When you said failure can you describe how they failed? Skipped, froze, wouldn't finalize? And on the inner hub of the discs is there a GG or GD imprinted on them?

I meant to add that I had a Panasonic DMR-EH50. Don't have a PC burner (yet), so can't scan for errors.

I found the MIJ Maxells at Sears. Someone here had posted that as a good source to still find them, since their turnover of stock is not as high as more popular stores.

The failures occurred during dubbing, when the disk would freeze. I had to hold down the power button to shut the machine off and reset. I visually inspected the bad disks, but couldn't see any obvious flaws.

I just got a 50pk of the Maxell -R 8x from Staples. The ones left at my store were all Made In Taiwan. I am 1 out of 1 successful burns so far. I don't have a PC drive so I don't know what the media code is.

We do not have a Staples around but when Office Depot did this same deal the media code was MXL RG03 for the ones I picked up.

I have heard that some DVD-ROMs can read the media code with some of the freebie tools out there but have not tried it. I would not trust a DVD-ROM for any scanning but might work for some ID work.

Can you imagine the thousands of people that threw out their old ink cartridges that are now kicking themselves? I'm one of them. Good thing I had the 5 that I did for the 50-pack for $2 Playos! Still no failures!

I am still 100% on the Playaz DVDs. I am about halfway through the 1st 50pk. I wonder how many of these will play properly 12 months from now :-)

I also noticed that they are back at Staples, but at the list price of $25 or $30. Which means another sale might be coming, perhaps at another holiday weekend?

I seem to remember from the ad that you can tell that it's a 15 pack. I think you can read a '15' near the upper right of the picture. (Plus the height of the pack seemed pretty clearly it was 15 pack.)

I don't remember what speed these are though. Guess I should swing by before Sat.

I just stopped at OD based upon this report.
They are Maxell 15-pack, DVD-RW 2x @ $25.
Buy 1, get 2 more free, 45 disks @ $25 - h&ll of a deal if they work!
I got last three cake boxes in my store (San Ramon, CA).

55c per is not a bad price for Maxell DVD-RW sold in 15-pks. You can knock the price down a bit more if you ask for a price match at other stores - if they carry them. And perhaps combine it with an ink discount.

If you know where to get them for 30c or less, please let me know !!! :-)

The lowest price I ever paid for DVD-RW in a 25pk spindle was 31c per and for that I used a $3 ink discount, and a 110% price match on MSRP! (Thanks to Bill1313). The rest of them were between 40c - 52c per (without ink discount or price match). Since -RW sales are not common, and store selection may vary (making it harder to price match), anything around 50c is good enough for me - until I built up an inventory of reserves :-)

I wish I could get DVD-RAM at 50c. Speakign of which I thought of using the 50% ODP coupon on the ODP-branded double-sided DVD-RAMs but they are discountinued in the stores in my area according to their website. If they are available in other areas (by zipcode), you can get a reasonably good deal on them. (ODP = Office DepoT)

Office Depot's ad-flyer shows a $5 rebate for an ink or toner cartridge turned in, 1 per customer per day. I didn't know about it when I went in for the DVD-RW special, or it would have been $20 for my 45 disks.

FWIW, I picked up a pack of these today for a new drive I have on order. The media code is CMC MAG M01 and actually have a 16x write strategy.

I see where TDK is getting out of recordable DVD disc manufacturing - prices too low. They are focusing on HD/BD discs. Bummer. I need to load up on TDK blanks while they are still available.

They will continue to sell discs so hopefully they pick a good supplier and stick with them.

The actual sale is $10.50 for 50pk, thus 21c per DVD. The ad shows +R and has a GQ logo. Is GQ a brand? Then I guess they are not brandless :-)

I haven't tried those yet, although after my experience with the Playaz brand, I may get more brave in trying those brandless brands. I finished up a 50pk of Playaz -R (Playo from Staples) with no problems which was a total surprise.

Probably the same people that buy Blem-Or-Sux at any price.

The Playos have kicked ass for me. Glad I bought 250 of 'em. Now I don't mind recording Corwin's Quest daily on Discovery HD and only putting one hour on discs that I give to my gf's family so much. (4 cents vs. 30 cents is a big deal when it's 30+ discs per month) Sooner or later, I'll hopefully talk them all into getting HDTVs, DVRs, and such for themselves!

I don't remember seeing this particular ad, but they're in the daily Fry's ads.. They're only in the particular area where the ad appears though. Different Fry's areas may have different ads.

and as I said earlier in this thread, at least with my data point of one disc, these are OPTODISCs.

Or if anyone has bought the TDK DVD-Rs when they were on sale at Circuit City within the last 3 months.
