Boston, MA - Verizon - Page 40

Especially at the lower HD channels, like 502-505. Pixelated, sound drops, general mayhem, though it crawled its way up to HBO 899 last night so I missed the end of Bill Maher.

Anything from Verizon on why this is happening? I'm on the northshore.

Was not home last night but my picture has been fine today.

Are you still having problems?

a little bit of interference happening, on 504 toward the end of the 630 news, made me think 60 minutes might have to be in LoDef. But it cleared back up in a few minutes.

Maybe they are working on the equipment lately? Strange.

Sorry to burst your bubble, most folks here still use STB and this is a Science forum. I'm still puzzled though on why this particular subject bothers you so much.

I'm cross posting this from the Boston Comcast thread for all those that are interested:

Talked to the FioS guys at the New England Home Show today and they said that FioS will be available in Chelmsford starting in August. As we know from Bicker's situation, available in Chelmsford doesn't mean it will be available everywhere in Chelmsford in August. It will take another 18 months after that to complete the whole town as they are obligated to do as specified by the contract they signed with the town.

In Attleboro, I've gotten gas next to Verizon trucks 3 times...next time, if there is a next time, I should ask about their wiring status...lol

We're in Andover area, 504-508 have continuing bouts of inteference. Its getting very annoying. Tried to record Law and Order tonight and it wrecked 2 hours of show.

Very annoying.

Any chance equipment could be bad? Or is it more likely something between headquarters and my ONT?

It seems to be a local issue for you. Could be something in your home causing this.

First I would call verizon and ask if anyone else in your area is experiencing any similar problems.

If not, then swap out the box and see if it's still there, if so call for a tech visit.

Let them check your wiring and splitters and so on, they may even suggest a power conditioner which could isolate the interference if something in your home is at fault.

FioS will start being available in Chelmsford later this summer. If I am lucky enough to have it available to me what will my costs be ? Here is what I am looking for:

Triple play bundle - Normal phone, normal internet
Equivalent channels in HD to comcast digital basic + HD DVR, 1 SD box, 1 HD box

Does Verizon have the equivalent of a DTA and if so what is the charge ?

and then how much extra for the next bump up in digital packages ?

Thanks,

Ken

Interesting billing snafu... they didn't charge me for the first month, until afterward. I didn't think much of it until this month... I'm being charged double for everything! I called and they claim that they're just catching up, and that next month's bill will be normal.

Better be....

Tiers may change before summer.
Check the website.

Prime HD is sort of equivalent to Digital starter

Extreme HD is sort of equivalent to Digital starter and digital Preferred and runs $15 more
HD channels not covered by comcast at all include HDNet HDNEt Movies and Smithsonian

Ultimate HD is another $15 and adds Showtime/TMC Epix a movie channel Comcast dosen't CARRY and a number of additional sports channels.

Phone wil lbe POTS distributed over fiber (may change)
West coast feeds of premium channels are included (many in HD)

Although boxes may seem more expensive there is NO extra set charge.

Ken their DTA's are $ 3.99 each, same price as a Cablecard.

The new tiers were just set in January. They won't be changing for another 9 months if not more.

After all these months and IMG upgrades the picture quality on SD channels is still unacceptable.

As compared to what?

Actually they are going to be adjusted on or around April 18th.
One possibility would be a set bundle fee which would include Ultimate HD and ALL THE MOVIE channels not to mention 35/35 internet and the unlimited long distance land line service.

I can't comment on RCN, but I've had both Comcast and FiOS, and in terms of picture quality, there's no significant difference.

I've found that watching SD on an HDTV sucks no matter what.

You're making an assumption based on the end of a promotional date? Get real.

Looks like I may finally have access to FIOS next week. Question on their STB/DVR, are the firewire ports active? Anyone have experience in capturing to a PC from it? I've been using the 6412 and then 3416 from Comcast over several years. Aside from a few hiccups with bad firmware that breaks it, it's worked pretty well. I'm mainly interested in archiving sports events and am aware of the limitations due to 5C copy protection.

The 6416 is the one you want for Firewire. There are a few threads about the 7000 series Firewire ports being completely broken. I am able to capture to DVHS from my 6416 no problem so CapDVHS on the computer should work fine. I actually tried to get a 7000 series box and they sent me another 6416. Good thing, since I didn't know that Firewire wouldn't work!
Hopefully they will move to Cisco boxes soon, with more HD space and native channel resolution.

Verizon has been all around Dracut running fiber the past couple weeks. Anyone have an idea of a timeframe for folks to actually be able to get it?
Anyone having issues with NESN HD/Comcast Sportsnet Boston HD after the rainstorms? Here in Waltham I'm not getting the HD feeds at all. SD is OK, though.

I tried doing the usual reset/unplug/reinitialize dance. FIOS guy on the phone had me try grounding the coax, but no dice. They simply come up as "channel unavailable."

I will probably need the FIOS guy to come by, eh? The rest of my HD/SD channels and internet seem to work just fine.
How does Verizon add a channel like National Geographic Wild (today) on a SD channel? A channel like that screams for HD.

Verizon has been wiring all around Chelmsford since November, they are going to start signing people up in mid August. It will be another 12-18 months after that date that the whole town is wired. Hopefully you will be lucky and be in the first batch.

To me, the important part of the article was the discussion that they would take a break from spending money on the build out and focus on getting the already built out towns to profitability. If you read between the lines a little bit, I think we know what that probably means.

Are you thinking that this will mean price increases for FioS, or are you thinking it might mean more agressive pricing to lure customers away from Comcast ? I think it could go either way.
