To the Group;
Without being too windy, I build and program computers as a sideline to my profession. TVs, however have always been those monsters out of the closet I don't fully understand. For almost a decade my Sanyo antique has churned out a reasonbly good picture on analogue. Last year I purchased a Toshiba 560 with an atsc/clear qam tuner to avoid a converter box. Worked great until my wife wanted to watch one show while taping another. Bought the Zenith 901 box but, now have to be the nightly contortionist to switch cables back and forth all night long. Boring!! The signal strength of HD channels through the box of all eight channels off rabbit ears was appox 80-95%.
Last weekend I opt for a new Samsung high end consumer issue from the worlds largest chain of imported made for Wally junk and brought it home. No air channels available the set tells me. I hook my DVR to it and while it states to be plug and play, it can not find nor configure the device via HDMI? I see this anomoly as Windows 95 revisited in 2010. This store chain now has more than a grand of my money and I have no picture from any source. Defective product comes to mind so I/We trek it back and buy down a notch in the Samsung line. The same dismal cycle repeats once again and I'm/We're nearly two grand out of pocket. Returned the offender within hours! Now only 50 bucks worth of fuel expended on a lost cause. Samsung tech tells me that if the channel wasn't found over "AIR", it isn't available? I buy a DB2, stick it on the same mast that Hughes was on and suddenly, I have double the available HD channels at a rock solid 95%?
I speak with a questionable television dealer who explains to me that the Samsung made for Wally is so much degraded garbage and even if I buy their model which is an upgrade to the same model already purchased, the receptors which capture OTA signals are very poor in new televisions and that they (the dealer) won't warranty any set they sell which isn't connected to either the cable I can't get, Dish Network I hate from experience and DirectTV which is AT&T; the same nice people who can't run me a DSL connection or even keep the existing land line operational when someone throws a glass of water out the window. Something inside of my head is screaming that this is all wrong which is why I am on this forum..to learn. So, I've spent a week reading and watching and it's time to put my foot in before holographic television becomes the standard.
All the foregoing being stated, I'm not even certain whether I am in the right forum but I need feedback on where this debacle went wrong; how to correct it and what to buy which has a good atsc/clear qam tuner. Money isn't the issue. Getting what I paid for is.
Thanks for any reply,
