sub. even though your problem went away, did you figure out what caused it? i, too, was suspecting the sub-out jack, but it sounds unlikely.

and, in a related(ish), when i am using a dolby digital dvd i get no sound from my rear speakers (although i do in any other configuration). it doesn't seem to matter what surrond mode i am in. the receiver is detecting the signal because "dolby digital" lights up. all the little red speaker lights are on on the front of the receiver. am i right that for 5.1 the rear/surround speakers should be in the surround outputs, with the rear speakers turned to off in the setup? i'm sorry for asking all this, but the manual pretty much sucks. otherwise, this is one sweet rig. many thanks for any light that can be shed.
