In terms of instrumental/classical a couple come to mind:

Beethoven - "Moonlight Sonata"
Debussy - "Claire De Lune"

I'm having a harder time with modern/pop/rock stuff. While there's a lot of songs that I consider "great", most aren't what I would call "beautiful." I'll hold off (cop out) and see what others suggest along those lines...

Samuel Barber's - Adagio of Strings

Prokofiev's - Prodigal Son/Sym #4 (original composition).........maybe Sym#1 also

Hindemiths' - Mathis Der Maller is a close runner up

.......................................

simple old folk songs like:

St Basil's Hymn
Rubarb

deserve honorable mention

FORGOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to mention.

"in this land" by Celtic/New age band "NightNoise". highly recommend them as a great band.

it rivals Samual Barber's Adagio for Strings.

stuff by Montreux is also nice.

Also, "Battle Hymn of the Republic" I find to be more beautiful than the "Star Spangled Banner", but that's still a beautiful song.

I find America the Beautiful prettier than our Anthem as well.

an aside: the movie soundtrack to "Dark Blue World" is very nice also

For those who think they can still write songs like that - you need to broaden your scope. Very few venues for older music, but do some research. It's really rewarding.

Vera Lynn, Helen Kain, Terisa Brewer, Andrew Sisters, sara Vaughn all great stuff!!

all right here!!

alt.binaries.sounds.1940s.mp3....................and......he re...
alt.binaries.sounds.78rpm-era.mp3

..............get a decent ISP or news service first though: SBCglobal or UsenetRocket respectively.

otherwise you are wasting your time in regard to my suggestions.

Agree about Nightnoise.

In fact, a LOT of traditional and modern Celtic, Celtic-influenced and Windham Hill stuff could make this list.

John Barry's love themes for Somewhere In Time and Out Of Africa were quite beautiful.

I have been listening to a combination of three cuts from the soundtrack of John William's "Memoirs Of A Geisha" that I put together out of sequense. The first is Sayuri's Theme featuring Itzhac Perlman on violin followed by an incredible cello solo with Yo-Yo Ma, A Dream Discarded, and ending with Confluence that has elements of each. The sequence runs ~ 6:30 mins.

The beautiful film was greatly enhanced by the soundtrack, IMHO.

Yngwie Malmsteen has some very beautifull music, especialy his rendition of Greensleeves. plus some of Rushes music can be very nice lyricly.

Pachelbel's "Canon in D"
Etta James: "At Last"
Marty Robbins: "El Paso"
Don McLean: "Vincent"

Barber's "Adagio for Strings (Op. 11)" is probably the most arresting piece of music ever put to paper. Ditto Beethoven's "Symphony 7 (Allegretto)"...I get chills every time I hear the buildup.

That said, neither really qualifies as a "song," do they? A song--with lyrics--would effectively rule out most classical, jazz, etc. Pity.

So if we're talking in the realm of lyrics-based stuff, it's pretty hard to overlook Elliott Smith and these two songs: "Between the Bars " and " Tomorrow Tomorrow"...the first knocks the wind out of your sail, the second returns it. Good stuff.

Certainly one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I've been listening to the Dropkick Murphys lately and their rendition of The Green Fields of France is quite stirring as well, if you're into that sort of thing.

I don't know if anyone else has said this but as far as national anthems go, I think Russia's takes the cake.....with the choir singing it, it just sounds so powerful and beautiful.

I won't go on record as saying anything is the most beautiful song ever but I would nominate Ripples from the Genesis album A Trick Of The Tail.
This might not fall into the all genres category top picks, but for the most beautiful Rock song, then Edie (Ciao Baby) by The Cult ranks right up there on my list......awesome song.

The King- ElvisPresley- You were always on my mind.

Big Balls by AC/DC always brings tears to my eyes. Pure poetry:

Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure,
They're the balls that I like best.
And my balls are always bouncing,
To the left and to the right.
It's my belief that my big balls should be held every night.
