Who are the NEC Owners on here - Page 2

On my fourth & possibly fifth NEC XG's...the one on my ceiling is a 1352 with excellent tubes.
May be getting a pristine 110LC in a week or two.

Lumagen HDP Visionpro
Denon 3910 with SDI mod by Lumagen
Directv H-10...Hope to go with Dish network as soon as they get NFL package.

A PG 9+ and an XG 110LC. The 9 has good tubes and the 110 has toasted tubes. If only it was the other way around.

9PG with around 8500 hours in the chassis and about 70 hours on a new set of tubes.

I fitted the tubes with the projector still on the ceiling!!

Currently using a Runco PFP7 set to 720p on a 4:3 100" screen. My main input device is a modded Xbox for divx & mpegs. I use a pioneer DVD player for DVD's.

I'm also building a HTPC with DVB-S & DVB-T cards in it. If I can make it user friendly enough I will replace the scaler with it.

I've got some work in Singapore coming up so I will have to make a purchase while I'm there

can't wait to setup my projector and enjoy

6PG-Xtra with around 850 hours on the tubes and chassi. I am however struggling with the white balance procedure, hopefully I'll be able to watch a movie or two in a not too distant future.

I own an XG135LC (XG1352 Model), trying to repair it right now. Hope to find a solution, as I am away from home and I don't expect to return before the end of January or middle of February

Just a side note . . .if someone is in Western NY or Western PA that could use help on setting up their PG unit I could probably help get it 80% of the way. You can feel free to contact me. This would be a pay with kindness deal or pay it forward (would this count for that ). . .I am also willing to sell one of my 9pgs to a good home and help setup.

In chronological order:

1) PG-6000 - mint (my first PJ in August 2004)
2) PG-6200 - currently on the ceiling after tube swap
3) XG-750 - donor green for the above. U/S LVPSU now fixed.
4) PG-9000 - light green wear
5) PG-6000 - no visible wear
6) PG-6000 - very slight green wear
7) PG-6000 - no visible wear
8) PG-6200 - backup and spares machine

I really ought to thin this list out, but having four identical low hour near mint PG6s tempts me to save them for a proper quad blended stack just for the heck of it.

IF anyone ever perfects the edge blending technique.

What is the perceivable performance jump from a 9pg to 6/9PG+ and a 9pg to a 6/9PG extra and then to a 10PG? Looking to see where I might go from here with the next real jump in price/performance.
9 PGXtra, Lexicon RT-20, Lumagen HDP.
I've got a XG110 AC sitting in the basement waiting for its screen .
extremely low hour 10PG (less than 1500 hours), TAW Rock Pro scaler, Panny sdi modded dvd player. HD via Comcast, Sony OTA stb, and JVC DVHS. Projecting onto a 9 foot wide Dalite screen at 960p. Audio is via a Lexicom MC12.

Tinman,
How is the SilverStar screen with a crt projector?

Just the basics:

PG6/9 800lumens, base model. Great image, but hardest to set up to GET that image. Can look exactly like a PGplus, but you have to work for it.

PG6/9Plus 800lumens AND Electronic Astig and extra convergence capability. Same image but much easier to get there due to the extra features. A little sharper due to edge/corner astig function.

PG6/9 Xtra 1000 lumens, different CRT's, same basic functions, maybe sharper than a plus, Close to an XG. Highest scan rates and video bandwidth. Same basic setup as a plus.

PG10 same basic chassis as a PG6/9 except with 9" LC tubes. I'll take one in less than a heartbeat. No edge/corner astig/focus. But who cares!!! Properly set up, it makes no real difference. Probably the most underrated 9" out there.

So in practical, real world application (as opposed to specs on paper) would I really need to jump to a 10pg to see an appreciable performance increase? Marc, as I see it from what you wrote, I can get to the same picture as a plus so it is a choice between a xtra and a 10 pg. Is there an easy way to categorize the practical performance increases?

The best 8" IMO with the best color palete bar none
All the work it took to get it dialed in... It's never going to move out until it melts or something.

Hi,

I am new to the big screen HT game ... I have been running a 29" direct view CRT for years with my 5.1 system ...

I JUST picked up a rather nice PG-6 off a friend of mine who was suffering from a negative WAF ... I have no WAF to worry about so the dining room is being converted

So now comes the fun .... getting it up and tweaked. I had my other purchase (a Barco Data 500) up and running in about 1/2 hour (roughed in with an OK image for SD) but then I have been working with Barco's for 16 years

The learning curve on the NEC is going to be higher i suspect ... plus I am a bit of a perfectionist ... Tomorrow I start the initial Mechanical setup ... Thanks Curt P for you Web-page setup guides !!!!

I plan to grab a damaged Draper/Screenworks FP matt surface and cut it down and make a screen.

I will probably be running a HTPC and / or a upconverting DVD player as a sources. However If I can grab a Faroudja LD-100 from work cheap enough that may be the initial source till everything else is tweaked.

Cheers

I just bought a used (but rather good condition) NEC PG6200 (PG6-xtra). I'm taking the lenses off tonight to check out the condition of the tubes, but for $200 I couldn't pass up the unit.

It's my first CRT (first projector actually). Should be a fun learning experience I'm sure...

I'm in the process of building my theater room (converting portion of basement). I'm planning on a 10' wide 2:35:1 screen (constant height setup).

Now to convince my wife that we need a Lumagen HDP...
Well, that settles it then. The NEC is so good, that even God uses one.

Uh.... welcome to the forum??

Although it can be done, CRTs are definately not the best choice for a constant height set up. There are no anamorphic lenses.

Using a 10' wide 2.35:1 constant height set up is going to:
1) Give you a picture that is too dim and lacks punch.
2) Has less resolution on 1.85:1 and 1.78:1 content than you would with a 16:9 screen.
3) Wears your tubes out faster.

Thanks... I'm sure I'll be bugging you all in a short while about the setup of this beast.

Dave (or anyone for that matter)... what setup would you suggest for the screen then? The system will be primarily used for DVD viewing... maybe a little HDTV in the future, but mostly DVDs. I realize there is no anamorphic lens, but I figured that once the scaler is in place, constant height shouldn't be an issue as the output of the scaler is fixed to a specific resolution and the CRT will be set up and fixed to that resolution/size? I'm very new to all of this, but I thought that's why a scaler comes into play?

Bottom line is that I'm shooting for the total theater experience (not just a room with a big screen) so I want to aviod letterboxing as much as possible if not completely...

Hi new owner of XG110LC.
I have just added a nice 135LC with good tubes, so that makes three. Of course, I am still using the PG.
