Every year around tax refund season, the wifey asks me, "Isn't it time to upgrade (insert random A/V equipment)?" Seems like I'm always the one holding back a bit, waiting for a good sale or doing some research.

I'll never understand the excuse of "wifey won't let me." It's not like women don't watch/play/enjoy what we buy...and yet, we don't wear their 5,000 pairs of overpriced shoes! (Well, some of us don't anyway.

)
Funny thing is wife my pulled the trigger on the last two HDTVs "We" bought. It was her idea and prices came way down. Trying to explain why I want $3000 for L/R speakers is a whole different story. I am one of the lucky ones where she basically just lets me do what I want, as long as it doesn't require selling her stuff

. She has every right to question a purchase when you can buy something that basically does the same thing for a hell of a lot less. 30 minutes in the HT store demoing speakers and she gets the idea (and she has had her lifetime fill)

.
Talking about HT gear with my wife is like her talking about a pair of boots or jacket that she wants. She gets this look in her eye like she is imagining she is anywhere but talking about HT gear with me. She doesn't care. Just like I don't care about clothing she wants. I would rather talk about anything else, but I do remember the make and model # so if she hasn't picked it up, I have a gift idea.
Some people have less disposable income than others and making a purchase is not easy. $2000 to one person maybe a drop in the bucket, but to another it is a tremendous amount of money. Since this hobby isn't exactly cheap, getting into high end gear can be a long process financially. People have different priorities in life. I just happen to put it very high on my list of importance (as I imagine most on AVS do).
As to your point of "Wifey won't let me", I agree. Years ago when I first lived with my wife (girlfriend then), she would try to pull that crap about money. I would just sit there and point out all of the money she wastes. Expensive Shampoo and Conditioner, Haircuts, her wardrobe, and an amazing ability to just waste money on really dumb things. I then asked her to find an equal amount of money per month that I spend on myself. It wasn't even close

. she backed off and we are both happier understanding what makes each other happy. Hopefully people can get to know their wife well and really try to make her happy. She will return the favor.
