However in terms of extraordinary new talent I would list Handel's "Laschia Ch'io Pianga" as sung by Hayley Westenra (originating from New Zealand and recently performing with Celtic Women at Slane Castle in PBS special in 2006) - one of the purest young soprano voices in the world currently.

OK, I did go too far. It just kills me, when people "only" seem to rave about singers from the west. Then again, I also understand it's hard to find out about these artists from regular radio and tv.

this is an awesome thread and i did notice that the little drummer boy was mentioned with no artist. needless to say there can be only one. That one would have to be Bing Crosby.

The band Low made a very cool version of it too, but it's nothing like Bing's version.

Low sounds like simon & garfunkel mixed with peter paul & mary. not bad.

Another one of interest that is different would be the duet with David Bowie.

Don't know if it's been mentioned but Pachebel's Canon in D Minor is one of the most moving songs i've ever heard. It's second only to Amazing Grace (Leann Rimes' version is by far my favorite)

I'd bet that if you asked most people which one they actually thought was worse (and actually made them sit through both - although you'd probably have to tie them down to do it), you'd get a worse reaction to YLUML .

Maybe we should take a poll here .
