And, is it most likely the number of hours on the bulb the reason for the dimming?

That's a lot of hours so dimming is likely.

I have one of the first HLN 61" Samsung's. I've had the color wheel replaced under the extended warranty. I'm still on the same bulb with an extra bulb in the closet.

I brought my Samsung HLP 5063 in June of 2004. Since then I have had two bulbs go bad and the light engine replaced. Luckily, I have the warranty. Other than that, I love the TV.

Same set (October build) with no problems and still running the original lamp. I have an extended warranty that I've never used. I like both the TV and the extended warranty.

I bought my HLP5674W Dec 2005. It's got 5400 hours on it as of two weeks ago, original bulb. Never a problem.

I purchased an HLN5065W in Jan 05 - regretably with no extended warranty. As soon as a year passed I began to have several problems. Dim Picture, Lamps that appeared to fail - but then when the next one failed, I would try the old one and it would work?? Popping noises - and now I have the 3 blinking lights and none of the lamps work. I would try to replace the Ballast - but I think with all of the difficulties (and all I've read about) it would be like putting good money after bad.

I will not be buying a Samsung again. From my own experience and reading the reports on this Forum - I believe they sold there good name by putting out junk.

My HLN is >3 years old and has never had a single problem. I just bought another Samsung (30" picture tube) for the basement.

Contact Samsung and file a complaint, they might help you out.

Did you buy it with a credit card that extends your warranty?

From the numberous replies, it seems that there is a real problem with all of the
Samsuck HLN models. Those who have not have been either lucky or have the extended waranty. I think Samsuck is a good name for the DLP. I will suggest this to customer service.

Strange -- it reads exactly opposite AFAIC: From the low number of replies, it seems that there isn't a real problem with the Samsung HL-N model line. The number and severity of the problems specific members have experienced aren't out-of-line with the standard case for more-than-three-years-old electronics these days.

Are you a troll or something?

The first generations of DLP, LCD, plasma, etc all aren't yet evolved into a mature technology. Just like a car or any other product, you're pretty much screwed when it breaks out of warranty. Want reliability? Drive a Honda. Want a tv to last 10 years, by a tube.

I have a Jan-2006 manufactured Samsung DLP and love it. It does have a loud fan but I'll have it fixed before the warranty expires. I know this TV will not likely last 10 years without eating a color wheel and blowing a few bulbs... no problem!

To All who have trouble with the HLN series DLPs.
I have to apoligish in writting to Samsung. I contacted Customer service about my set, gave them a copy of my original reciept and repair order from a Samsung authorized repaircenter. There response was to upgrade me to a HLS 5087W plus $750. Not a cheap upgrade but considering the repair of close to $1000 for a set that is less than 3 years old, A good Deal. So to Samsung, Thankyou.

I have a HLR4264 purchased Dec. 15/05. All was well up to Nov. 13/06 when the lamp failed. Since then I have been through two more lamps and the ballast has been changed but it is still not working. They have ordered a new DMD board. So far both Samsung & the repair shop have been pretty good. The repair shop in particular has been very good. I am hpoeful this set will be repaired and I will get a reasonable lifespan out of it. If I have another major failure howevr I will exercise the "no lemon" clause in my extended warranty.

I agree. We bought a first gen 50" Samsung DLP a few years ago. We have had the lamp replaced 3 times (twice under warranty) and the color wheel twice within the first year. I now have to turn the stereo volume up to near maximum to overcome the color wheel squeel. I am not going to spend another dime fixing this set.

The set also has a light blemish you can see from some angles - which has been an artifact on our set since the first lamp replacement.

Any idea if Plasma or LCD technology is any more reliable? All I want is an HDTV I can buy and then watch for 10 years without calling for service.

Buy a third generation DLP... you'll have far more reliability than a first generation DLP.

My Sammy's only about 8 months old now, but absolutely no problems.

I'm new to the board and have a sick Samsung HL-P5085W. My set is just over two years old and has about 5000 hours on it. I have replaced the bulb once since owning it (no big deal), but last week the DMD board went south on me. I only purchased a two-year extended warranty which expired a month and a half ago. I called Samsung and they told me to have a service shop confirm that the DMD board has failed. I did, and it has. I faxed Samsung's Executive Customer Repair department copies of my reciept and the service shop's diagnosis.
My question is - what are my chances of getting Samsung to cover all or part the $1700.00 repair bill?
Should I keep after them to stand behind thier product, or start looking for a new TV?

Thanks, KL

We have given Samsung every benefit of the doubt. As some have said very good or great picture; but very poor reliability, and much worse factory service. Our lastest unit is only 6 months old and has been worked on 4 times in the last 7 weeks. It is supposed to be delievered again today, we shall see; but I am not expecting much. We have heard all the promises before.

There are just as many problems with the HLS series - perhaps more.
My understanding is precisely the opposite: That there are far fewer problems with the HL-S series than with prior series.

As a HL-S5086W owner, I must say I agree.
The problem is that Samsung is a leading seller of HDTVs, and one cannot judge the frequency of problems based on isolated reports on the forum. Samsung has many, many sets out there (more than many other brands) and it is impossible to get any idea as to the true numerator and denominator. IMO, reliability is similar across most major brands, and is not worse for Samsung than Mits, Sony, JVC, Toshiba, etc, etc.

As someone in the repair business.

Older Sammies, say 2 model years and older are less prone to failure than their newer models.

Not quite sure how you could say that. I'm sure that Samsung is selling a lot more TVs now then they did 2 years ago. You might be seeing more in number but I bet the percentage isn't any higher.

[b]howdy! i am new to this. i was wondering if anyone has any current info and or advice on the samsung HLS 7178 71" DLP? i am looking at a leftover new one in the box, that is however out of warrantee. the price seems fair, but i am concerned about it being out of warrantee. what are my risk/cost factors with repairs? i found plenty of talk on on the web by people waiting to get one in 2006, but nothing current in 2007 on anyone who's actually owned one for a while. any advice or help appreciated. thanks...
