Awesome singing that will make Enya sound like William Hung.

C'mon, now - I don't know if I'd go THAT far....

But I totally agree with you about the "World Music" scene. That's where all the best stuff is.

Here's a good choice from that genre - "Ever So Lonely", by Sheila Chandra.

Probably too many to list

However in terms of extraordinary new talent I would list Handel's "Laschia Ch'io Pianga" as sung by Hayley Westenra (originating from New Zealand and recently performing with Celtic Women at Slane Castle in PBS special in 2006) - one of the purest young soprano voices in the world currently.

OK, I did go too far. It just kills me, when people "only" seem to rave about singers from the west. Then again, I also understand it's hard to find out about these artists from regular radio and tv.

For the curious, try:

Also, since it's AVS, I'll also add the amazing Johnny Cash version of NIN's Hurt to the list of music videos, you have to see. I think it's the best music video I have ever seen or at least top 5.

Check it out here

Flan

Flan,

It's a beautiful song, but I think Mr. Lovett's record company may have an issue with the link you posted.

lets lay a little country down with:

I miss my friend - Darryl Worley
She believes in me - Kenny Rogers
Unanswered prayers - Garth Brooks
He walked on water - Randy Travis
Dont take the girl - Tim McGraw
I'll fly away - Alison Krauss
Hello darlin - Conway Twitty

this is an awesome thread and i did notice that the little drummer boy was mentioned with no artist. needless to say there can be only one. That one would have to be Bing Crosby.

The band Low made a very cool version of it too, but it's nothing like Bing's version.

Low sounds like simon & garfunkel mixed with peter paul & mary. not bad.

Another one of interest that is different would be the duet with David Bowie.

here is a real pretty song that may have been forgotten by people.

God I hate that song. Hate hate hate hate. Hate. I hate it more than "Feelings". I hate it more than anything by Leonard Cohen. I hate it more than falling through the hole in a Port-a-potty. I'm going to have to go out and run over a puppy in a car just to give vent to the feelings that song produces in my mind. And then shoot heroin to forget. Thanks. Thanks a freaking lot for bringing that up.

Don't know if it's been mentioned but Pachebel's Canon in D Minor is one of the most moving songs i've ever heard. It's second only to Amazing Grace (Leann Rimes' version is by far my favorite)

Absolutely!!! When I first heard about this a few years ago, I figured it was some kind of joke. Then I heard the song... Then I watched the video... Now, I have it burned to several CDs so I can listen to it at any time! Great choice

You couldn't POSSIBLY hate it more than "You Light Up My Life", now could you?

Oh yeah. YLUML sucks but "Seasons" is like spending eternity in a prison cell with a mime.

Wow. It must be something personal then.

I'd bet that if you asked most people which one they actually thought was worse (and actually made them sit through both - although you'd probably have to tie them down to do it), you'd get a worse reaction to YLUML .

Maybe we should take a poll here .

Just curious - which one do you think is worse - "YLUML", or "Mac Arthur Park"?

that would be a great idea.

I just read this entire thread and I would have to add:

Donny Hathaway "Giving Up"
Donny Hathaway "A Song for You"
Josh Groban "To Where You Are"
Josh Groban "You Raise Me Up"
Tuck and Patti "Take My Breath Away"

I really found it hard to believe that none of Donny or Josh's music had been listed. Shame on all you Audiophiles!
