My Heart (from the Sleeps With Angels album)--if you can get a hold of the video he did for this song called The Complex Sessions I believe, directed by Jonathan Demme, its a study in honest intensity, just Neil and a piano, and the voice that sounds the same in 1995 as it did in 1969. This song will surprise you.

He's actually got tons of great, beautiful, pretty, lovely or "nice" songs. Those songs are probably his best. For as detached, distant or aloof as he can appear at times in interviews, he's a pretty downright emotionally deep guy. I've always truly believed that Neil Young will go down in history as one of the greatest songwriters of our generation. He's easily up there with guys like Dylan , Lennon, etc. Maybe even better in terms of longevity.

I wholeheartedly agree. When you start looking at the songs he's written from the Buffalo Springfield days to the present, its mind boggling. And it seems like I rarely go to a concert these days without someone covering a Neil Young song--just in the last year or two I've seen the Jayhawks do Expecting to Fly, Cowboy Junkies do Helpless and Powderfinger, the Bottle Rockets do Hey Hey My My and on and on. He is a very emotionally intense guy which makes his concerts so engrossing and involving. That emotionalism has helped him write classics like Ohio in reaction to world events very quickly; I'll never forget an interview I saw with David Crosby recounting Neil bringing that song in to CSN and them playing it just days after Kent State, and Crosby said he was literally weeping as they were singing the "4 dead in Ohio" chorus. Young later ressurrected Ohio in concerts at the time China was cracking down on the students there in the late 80's and would lead into the song by chastising the Chinese government for suppressing freedom just as ours did in the 60's.
Anyway, a great collection of the gentler side of Neil is on that Unplugged CD/video, and he reworks some songs like Like a Hurricane completely by playing it on the pump organ. An amazing artist, great article about him in a recent Rolling Stone. Not many people know he has 2 autistic children and started the Bridge school with his wife to educate people on communicating with autistic children.

Yeah, I read that interview with Crosby, too. I always much preferred C,S,N & Y's style of anti-establishment and anti-war songs over some of the cornier bands, especially from S. California like the Airplane. The musicianship was certainly a hell of a lot better, too. The Airplane weren't really bad, but they were kind of like The Monkees of their genre. It was hard to take them as seriously. I have a hard time taking any of those S. Cal. bands too seriously, except for the rare ones like Santana.

Gotta love a guy who loves Lionel.
