Recent Rock/Metal DVD-Audio/SACDs? - Page 5

AcousticSounds is overpriced. You can actually get them cheaper and free shipping (>$25) @ Amazon.com. A good place to search for titles though. Search feature for DVD-A in Amazon is not that good though, especially w/ dual discs.

I am bringing up an old thread here but anyone know of some good sources to buy some blu-ray music, SACD, or DVD Audio in metal genre? This isn't a popular music genre since its not pretty lol but I don't see any reason why we can't have high quality death metal.

I recently bought Opeth - Still Life Special Edition which contains a 5.1 mix of the album on a DVD. It sounds awesome and is one of Opeth's best albums.

There is also a Pig Destroyer album called Terrifyer that has a second DVD with a 32 minute song in surround sound. I bought this one also, but I had never heard Pig Destroyer previously. I hated what I listened to of it though.

I know they're not SACDs or a DVD-Audio discs, but they are metal albums in surround sound.

Here are a couple others: http://www.metalinsider.net/geeking-...d-sound-albums

I can't recommend Opeth's Still Life Special Edition enough though. I also own Opeth's Special Edition releases of Watershed and Ghost Reveries, but those two are not anywhere near as heavy and brutal sounding as Still Life. If you've never heard Opeth I recommend Still Life as a great starting point.

I really like Opeth. I will definately have to look into finding this DVD. Where did you buy yours at?

BTW that is a good link, thanks.
I went ahead and ordered 3 albums. Two were Opeth and one was Dimmu Borgir DVD Audio. I bet those will be awesome.

I found all 3 Opeth's from Best Buy, but they are also readily available at Amazon as well.

Where did you get the Dimmu Borgir DVD-Audio disc at? Is it the U.K. PAL edition or is there actually a US release?
Yea it was the UK version I think because it was PAL. I got it on amazon through one of the people that sell through amazon. On the Opeth albums I got stull life and ghost reveries. I looked at best buy.com but I think I found a better deal on Half.com and amazon.

I don't know if Enemy of God by Kreator was mentioned. Again, not hi-rez, but an excellent album, in a strong 5.1 Dolby digital mix. Just looked on Amazon and it looks to be out of print. Get it if you can!

While the mix is not that exciting, the DVD of Iced Earth's civil war epic Gettysburg has the whole 30 minute song in surround as well, along with some bonuses.

Unfortunately, metal has been even less represented than other rock genres in surround, and I doubt it's going to get any better!

Dimmu Borgir Death Cult Armageddon and Nightwish Once DVD-As can both be had at nuclearhell.com. Free shipping too.
Also not dvdA or SACD, but 5.1, is Rush's Snakes and Arrows. They made a small run of these in 5.1 in DD and DTS (I think). I actually got a copy and wasn't impressed, I'll have to give it another try.
On amazon, it is going for $45 new, or around $13 for used. If you are interested, go for the used copies!

First off I want to thank you guys for mentioning the Opeth 5.1 mixes. Didnt know that there had been produced such discs, but I look forward to hearing them, especially Still Life - my favourite

Secondly, I scrolled through the list and found one missing:

Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream 2-disc (cd+dvda)

One of PTs finest!

No-Man, Mixtaped 2-DVD + bonus CD from Burningshed. Lovely 5.1 DTS recording and great music. My favorite was when former member Ben Coleman rejoined the group on Things Change; a powerful song from the equally powerful Flowermouth recording (now that's a release that deserves 5.1 DVD-A treatment, hint, hint!). The second DVD with the biography of No-Man plus videos is a nice bonus. Fascinating bit of history for anyone who discovered No-Man through Porcupine Tree. Orders through Burningshed provide a bonus CD, which is useful for adding these tracks to one's iPod.

Mudvayne - Lost and Found Dual Disc has entire album in Enhanced Stereo according to back of case. Amazon says 5.1 but that may not be accurate.

Does anyone have ANY idea where I can find Audioslave's self-titled Dualdisc from 2002? I've looked EVERYWHERE and I've had no luck. My mother is a librarian and she was able to find a copy in the Library of Congress...a huge help that is.
I wish I had read that Mudvayne DualDisc comment before I bought it off amazon. Oh well.. the price was right. Also, no clue about the Audioslave DualDisc, never even heard of it. Although they do have a Live in Cuba DualDisc.

Another disc some people might not know about: Supposedly, only 5000 Deluxe editions of Muse's "Resistance" were released.. they were numbered. These 5000 numbered editions contain a copy of a 5.1 surround DVD-VIDEO disc that contains Dolby and DTS mixes of the album. For some reason.. they continued producing this Deluxe Edition without this DVD.. makes no sense to me. Luckily, I just bought one of these off eBay last night and it's supposed to be the real deal.. even have some pics. :]

I just ordered Opeth Blackwater Park in the new "Legacy Edition." Includes brand new 5.0 audio mix of the original album by Jens Bogren; A previously unseen documentry "The Making of Blackwater Park" and a previously unreleased bonus track "The Leper Affinity (live). Presented in a hard backed book with new artwork by Travis Smith and liner notes by Mikael Akerfeldt. Ordered directly off of Opeth's website for about $27.00 USD (shipping from the UK). Amazon has it listed but for $35.49.

"The Incident" by Porcupine Tree was released earlier this month on DVD-A.
5.1 Mix really wakes this album up.

Take Care

Thanks BZiggyZ, didn't know there was a new edition. I just placed an order on Amazon.co.uk for $21.02 shipped to the US. Really looking forward to getting this.

Good info, thanks. I canceled my order and got it through Amazon UK. USD exchange rate is a killer.

I just received my copy of Opeth's Black Water Park: Legacy Edition this evening from Amazon UK. The back of the case says the DVD is Region 0 NTSC for those without a multi-region or PAL -> NTSC capable DVD player.

Ooh I need to order Blackwater Park! Love the other Opeth 5.1s

Should be getting Enemy of God soon...mine just shipped.

Here's a great one to add to the list:
Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect Cd/DVD
Not DVD-a but a great album and 5.1 mix. Heavy ala Opeth meets early Genesis prog riffs... Found it at BB and got it on a whim as I'd never heard of the band

Oddly enough I just picked this one up this morning from Best Buy.

I am not familiar with this band, but Anathema is releasing a DVD-A/CD in May.

http://www.burningshed.com/store/kscope/collection/222/

Apparently it is self produced and mixed by Steven Wilson.

Sounds interesting - anyone know this band or heard them recently?

You can find them on myspace. If you like the mellow Steve Wilson stuff, you might dig Anathema. They've got a Pink Floyd / Radiohead kind of vibe.

Thanks, I'll check them out.
